  1. I have mine. I paid 75 dollars for it - new! And it still looks that way too! The 35 Rem has a lot more umphf than the 30 30. And in my opinion is a very under-rated caliber. The 35 was originally designed as an Istaeli Machine gun caliber. I have shot mine on the bunch rest and literally drilled bullets into the same hole at 100 yards consistently.
  2. Being a traditional archer and bowhunter I shoot my bows year round. However, I am also a member of the American Broadhead Collectors Club, so I go to a lot of garage sales and flea markets looking for Vintage Broadheads. I also make my own arrows. When not doing something archery related, I am ususally fly fishing. I also like canoeing and hiking. I am also a Hunter Education instructor and secretary of the Dutchess County Federation of Fish & Game Clubs.
  3. Thanks, guys.. I have all the WMU information. Guess I'll break out a state map and start plotting away and figure it out.
  4. Tivoli Bays has some rabbits. But you need a dog or a partner to push them out of the henge rows.
  5. Article in this week's NYON. Th DEC just acquired that 261 acres across the road and expanded the WMA. .
  6. I agree with you there, SteveB. Afterall, everything is somebody's dinner!
  7. I'm with you Skillet. The day I stop feeling compassion is the day I should no longer be allowed to go hunting.
  8. Well.. many years ago when I first started hunting and shot a deer. I felt sorrow initially, but gladness afterwards for having killed a deer. My father, who spent three years in the South Pacific never picked up a gun after WWII (but knew enough to teach me to shoot correctly, was his only exception). I explained to him how I felt after shooting the deer. And he told me, that is a good thing, it just means that you have compassion. Nature is cruel, what you don't see on Walt Disney or the Nature channel is that prey animals such as deer and elk that are taken down by predators, are being eaten while they are still alive. OUR SITUATION IS - Man has a Conscience and we recognize our responsibility - and that is a very good thing. Here is a little prayer I keep in my pack - A Hunter’s Prayer 0 Lord, I am a hunter And life I seek to take But let me not attempt the shot Beyond my skill to make For Lord they are your creatures Given for our use But each one falls within your sight They're not for our abuse And when I loose my arrow Please guide it swift and true Or let it miss completely, Lord That pain be not undue A clean kill or no kill, Lord Such is my heart's desire Give me the skill to make it so Or let me hold my fire And when my time upon this earth The days they are fulfilled Grant that I may die at least As clean as those I killed
  9. If you mean in Partridge Run WMA in Berne. Yes, they do. Thick stuff - great exercise! There are Grouse there, bt it takes some effort that's for sure.

    What WMU's ?

Hi, all. I am trying to figure out what WMU Blenheim Hill State Forest and Burnt-Rossman are in? Does anyone know?
  11. The fish of a thousand casts. I prefer fishing the Salmon River for Steelhead rather than dealing with the crowds. January is a pretty good month I am told. I have not fished there in winter per se. Mainly because of weather and snow. Fly fishing: Estaz patterns, Comets, Wool buggers work well. I have also had good luck with Mickey Finn's, when nothing else was working.
  12. WNYB.. more than just your opinion. You know your forestry management princples. I think one day, like out west, all that old growth is going to go up like toast! What a waste of timber! Old growth is the best stuff too!
  13. I live in Staatsburg, Dutchess County. I use to find Grouse out Tivoli Bays 15-20 years ago. I use to train my Setters there. Was good then. Haven't seen a Grouse in about 15 years here either. Although, they tell me there are good numbers in the Stissing Mountain area of Hicks Hill Rd. It is a shame, and it is development. 20 years ago, my gun club.. you coud literally hunt from Rt 9 to the Taconic and never worry about houses or posted land. That has all changed. In the 1940's Dutchess County was famous for it's upland game, even books and magazine stories were written about it. Like in other posts - Dutchess Deer have been in steady decline as well.
  14. Take out the Shotgun & go Grouse hunting combined with scouting for next season. Make new arrows and go ice fishing (if it ever gets cold enough!).
  15. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to Everyone!
  16. CCHC... I totally agree with you. The failure of the Adirondacks is the "Non-Management" of the whole area. "Forever Wild" really translates into "Forever Devoid of Wildlife". This is Forestry and Wildlife Management 101, and by state law the entire region goes unmanaged. Interesting thought, "Adirondac" is derived from Algonquin Indian translation meaning "bark eaters". The Native Americans never wintered in the interiior of the Dacks because the winters were so severe. Sure they hunted and fished it around the seasons but never in winter.
  17. The good news is that Chris Amato who was responsible for the Adirondack UMP Plan has resigned. The whole deal with the purchase of the Moose River Plain Area was that it was to be forever managed for sportsman use. So now, they have locked out a large percentage of the population, whether it be disability or sheer physical capability to access the wilderness areas. Once again, the sportsman community got snookered on this one. Let's all make sure we let our representatives know that we don't what to see further DEC acquisitions go down the some UMP path, whereby only accessible to the few.
  18. Bix-R-OWhatever.... you crack me up! Please enlighten the entire New York State hunting community and share your vast knowledge and advanced unknown to most skills with the rest of us. Oh mighty Hunter. First of all you are right, I only hunted several days in Fahnestock State Park, where the area is vast, deer could be anywhere, and restricted to BOW ONLY. I only hunted there after the the regular bow season ended and in December as to keep away from the gun hunting area. My other bow hunting area closed on November 30th. I am more than familar with the lay of the land in Fahnestock and have had successes there in the past. I have 42 years deer hunting experience, 25 of those years as an instructor. Both Gun & Archery. But I'm just a one legged man in an ass-kickin contest, I wish I had your superior skills. Gimme a break! If I sound blunt. Too Bad, I was not expecting a critique about me!
  19. Yes, okay. I'm eating tag soup. But not sour grapes. I hunted WMU's 3F, 3N and 4Y this past season. Regarding deer sightings by Grade: 4Y- gets a C- average 2 deer per day or 1 for every 5 hours in stand 3N - gets an F - 50 hours time spent 2 deer spotted 3F - gets an F - 40 hours time spent 0 (zero) deer seen It does not take a genius to see that in many parts of the state the deer herd numbers have been on a serious decline over the past 10 years or so. The DEC needs to start listening to it's PAYING customers (the sportsman), instead of the insurance companies. The DEC is quoted as saying 2011 started out slow but then picked up, and is "on par" with 2010 harvest numbers. So that's supposed to be a good report???!!! They were both horrible years!!! Would love to see a one buck rule and better administration and management of DMP's. I'm just sayin'..
  20. If the Muzzleloader Season went back to what was originally intended... "Primitive" Muzzleloader I would say yes an extension would be a good idea. The way it is now with high tech front stuffers - NO!
  21. Depends on where I am. If I am in a bow only area than No. If not, I wear a blaze orange hat.
