That is sad. State Law must wear a life vest after Nov 1. When I was young I swam competitively and and did the lifeguard thing. Don't care how good a swimmer you are. If the water is cold, you're screwed. I feel for the person and their family, especially at this time of year. God Bless.

Duck hunter shot by his "Dog" . . . Did I read that right?
SteveMcD replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
that's sad. -
The average hunter never goes more than a couple hundred yards from their car. Get a good topo map, find the funnels and escape routes and you can do well. After the first week of the season and weekdays you pretty much have full run of the place anyway.

I'll be out dark to dark both Thursday and Friday. Still have my tags.

For me it's been a poor season, seen a number of does, but no shot opportunities and only one buck that I've seen.Weather has been too warm, little mast crop, rut seems to be a split rut this year.

Congratulations!! Nice Deer!

Congrats!!!Nice Buck!

Usually Aqua Velva or Old Spice works for me. I do not have any faith in commercial scents, I prefer to hunt the wind and know my hunting area and deer habits through scouting and past experiences. Seriously, I had tried commercial scents in the past, particularly when I was younger, sometimes they work simply out of curiosity. But I think they scare more deer away than they draw in. If I were to use scents, I would consult a trapper or someone with experience in making them over commercially bought stuff. Commercial scents do, do one thing, they attract a lot of hunters and their hard earned money!

What a shame! Nice Buck!

Saturday was a day in the woods for me. Saw plenty of squirrels that was it. I think the Full Moon and the high winds on Saturday kept the deer bedded and not moving around all day. But, it's early season yet........ Good Luck to All! Be Safe!

I have been hunting with a Longbow since 1970 and have been hunting Longbow Only through all the seasons for about 10 years now. It is definitely more challenging. But that is very much a part of it. I have killed enough to know, I do not have to kill. I hunt for the sake of the hunt and understand that success isn't always a blood trail. Don't get me wrong, I want meat in the freezer just like I have always done. Traditional Archery means shooting and practicing year round, with experience and proficiency there is no handicap hunting with a traditional bow. biggamefish... Nice deer! Congrats! Nice Bow too!

STS... I totally agree with you. The sad part is is that the younger folks idolize these characters. Hunting shows today are a far cry from the American Sportsman Days. Today's shows are about the "Hunting Industry" and NOT about Hunting. They add enough fuel to the fire to turn many a non-hunter into an Anti-Hunter. We don't need more hunters for the future of hunting. We need BETTER hunters.

I am headed up on the 10/21 with my Son for some fishing on the South Sandy. I also prefer Steelhead over Salmon.

I haven't read through all the posts. But, I am in Region 3 and QDMA is very active down here. I think Antler Restrictions and such are great, and certainly leads toward a healthier deer herd. The only downfall with QDMA as we can see in other states, as well, is that farmers are now locking out their lands for those who can afford to lease them, and if QDMA is being practiced the leases are expensive. That's great if you can afford it.The problem is it locks out the average working man and his family from areas that were once open to anyone for hunting. I am afraid that with QDMA we will become more and more like Europe where only the rich can afford to hunt. The public areas will get even more crowded than the already are, and the average guy will get disgusted and drop out.

Can't put them in the freezer sittin at home! Unless the wind is a constant 40 MPH.. I'll be out there! Good Luck Everyone.

I have to agree with all that was said. I am 55 and have two grown son's. My oldest 31, hunts when he has time.. young family and work have there priorities. My younger son is 28, he never hunted but enjoys fishing and still does. I have been teaching hunter ed for 20 years now and have seen more and more women actively participating in classes and getting their hunting licenses. I believe they my be our salvation. My classes are filled every fall, so I see plenty of interest in hunting. However, when I see groups like New York Bowhunters and the New York State Conservation Council "OPPOSED" to a Youth Hunt in the recent 5 Year Deer management plan - I have to say - WTF!!! Maybe if there wasn't so much selfishness and division among specialized sporting groups, with the "not in my season" or turf mentality - the future outlook on sporting activities good be a lot better.

Not seeing a heck of a lot of acorns this year. Although, that may not be a bad thing. Last year they were every where - meaning the deer could be anywhere. Is everyone else noticing the lack of mast this year?

Cool.. I have the same gun - T/C Hawken Flintlock .50 caliber.

Do you shoot 100 grain or 125 grain broadheads and why?
SteveMcD replied to burmjohn's topic in Bow Hunting
I shoot a 145 gr Broadhead. As a Longbow hunter with only 175 FPS (which is average for traditional bows), I rely on kinetic energy and momentum of weight for penetration rather than speed like the modern compound bows. My total arrow came in at about a little over 600 grains. And yes, I get complete passthru's on whitetails. l -
Much of the really good scent killers (Ti4 is what I use - recommended by a dog kennel operator), are antimicrobial, so not only do they eliminate scent but kill the bacteria as well. I have had four bears walk within 10 yards of me with this stuff, and they never noticed me.
