However, common sense isn't all that common

I do turnip/beet combintions. I am also surrouned by ag fields. I like it when hey do not feed on them all summer. But after the crops go off the ag fields, late fall and all winter, guess where they are. I am planning to plant them the weekend of july 9th

The law does not say you can dischage a firearm within 500 feet. it says you can with consent. So if I wanted to be that close to someones home and even more if someone was going ot be that close to my home, I would want to know and give permission, or deny it. I could not picture someone being 100 yards from my home hunting or needing to discharge a firearm or bow that close. On the other hand 10 feet is fine if you are not shooting toward the home. But we all know how that goes.

Youre in the NZ bubba, you guys dont have cities or suburban areas up there, so you are probably right. I have been to the sz many times. I guess it has really developed as I do not recall the whole sz as one big city. Lighten up buttercup it was a joke. I know it was a joke and my response was tongue in cheek

according to the guide book you can not discharge a firearm within 500 feet of that building regardless if you are on your own property or not Page 18 last column bottom of page. It is illegal to discharge a firearm or bow within 500 feet of any school, playground or an occupied factory or church. So I am guessing you got that 2.5 acres cheap.

I guess I am the dumb one again, but I can not picture a place I would hunt that would be within 167 yards ( approx 500 feet) much less 150 feet unless I had permission to be there and permission to shoot so close by the owner. Hunting literally in someone's yard does not seem right. Maybe if their house was on one side of the road and I was hunting across the road. I pefer some woods to hunt in.
-
actually if you look in the guide book. You only have to be off the maintained part of the highway, and no part of your arrow or bullet can pass over the road. In other words past the ditch line, and you have to be 500 feet from an occupied dwelling, church or school , unless you have permission. however legal does not mean ethical. Page 18 guide book public highway definition middle column then lower in the same column manner of taking, it is illegal to take game on or from a public highway. Page 18 last column discharge of firearms and bows. The whole 500 feet from a road is a fallacy, which makes it tough to lower it to 150 feet lol.

there is a big difference between attracting game, and keeping game in the area, as well as allowing for a stronger herd. My tract of land is between 2 farms with all the feed needed. Mine has the woods and swamp that the deer stay in and go to the ag fields to feed. They use my feed after the crops are harvested. Big big differene there. If anything, the deer live on my property and travel to adjoining properties to feed. So by planting their crops, they are luring the deer away from my property, and baiting. The majority of my plots are for late fall, and winter. So they are doing the baiting, I am doing the sustaining.

i hear the dec is proposing an oct 1st start to the 2012 season

off topic, but it seems it has strayed anyway. I purchased my tract at the county tax sale. I purchased 250 acres for 3 thousand dollars. I scraped and built a camp. There is an older gentleman next door who owns 200 more acres. He cut a deal if I cut split and stacked 12 cord of wood a year for him, I had exclusive with his place too. Plus he has willed it to me when he passes as he has no family who is interested in it. needless to say he get 12 plus cords a year, and all the venison he wants. I was lucky, but my point is check the tax sales. Lots of times you can get a deal. -

again I preface with I am from the North. For many years I hunted state land, and was very successful. I guess I just dont see the guys can only hunt state land poor them attitudes. I lost a nice peice of private land and a camp in the dacks many years ago due to the govt taking over. It has only been about 6 years I have had my own property and only the past two I have had a camp. I own it, I pay the taxes on it and damn it I will decide who hunts it. I gave up a lot of other pleasures over the years to get it. Call me selfish if you choose to, but I just dont get the I wont hunt if I can only hunt state land thing. There is a lot of very good state land to hunt. I am not a reason that hunter numbers are decreasing just because I own my own piece of property and do not let others hunt it. Laziness and eletist attitudes as well as cost are driving hunter numbers down. Everyone watches hunting shows on tv on all these rpivate ranches and feel they deserve the same. I was thinking of opening it up to a chosen few and charge them to help pay the taxes. But I can afford them, so I will pay them and invite people I choose to. I have allowed youth to hunt my property, and I have taken them as well as parents out. I guess I just dont get all the whining and complaining they are ruining my hunt. -
I have the greatest tool for cleaning under the deck. it is called a nephew. I just pick up the front of the mower. I have a craftsman 18 horse 42 inch cut. I place the front end up on jack stands and get he gets under there and scrapes away.

I hope it passes. Then all you guys will not come North to hunt in my woods. Just Kidding. -
ok so I am wondering. If I plant food plots on my property, how far should I be hunting from them to be ethical? 100 yards 200 yards a mile or maybe not hunt the property at all since I have food plots/bait on there. I pesonally stay away from the food plots and sit the trails leading to them. What is the actual difference between that and sitting on the edge of the plot? In my mind absolutely none. So if there is a natural food source which by that I mean one I did not plant, is it ok to sit on the edge of that? What is the actual difference? I stay away from the plots as I see more deer during legal light staging to go to the plots closer to dark. I also have a sanctuary that no one is allowed in including me. I am not growing plots to enhance larger antlers, but so the deer have food year around and they stay in my area. I hunt big deer too, but to me big is body size. If that makes me unethical, GUILTY.

we have just over 400 acres and there are enough. My hope is to keep them well fed and happy. It was funny last evening while I was seeding, 2 does stood in the hay field watching as if to say when is dinner.
-
I got 12 acres of alfalfa in one field and 3 acres of sugar beets in 2 different plots. Next is mowing the hay and getting it off the fields. With the weather, it has been next to impossible to get on the ground. One more 4 acre plot of biologic and clover and I am done. After that more wood to cut and stack and then time to relax enjoy the camp.

again I quote the reg guide from page 18 unde rmnner of taking "it is illegal to hunt wdlife while in a motor vehicle (except by special permiit)" and refer back to definition of a motor vehicle. I read nothig that says on a bicycle as it is muscle power.
-
well since I am a local court judge, you would win in my court. I agree to err to the side of safety and smart, but it is not illegal.
-
ok but I teach the hunter safety course and it is the dec officers I am quoting when I typed that. Read the regulation in the guide book. It specifically says motorized vehicle. not muscle power. with tow exceptions one is a legall registered handgun in posession of the permit holer and a shotgun when hunting ducks. However in the boat, you can not fire while the boat is in motion. Page 18 of the reg guide first column last paragraph.

I think they prefer to "dump" on forest trails. (Kinda like a "signpost" to mark territory?) I find LOTS of scat piles when I ride my mountain bike on the trails around Saranac Lake. I even came across a large bear on the Meacham Lake trail near the Loon Lake end. JK W/the pic, but I really did see a bear. All that sign got me motivated to try some early season bear hunting last September. I used my mountain bike to get back in the boonies quickly & quietly. Here's a picture from my camp on Mountain Pond. BTW: IF you ever decide to use a bicycle for hunting access, it is considered a "vehicle" & as such, you may NOT have a loaded gun in your posession when riding a bicycle. actually this is not true. The only thing considered a vehicle has to have motor power. Hence the laws stating motor vehicle. In fact and it is a big bone of contention here in my area, an amish buggy pulled by a horse is not considered a motor vehice and they can have loaded guns in the buggy.

I was out for my usual sunday round of golf with my buddies today. In the 11th hole a par 3 145 yard my golfing buddy hit a hole in one. It was awesome to see and help him celebrate it. The ball hit abut 5 feet in front of th green bounced on to the green settled down and rolled in the cup. No big prizes or atta boys, but sure was sweet to see.
