  1. It just seems to me that this is some form of "Weird Science"! Hurst's quote seems too simplistic. Perhaps he could have have cited some scientific data that supports his statement.
  2. Not yet. I would not be surprised that in the future we will have to send the DEC a self addressed stamped envelope and a check to cover handling!
  3. I feel your pain! I tend to let the knob heads and spikes walk too. In any event I have been lucky enough to fill my tags for the past several years, usually with a doe or two or a decent sized racked buck. Good Luck!
  4. Does anyone know what is the latest and greatest style of camo for the serious gunhunter is this year! Does it include a warning label, is it made of kevlar?
  5. No explaining it, people do not realize the consequences until it is too late. As far as wearing orange, there is a separate thread for that.
  6. I most certainly agree, after all it is "deer hunting season"!
  7. Doc, the money has already been spent!
  8. Let Sits have his say, his comments make for lively rebuttal. Like everyone else he is entitled his opinion. This forum will certainly heat up as hunting season draws nearer. Doc, keep those fingers limber and your mind sharp!
  9. Belts can be used in conjunction with a good harness. All I can say is that no fall restraint is fail safe, refer to the manufacturer's directions.
  10. I have hunted there many times with moderate success. The area is not crowded, local sharpies do very well there. As far as bear hunting goes, I could not tell you.
  11. Ha-ha .... I haven't had that happen yet. I don't know whether I would actually get mad or start laughing. Doc What is worse is the guys who yell back and forth to oneanother!
  12. Good points, I think about that scenario each time I am hunting. How about the guy in full camo who is still hunting and just like a deer he materializes from anywhere. It makes my heart skip a beat!
  13. What I would like to see would be a link posted whereby any of us could contact someone from the DEC directly to voice our opinions and concerns instead of using a general mail box. Replies could be posted on a separate forum on this site.
  14. Just saw this post. Why worry about the Yankees, the METS have their own problems to deal with. Check the standings! Proud to be a Yankee fan!
  15. WNY, Careful, the issuance of DMP's is based upon a mathematical formula which takes into account applications for a specific DMU, harvest quotas, previous years success and goodness knows what else. I am of the opinion of purchasing and applying for a permit as early as possible despite what THE DEC says. I hunt predominantly in 3N, permits are becoming hard to get. Nevertheless I always have a permit because many of the guys I hunt with are only able to hunt opening day/weekend and willingly transfer the permits to me requesting that I kill a deer (any deer) for them (no chance of that ever happening). I hunt all seasons and I am very particulasr as to what siize/sex of deer I want to kill. Ultimately,I have been able to fill several tags during the ML season
  16. Interesting question regarding deer sightings. I am always amused when turkey hunting (fall and spring) I see many deer but few turkeys. During gun season I see many turkeys!
  17. Excellent point! I was under the impression that the ultimate goal of AR was to balance out the age structure ,improve genetics, increase hunter satisfaction etc. Now this report is published. All I can say is "wow". In PA, many hunters complain more about the scarcity of deer due to the efforts of the PGC to protect habitat by killing perhaps too many does. In any event, the NYSDEC has it right by saying that there is no biologic need for statewide AR. They just want deer killed to meet their requirements.
  18. Not to blow my own horn, but I have been involved in the construction industry for well over thirty years. Presently, I am a project manger and the Company Health and Safety officer responsible for developing and implementing HASP's. PPE will save your life and either prevent or mitigate the chances of incurring serious injury. I am a firm believer in Murphy's Laws. When it comes to hunting from an elevated stand you cannot disregard its inherent danger even if you are safely tied off. These days I choose to do my hunting on the ground.
  19. And to emphasize that point, take a look at the list of various "Stakeholders" that are defined in the blurb on the DEC website about CFTs (Citizen Task Force). Farmers, hunters, foresters, conservationists, motorists, the tourism industry, landowners, small business, etc. You will find more eligible representatives from what I call the "anti-deer forces" than you will those that want to see more (or any for that matter) deer. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7207.html We may think we rule the roost where the DEC is concerned, but our influence has been eroding over the years. As far as the DEC managing "the deer herd to meet the carrying capacity of the land", I'm afraid that in reality, it looks like their primary concerns are the impacts to financial interests around the state, and how best to keep satisfied, and quiet, "stakeholders". Doc Good point, the DEC is so financially strapped that they have no choice but to choose the path of least resistance when it comes to their deer management priorities.
  20. A safety harness is only good if you know how to use it. As with any fall restraint device, not knowing how to use it properly can cause you bodily harm. By the way, once one is dangling what does one do? I can assure you that you will need help to right yourself!
  21. That works for me! How about just create a forum solely devoted to arguments labeled "Enter at Your own Risk"! If you cannot keep it clean and civilized you run the risk of a "moderators time out". As hunting season approaches this site is going to get real busy. A rubber room devoted to emotional arguments may just be what is needed to keep this site interseting. A reincarnation of the "Woodshed" eh? Precisely!!
  22. You are correct OSHA does not approve such devices. OSHA's goal is to protect and ensure the safety of workers by instituting regulations, rules and procedures which employerrs are required to follow to protect their workers. Organizations such as UL,ASTM and ANSI create standards which manufacturers must meet. As far as 2 piece climbers go,like any stand they pose a potential risk.
