Could be, but isn't it much easier just to tar and feather the guy based on some new reports. Why spend the time to determine whether what he did was legal or not? Yes - sarcasm. Regardless, I suspect his $50k trophy will never hang on his wall.
-
I don't know whether the kill was legal or not, but had the same questions as you VJP. It seems that the lion had a collar on. That alone would likely stop me from releasing an arrow though.

MY mistake - well FSW I hope the deer you release runs right to your worthy client's stand and poses for an easy 20yd shot. Might be easier if you just let your client shoot it in the pen, but then again, you would lose the "fair chase" aspect I guess. Under these circumstances, I stand corrected, it is easy to guide for a shot on a 130" minimum buck in NY. As a suggestion, don't let your hunter know that you are rooting against them so that the local population all inherit the released buck's genes. That too would be bad for business. I have no personal issues with you FSW or high fence hunting for those that choose that route - but this business plan does sound a bit absurd, at least to me. -
Now I get it when they say small bodied deer. Fawn bodies with decent racks. Cool video though.

Agreed. My shepherd is better trained than any other dog I ever had and I put little effort into training her. She just gets it. That said, I wish I could break her from barking at other dogs when they pass in front of the house. I guess that's just her nature but that is one thing I can't seem to train her to stop doing. Shedding is a pain in the neck too. Very loyal. She won't leave my side when I walk around the house unless I tell her to sit and stay.

Wow - hard to believe peak ratio is in the 1930s - where was Ralph Nader when he was really needed?

DB - you articulated with greater explanation why I think a guide service in NY with a 130" minimum cannot be successful. In short, we simply don't have enough 130" plus deer to support it as an ongoing venture. I would be happy to be proven wrong. Maybe some day. BTW - if NY did have that many 130'ers roaming around like the other states mentioned, high fence hunting would be even less desirable to most. -

Gotcha - your not guiding. Good luck with the hunting. Killing and seeing a 120-130 is great, but guiding with a 130" min in NY is a whole different story. Yes - I think it would be hard to be a successful guide in NY with the bar set that high. We also hunt and see bucks 130" or better every year. That doesn't mean I could be a successful guide with a 130" minimum - unless you define success as getting a few non-repeat clients. You have been at it much longer than me with much more land to hunt so who knows. Anyways, I hope you get that 130 in Letchworth. -

Maybe the 109,000 acres is not the adk. I don't know. Again, the question is really whether you intend to guide in NY with a 130" minimum and, if so, I would like to know the success after the season. -

"1000 acres of land in a solid block with great agriculture planted fields bordering 109,000 acres of pretty lightly hunted land" That could easily be read to indicate you intend to guide there. Regardless, and even accepting that you have a wall full of 130s over the last 50 years, DO YOU INTEND TO GUIDE? Simple question. You stated you were going to do so, but don't confirm it when asked. If it was a joke, no need to confirm. But if you do actually plan to guide with a 130" minimum, please keep us apprised of how many successful clients you have at year's end. I am honestly curious since you say its pretty simple, and that would be a huge accomplishment in NY in my opinion. -

It could be implied from post 29, but its not stated clearly. Not sure why you mention the adk in that post if you only plan to hunt your private land. Regardless, unless you are hunting those 1 acre pens you mentioned, I think a 130" minimum on free range deer for purposes of guiding would be a huge accomplishment if successful in NY, even on your private land. -

SOOOOO, are you really guiding this year? I would be curious to see how many 130"ers your clients take this year. Please keep us updated. Seriously, I am curious if you could be successful with such a minimum in NY, in the ADK or elsewhere. -

Thought that's what you were saying earlier in the thread. Maybe I misunderstood or the comment was tongue in cheek. Are you guiding in NY next year? If u are guiding anywhere in this state free range with a 130" min, I wish you and your clients good luck. They are around but certainly not in sufficient numbers to support a business model. Might be tough for repeat business. -
I have closed my eyes, but have never gone to sleep. Does this still apply to me?

FSW - did I understand you to say that you are charging $3000 for guiding people to hunt in the ADK? And to top it off, you have an imposed 130" min? -
Kiki is my first shepherd and the smartest dog I have had. But, she is aggressive towards other dogs in my neighborhood - to the point where I think most are scared to death of her - back hair up, growling, etc. She is friendly with people, just hates other dogs. Funny thing is that my last dog was 180 bullmastiff and I would much rather have her ticked at me than the little shepherd.

Must be a well trained shepherd. Mine would go nuts wanting to attack it. She is only 75lbs but thinks she is Godzilla.

Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
moog5050 replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I heard one report of a hunter that always smelled like Irish Spring. It took him 30 years to harvest his first deer. Not saying the two facts are related or that is the only reason it took 30 years, but .... He did shoot a buck two years ago. Admirable persistence in my opinion. -
Anyone hunt with a Browning Automatic Rifle
moog5050 replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I had a BAR in .30-06. Never hunted with it but it was reliable at the range and held 1.5' groups. I sold it because I wanted another sako. If my area was rifle back then, I probably would have kept it. -
Might be OK on the river vs. on the canal. Again, I just looked at regs quickly and they prohibit firearms under prohibited activity. Then again, I will agree that you were a criminal in any event.
