In fairness to Mike, establishing a 501©3 is a lot of work.

Are you saying I shouldn't own multiple guns of the same caliber? Hmmm, you must have been speaking with my better half. She has brain washed you all.

Does anyone use low powered scopes?

I have a fixed 4x on my 30/30 too culver. BTW - let me know on that other gun. -

You are funny pygmy. Where I hunt (thick nasty), the .270 is overkill. The 4x makes sense. This just happened to be a field kill (my first ever). I am not a big fan of long shots. Just way too impersonal and I am no sniper. lol -

I have a fixed 4x on my .270 and killed a deer last year at 240yds. That said, I would have like more magnification at that distance. 2-7 would have been nice. My typical shots are 120yds or less. -
Best 20ft Ladder Stand?
moog5050 replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
We have a few field and stream altitude stands that are 24' to the platform. They are a pain to set and heavy, but pretty stable as long you maintain the straps. You will notice that the straps on ladder stands that high tend to become loose because the tree is moving more up there from the wind. It put a big scare into me last year on gun opener when I sat in one and the stand slid down the tree 6". I was nervous standing up to re-tighten the strap. lol Honestly, I agree with others that if you plan to go high, a hang on and sticks is a better option. At least the straps are not being loosened by a stationary ladder stand and its much easier to set. -
If you are bored and a Facebook user...

Hey ... wait a minute .... do I get a royalty? lol -
Phade was alluding to another parcel on which we have permission that is only 23 acres (10 of which is field) but we hammer the deer there. Approximately 20 killed from there the last 2 years including 5 or 6 decent bucks. We also often hunt it with 3 people on that limited 13 acres of hardwoods. When a friend needs to see deer, its where I bring them. How is that possible? Add a really nice public park to two of the borders and place it in the middle of an extremely high density area. That's why 20 of the right acres is better than 100 acres of mediocre or poor ground. Do your homework bone seeker. You will find what you want and don't settle.
-
Focus on high density areas with solid access and neighboring properties are an important part of the equation. Phade is also right that having a no hunting parcel (ex. public park) next door is a HUGE plus. I bought 40 acres of marsh between a preserve and farmed fields because I wanted to know I always had a place to go regardless of leases or permission. Cost as much as a decent car, but it was worth it to me and taxes are pretty reasonable being mostly wetland. I like the security of knowing I have my own place and I like spending time trying to manage it. Big bonus, its less than 30 min from my home.

The carpeted bed sissy truck is sporting goodyear duratracs. Love em. Great in the snow. easily powered through a field with a foot of snow in it.

A whopping two jobs for me - bouncer at many bars/nightclubs starting in high school and through college and now a commercial litigator. Guess I have always been paid to fight, one way or the other. lol I did cut lawns when I was young, so maybe that's 3 jobs.

car wax works too but if they are burying that deep, you need a tougher target. I would seriously look at the Rinehart rhino blocks if your idea doesn't work.
-
They sell arrow or bolt lubricant. A light coating of oil may help. That said, I shoot FMJs and they are a breeze to pull out due to the aluminum exterior. Rhino block isn't bad with carbons either.

Yeah right - the same guy that carefully moves spiders outside so as not to harm them. Definitely not in his blood.

"parent/youth" - just a joke (never mind).

Did you talk to my dad? Fingers crossed.

Let that old dog bark again! Nice job.

MD and TN are two I would look into. -
Anyone else have property in the wind farm project zone?
moog5050 replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
Pretty sure that most would view a subdivision next door vs. a wind farm as very different and, even without any research, I would bet that the wind farm does hurt neighboring property values, unlike a subdivision which often increases property values when utilities and sewers are brought in. In any event, you are barred from buying land in Webster. All that said, if you want to put a few up out your way and move to Iowa, just make sure I have a few good stands at the new place. -

You say that now, but if your property value plummeted because of the neighbor's decision, you might just change your mind. I understand the desire to optimize your financial well being, but doing so at the expense of your neighbor must be seriously considered. BTW - you are not invited to move next door. lol -
I shoot better with both eyes open. Tried aiming by looking down the arrow and it just didn't work for me. BUT, I am not very experienced either. Other than changing to a LH bow, not sure you have much choice.
-
LOL - Thanks. I am the only person in my family to hunt ever (except a great uncle who passed long before I started). It was actually a gift from my barber, It is in pretty good shape too. Would have been nice to start with a longer bow, but I will use what I have.
