How do you attach your safety line to the tree strap
Nomad replied to mowin's topic in General Hunting
Strictly a ladder stand guy now, well one Lone Wolf hang on if needed . Before a lifeline ran from ground to above stand ,clipped onto a Prusik at ground . This carabiner stays on my harness ,and all ladders ( except today’s.. ) have a strap in place to clip into . I also have a spare closed loop and a short length of rope with a figure eight tied at each end in my pack, so I can rig up almost anything if strap is missing . On fat trees I have used a screw in step and tied a Prusik onto it to clip on to . I have a bit of an assortment of things to work with . -

Recap , one of those days .... Sleep a bit longer till 5AM so no time to spare now , I let the dog out ,I see him start to,pee, so I go back inside, a bit later he barks, so I,let him in . As I eat my Shredded Wheat on the couch he takes a dump in the middle of the living room , clean that up go in basement to get dressed. My harness is tangled up worse then a Chinese rope puzzle , get that untangled put it on ,and one leg strap is still messed up , take it off redo . Climb into stand , no strap in place to clip into , well I have a short rope for this purpose, it’s to short for this tree, figure I’ll just hunt a bit then add another short one I have to it . Sit down and pull out phone this is when the doe comes in from behind me and busts me . Later I stand to wrap the two ropes around trunk so I can clip in, swing rope around ,reach around so both arms hugging the tree, I look and see a fawn watching me .... At least I’m home in time to go,to the gym when mytwo favorite women there workout . -

Wife makes a mean tuna casserole ! Still have about 15 pounds of venison, ground / sausage in freezer , 15 or so, pounds of chicken and 50 or so pounds of canned venison and chicken on the shelves. Should get 30-40 pounds of Elk from my buddy in a couple weeks , well if he does his part ! Of and 15-20 cans of tuna . If the time is right I’ll take one , perhaps .....

I’ve taken them early in bow, and other times not at all . I haven’t shot a doe in bow in years , just waiting for a decent buck , I figure I can take a doe almost at Will in gun season , if I’m lacking meat . That said last night I put a doe tag in my pack , thinking of if it’s the right stand, and time I may shoot a doe now . I won’t take one in my thicket because I don’t want to go making noise and stomping all around in there , I won’t take one at the beginning of a sit ,although that might change . Only reason I’m thinking of an early doe is Costanzas’s turn around time in early bow is 1/4 the wait of gun season , plus I want to can another 20 pounds of venison, so a doe now would fulfill those two things . Tomorrow’s stand is near a slope so that’s an easy drag, and I can get the truck close as well , so stay tuned .

When he called me and was asking my opinion of the hunt he was thinking of, I thought he WAS asking me , then he said he was going with his wife .* She can horseback ride ,hike, and fish during the day, while he hunts , then the outfitters feed them great dinners . So here I sit eating left over tuna noddle casserole , and hunting the same farm for the last 32 years . * had to rephrase that . -

Well zippo . They are cutting the bean field that runs along the back of the woods , which may account for no movement from there . Did pull a camera, went to back stand to tighten up straps ,and worked my way over to the other side of property to clean out trail across drainage ditch as it grows up so much I’d never find the opening in the dark . So that was productive . Called buddy on way home ,as he’s going on an Elk hunt soon, told him I’ll pay for the shipping and related expenses for as much as he wants to give me . Back at it in the AM . -

My walk in Thursday AM, I was amazed seeing the giant moon in the sky . Saw 8 deer, six bucks in the beans from light to about 9 . I don’t really keep, track or pay much attention to moon phases , so,I can’t say when I see more or less deer .

Good ,luck fellas ! I’m taking a break from opening morning till perhaps Sunday afternoon . Don’t much like afternoon hunts, but I need to open up the path into one stand ,and I’d never find it in the dark . -
There was some discussion on live from the woods thread about ,electronic aids and communication of deer movements . So I started this thread . Back in the day I recall , it was illegal to,use hand helds ie walkie talkies to broadcast deer movements , it used to be in the booklet one got with their license. I haven’t seen that in years probably due to everyone using phones and text ,I feel they gave up . Anyone remember that ? Today guys get live updates from cell cameras and text messages and adjust their hunting accordingly, something that doesn’t fit into my style of hunting , but to each his own . Is texting your buddy about what’s heading his way ,just a helpful tip or should he rely on his keeping still and eyes open and relying on his skill to get a kill ? Cell pics sent to your phone , alerting you , just using current technology or and unfair advantage ? Argue away .

Used to be illegal to use electronic devices to communicate deer movements and such . Back when we all used walkie talkies , you had to be careful what you said ,as DEC would monitor . Havent seen that in the hunting booklet in sometime though . -
