How many deer does your family consume per year?
bubba replied to First-light's topic in Deer Hunting
3 is more than enough. But that also includes one for weekends at camp and I give some away too. Only me here so it goes a long ways Bu tif I only get one or even none, I am still able to crawl out of hibernation in the spring well fed. -
is there really a difference between an 18 foot ladrer and 20 foot climbr? I really do not think the other 2 feet is major. my choice 2 man ladder stands
-
mine sure has. I have a custom barrel for my encore as well as a model 99. But now my goto deer cartridge is the 06. but 25 not 30. I he a remington 742 in 30-06. I was shooting remington coreloct 125 grainers. I shot a doe once, it hit her in the ribs and the velocity spun her round and the bullet exited and came back at me. I was gald I had orange on or I would have shot myself.

the only suggestion I that I didnt like was the one telling others you are not liking the political things on a political forum and asking others not to post them and attack when they say no. Otherwise it is all good.

The funny part is Dave has no clue he has all the power. Simple solution dont click on this forum problem solved. But of course he would go to another forum and attemtp to show his vast intelligence and superior mind set on all topics and tell us what we should and should not post. I always thought that was a moderators job.

you better jump on what is available inconvenient or not. They fill quickly this time of year. If you find another you can always back out. But if you do not find one, you are screwed. That is the time that most say instructors should do more. Just a suggestion from an instructor.

again how dare you post political ideas on a political forum. It is sad that a few on here get a bee under their bonnets and need to attack others. This isnt survivor outwit outlast outplay. Get over your bad selves

that is an olde rmodel 58 caliber with a press in breech plug. They were made until mid 80's I believe. I would shoot about 80 an dno more than 90 grains if pyrodex rs. as far as bullets Hornady makes 58 cal roundballs to shoot with a patch which are I believe around 450 grains and buffalo makes a minnie that is 500 grains, which is about right. . The gun is not capable of handlingmore that 100 grains, but as stated I would stay in the 80 grain range with 90 graisn max. The big kicker with them is the press in breech plug. It is held in with an o ring. The breech keeps it in place while firing. So for no reason never open the acion if you have a isfire until you are sure it will not go off. I am thinking a good 3 to 4 minutes. If you open the action and it goes off, the breech plug will come out of the back of the gun and act like a missile usually at the shooter. They are very safe to shoot if you follow that rule. The other concern is the collapsible ram rod. Get a good range rod an only use the original if reloading when hunting. Always start the bulllet in the barrel as far as it will go with the rod collapsed, then open the rod and seat the bullet. This will makw the rod last a lot longer. They are a 50 to 75 range gun and fun to shoot and make a giant hole. I would have a smith look it over to make sure the oring is in place and the plug is good. Otherwise have a good time.

ok you have a 58 cal huntsman with #11 caps. The twist is a slower twist, so conicals (solid lead bullets) will work well it it. I would suggest pyrodex loose powder and start around. And it is 58 caliber? those are older and have a press in breech plug. A couple pics of the gun would help me tremendously. I am a huntsman fan from way back.

a little more information would be helpful. Brand ignition barrel twist etc.

I never ripped a hunter. I always thought that an idiot with a gun is not a good thing anyway. Why make it worse. I have explained to a few that what they were doing was not safe etc. it did no more good than "ripping" them. I did however at the range once rip a guy and throw him out. I was shooting 100 yard targets with my nephew and there was a guy shooting a handgun. We called all clear and went down to check targets. While we were down range, this idiot opened fire. I waited until he was done walked back up and proceeded to tell him what an idiot he was. He said well there is no way a bullet from where could get to where we were, and he was aware we were down range. I am on the board of trustees for the club, so I kicked him out. He was at the next club meeting complaining. He got his dues back and was told not to return.

If the local judge was his father in law, then he can not hear the case. Granted it is tough to not see someone you know when magistrating in your own township, but that should not matter. But hey the guy has moved on and became someone elses pain in the you know where. Hopefully the next guy he terrorizes does the right thing.

good thing you had orange on.

Well as usual my area 6c requires preference points just to have a chance. It took 3 preference points last year to get one. That means I will be 2 to 3 years before I get another one. I feel real bad for you guys. Good thing we dont have antler restrictions, I would be saving my hundred bucks.

well, I think umm no never mind. ;D

Anyone Tried Winter Peas?
bubba replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
we are planning to. We are just building up enough to be able to. Right now, we each butcher one a year, but in the next 5 years we hope to sell off two or three a year as the herd builds a bit. This is part of why we plant so much at the deer camp. We can cut and bail as we go and it also keeps it fresh for the deer. Kind of double bang for the buck. -

I plant alfalfa, clover and sugar beets. The alfalfa serves a dual purpose. The deer love it and I cut the field and bale of for the beef cattle a buddy and I raise on his farm. Low key 8 cattle and growing. They love the alfalfa all winter and I love putting one in the freezer every year. The sugar beets seem to work well after the ag fields are harvested. And they do dig them up during the winter. I was thinking some soybeans next year in a small plot to see how they do. -
I used to hunt a farm that planted fields of soybeans. Th edeer hammered them. I am thinking plannting some next year. Anybody have any experience using it as a food plot?
-
the sugar beets, and it is 15 acres the 3 of sugr beets are broken up. Plus I will cut and bail the alfalfa before fall

here in 6a and 6 c you get a dmp maybe every 3 to 4 years as you build up prefernce points. So bucks only is pretty much the deal anyway. I do get an antlerless tag for archery and ml at least until now.
