  1. Sick of rifle already. Where I hunt there are monsters all over the place and the group that hunts the property behind me decides to start shooting does at 7 this morning. They end up wounding 2. I let them recover them on my property but it messed up the whole morning and now everything is spooked as hell. I could see taking small does first thing in the morning 2 weeks from now but on the second day of the season?
  2. LOL i had a buddy in college that majored in Greek Gods. Can you believe that he is unemployed? - Go figure!
  3. Congrats! Great story and a beauty of a buck.
  4. Can totally relate here. Some of my fondest memories are celebrating a buck kill in the woods with my grandpa, dad, and brother. Now it is just my dad and brother. There is no more exciting feeling to me when I hear my Dad or my brother shoot during rifle season. When I hear them whistle the all clear signal its like kids on Christmas to run and see what they got. We continue the tradition that my grandpa passed onto us - we all take a swig of blackberry brandy following a successful buck kill. Good luck to everyone.
  5. Reminds me of my grandpa. He and my dad would take me hunting from the time that I was able to walk. My grandpa would be out at 5am every weekend of deer season well into his 70s. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers about 10 yrs ago, so he could not carry a gun any more. My dad and I would still bring him with us and he would sit in the ground blind with us. My grandpa passed away about 6 year ago. I now use his old 30-06 for deer hunting as a tribute.
  6. hey that's one of the deer that I donated!
  7. Anybody ever participate in the venison donation program in NY? I have participated the past few years. In my opinion it is a great program. All you have to do is find a local deer processor/butcher that is approved by the program (you can find these butchers on the website), and then drop off your tagged field dressed dear. Its completely free and very easy. I hunt in 3M and the group of 4 that I hunt with has a total of 12 dmps. We usually keep 2 or 3 deer for ourselves, but it gets to the point where you have all the venison you need, and don't want to shoot any more because you know you won't eat them. Also, on the days where you don't feel like going through the process of butchering a deer, you can still shoot one and simply drop it off. In my opinion, its a win-win for everyone 1) I get to fill all my tags 2) The butchers/processors get paid by the state for each donated deer they process. 3) Some folks in the state that are having a tough time with bills get some high-quality organic meat. Late in the season when we are putting on drives, we call them "feed the children" days.
  8. You can't kill those Honda 4 wheelers. I only buy stuff with Honda engines now. They beat the hell out of Briggs and stratton
  9. I say get your butts out to work and earn the things you have. A bunch of socialists that want everything handed to them.
  10. I have dragged a rag soaked in golden estrus to my stand then hung a scent wick in a nearby tree. On 2 separate occasions I had deer follow 5 minutes later. Both times it was too dark to see or shoot but I assume they were bucks as I could hear both sniffing. My brother shot a nice 7 pt last year using golden estrus. In my opinion golden estrus can't hurt.
  11. i use my grandpa's remington 30-06. I also use my Marlin lever action 30-30 when I am hunting some thicker spots.
  12. Make sure you have plenty of napkins or tp. Using maple leaves is not pleasant.
  13. For me in 3M i would say that it has been an off season so far. Compared to last year, I have seen way less deer. I've seen a lot of yearlings and button bucks. Last year I saw 4 or 5 bucks at this point, and would see large groups of 5-7 large does. Have not seen deer in large groups yet. First horns I saw was yesterday morning at about 8:30 - nice 7 pt at 45 yards, but could not get a shot or get him to come any closer. I think the warm weather and full moon down here has pushed back the peak activity a little. Hopefully the rifle opener on Sat will get things moving some more.
  14. i think the warm weather has delayed things for sure (talking about 3M). Bucks are ready but the does are not. Its supposed to cool down a bit after today, and with the full moon coming late this week this weekend should be interesting. Good luck everyone!
  15. I think they can approximate how long ago the deer was killed by something in the eye. I don't think that it has anything to do with a spot light. For example, if a DEC officer finds someone with a deer at 7am, and they can tell by the eyes that it was killed 6 hours ago, it was obviously killed after legal hunting hours.

    Deer Search

Does deer search operate in the southern part of the state at all?
  17. Sounds like a blast. We got 30 acres and it is surrounded by 100s of acres of woods. My dad blasted a nice coyote opening day of rifle last season. Good luck this year.
  18. Nice buck! Glad you found him. Where in Green county do you hunt? I own some property in East Durham that I hunt.

    hello

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum. I hunt bow, rifle, and mz in the Southern Zone, primarily 3M and 4R. Have only seen a handful of does during bow season so far, but hope to be posting some pictures soon. Joe
