Lol- a few years ago I took out a friends son for the youth turkey season. He talked a big game about what a "crack-shot" he was with daddys big 12ga. but he could back it up on paper. When we got to the field, we used a plowed up gravel pit for cover as we made our way across. On the other side stood 4 gobblers who were just as surprised to see us as we were to see them standing about 20yds away. The young gun I was with was so excited his jaw dropped wide open and he raised his hand and pointed his finger at them as they were formulating an escape plan! No shots fired... I still make fun of him whenever I see him and check to make sure his pointer finger pistol ain't loaded before he goes waving it around at anybody, lol

I don't smoke the ciggs anymore either, but when I did I would snuff out my butts on the rail of my climber stand and stuff the ciggy butt into one of the cable adjustment holes since I had a thing about throwing them on the ground. By the end of season my climber tubes was so packed with old butts I had to fish them out with a coat hanger and still couldn't reach the ones down at the first two settings for skinny trees, lol! Some deer tolerated the smell better than others. Those were the ones I killed the most of obviously. Same thing now with my vape. Some don't seem to mind, while others come unglued. I've never had a very strict regimen in the scent control department anyhow, so chances are if deer were offended by the smell of my smoke, they will also be offended by the other foreign smells permeating from me.

Guess I'll be spending some time now shooting them with my camera and calling for sis. First time I've ever filled tags on consecutive days from the same spot.

Thanks guys! After analyzing a bunch of pics of these things, I came to the conclusion they're much simpler then I originally made them out to be. So, after dinner I got to work on an old piece of 3" chewed up tine right off the main beam to test my simple-ness theory. I cranked this one out from beginning almost to completion in about 20 minutes flat! I still need to clean up some lines and touch up some details (+sand and polish), but I'm already getting the hang of these things pretty good! Here's my second eagle head with a closed mouth just to cut down on time and add a new style to the line up. He's only a 2 inch juvie bald, lol I need to figure out how to finish my eyeballs more realistically and fix that here too.

Thanks man! I can never really tell if some of this stuff s as good or as bad as the way I see it, so I appreciate your feedback. Still learning, so either way it helps me improve.

First time trying one of these double sided dudes. Had a few screw ups along the way that made him un-balanced from one side to the other, but worked through it and found a way to correct them. I've been rough sketching all my outlines and just going wherever they take me from there. Just something I decided I wanted to do from now on to make each piece unique and not just a stamped copy of the last one. Since this was just sort of a practice run, I drilled a hole in the back of him thinking he'd make a pretty cool keychain or something. Next time I'll try one of these off the base on a main beam. This one is only 4 3/4" so I'll probably need to make a few changes with technique and burrs used on the next one.

Just wanted to say thank you to nyslowhand for noticing the fall turkey pic of me and sis in NYODN last week. I submitted that way back in October and had forgotten all about it. Not only was nyslowhand kind enough to bring it to my attention since I'm not a subscriber, but he also recovered his issue he had already given away and sent it to me asking only that I keep posting my pics! Guess that means I'll have to hang a few pics here from today. There could be another double hero shot heading off to press this Monday when me and sis hit the blind for another spring season together, so keep your eyes peeled, lol Thanks again buddy!

Let's hope that's a hiking staff in his hand and not an anal probe!

Depends... Hopefully I don't........ I mean, hopefully HE DIDN'T break a point off the right side. Then he still gets an 18" spread credit that will help push his gross score well over the 20" mark!

While we're at it, no more "special early season" for bowhunters. They can use them things in the regular season with the rest of the old deer hunters.

I don't know man. This post comes across to me as being fueled by jealousy. The same jealousy that leaves a kid stuck at home when dad sneaks off in the wee hours of the morning to go kill that big tom he's been after. Then the old man comes home from his hunt.... has a beer (or 12 )...., and crashes on the couch until the next morning at 4am when he repeats the cycle all over again......ALONE.

Did the neighbors little twerp kid pop a gobbler you were watching or something? You just took the whole point that I was making about the selfishness of some senior hunters and made it all about what YOU want. I have no idea what your intentions are by taking a good thing and turning it ugly, but it's sounding a little bit like a cover up. Let me go get your "Dad of The Year" award.................

Nope- it wont motivate them all, but it may affect a portion that otherwise wouldn't be out there. It's not meant to be a "manual" for mentoring, just gives some guys some guidance to do things right and make the time, due to the restrictions on elder participation. This week before the opener is DYNAMITE for calling in birds in my area. There's a noticeable drop off in vocalization and willingness for them to respond to the calls shortly after that. Things may pick up again mid month as in your area, but by that time the bugs are so bad half of us don't wanna be out there ourselves.

I think the point is more to motivate the mentors to take the youth out BEFORE the mentors get so wrapped up in their own hunts that they don't let the kiddos tag along. You don't have to look too hard to find selfish hunters these days, so the youth season may be the only opportunity some kids get even through the month of May.
