Gotta be raised in the woods raised as in off the ground. After putting a lot of time into a new property this year in a stand. And then sitting in a blind 2 nights ago, I've determined the advantages of height far outweigh the advantages of cover from a blind. Raised blind? Best of both worlds. Well I got outta work at 1030. All day to hunt. My last day of northern. Had the great idea to pull my hang on and use some hawk sticks to set it in the center of the property overlooking a bunch of trails. Well It all went good until I got to the new spot. Mentally fixated on hanging I. The spot with the best views, I was unable to get a good climb or a level stand. All the trees were leaning out and I couldn't get on the good side. After trying 2 trees I gave up. Hiked the mile back to the car, dumped the stand and sticks and went and sat a blind. Didn't see anything. Moral of the story, when doing a same day hang and hunt. Pick the best tree. Not the best view. Had I don't that I could have had a successfully hunt in a new spot. 2 good trails But no I had to go for the trees with views of 4 trails. Got into the woods at 1130. Still hunted a property I got access to a month ago. Thus far I've only hunted the edge. And seen deer 90% of the outings. I went around the the woods for the first time. Turns out it looks just as good in the middle and the other side as it does from the side I hunt 3 ridges forming a t shape. Making 2 draw/funnels 2 distinct small bedding areas. Corn bordering 2 sides of the square property. Heavy use trails on each ridge and in the valleys between. Found a couple nice spots for stands next year. No deer seen. Went to my main stand. Way too windy to sit. Big gusts moving the tree a foot or more. Got down and moved an extra blind into the center on the widest ridge lookingf down into bedding and a draw coming up between the 2 corn fields. Again no deer. Either way a great afternoon. Got out for last 1.5 hrs last night. Had one the twin doe fawns hang out for 30 minutes. Caught my wind once but didn't leave after looking around. Guess someone took her sister. They been running together all year. Great sit. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

Got out with my youngest for about an hour today from 1230 to 130. Felt real good out there. But she couldn't hack it. So we packed it in. Good times either way. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

So I was browsing the 2016 harvest report. And it seems to me that largest deer take is in the west fingerlakes region. Highest take per sq mile. And highest percentage of deer over 2.5 years old. I didn't get too deep into the specific wmus Am I reading this right? Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

I should that I climb with the stand on my back. Hence I can't always use the backpack on my back. I use the claw slings currently. Super grippy Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

I hate carrying my rifle up my climbing sticks. I also hate hoisting it up with my backpack on a rope. Has anyone tried a 3 point sling on their hunting rifle so it can hang close against their chest as they climb? I do a good bit of hang and hunts. Sometimes with only the last few hours of hunting time left. I don't like hoisting my rifle via the rope with my backpack also tied in. Makes for a heavy haul. And the gun sways potentially banging against the tree or ladder. Possibly jarring the scope. I tried 2 different haul ropes. One for bag and one for the gun, but it makes for a tangled mess when climbing at times. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

Took a 5 day break. Heading out tomorrow for the last 2 hrs. Should be good. Crashing temps and high pressure May just have to take a young buck to end my season. Passed on more bucks this year than I have ever seen in the previous years combined. Plus it would be my first 2 deer season ever. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

2 fawns and a spike. All saw me. But due to my uncanny ability to turn into a statue none of them blew out. And all went home safely. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

Update****** Sat the stand tonight Had 2 young does show up over my left shoulder in the corner of the field closest to me. They just popped up most likely from the swamp below the field. I froze and they made their way into the woods. I was able to stand as the tree was between us. They didn't blow out. I was able to get my gun up and on them and they made their way behind me through the woods. I thinks it's the twins whose mother I missed with the muzzle loader earlier. Then just at light another popped up behind me this time in the woods. I swirled in the stand with my leg hanging off thinking he would keep moving along my right side but he saw me and stared as I froze for about 3 minutes. Gun up and all. Then made his way straight at me and behind me. Little spike. I let him walk though I had an opportunity to take him. So I definitely need to move 2 trees down away from the swamp so I can face that direction and not have to stand and turn to shoot. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

So as promised I went and hung a new stand on the field edge facing into the woods near the swamp. Once I got up I realised I was a few too many trees away from the swamp to see in there for a shot. But it was a great sit. And I'm confident in the stand. But..... At legal light I packed up to head down the tree. At the bottom I was futzing around untying my haul rope etc and I heard a noise. I look up to see a doe about 15 yards from me. I freeze.. she hangs for a minute looking from me and then behind her. and then bounds off with her tail up. So I finish packing up. I stand and stretch my back and just as I get all my gear on (hang on , pack, gun) I see another deer stomping her way towards me at about 30 yards straight at me. I freeze. She gets to about 25 and then bolts screeching 3-4 times and as this happens I see there was a second deer off to my right. So. Did I just burn this stand? Give it a day or two to rest? Or is it fine because the caught me on the ground. And not in the tree. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
