  1. I'm not what you would call up on new stuff. I've only heard of two of those and never saw any of them... For years I used a Mangus two blade, swedged not screw ins. Last few years Mangus Stinger 2 bladse w/bleeders . I like simple. No moving parts, o rings, flipping, opening closing, chisle points, pencil points, no parts that come off, loosen, tighten and so on. Just a sharp piece of flat steel that shoots same as field points and zips through deer.
  2. Hum Webster south of Ridge near the line. I know a Capt. on the job who's family owns a large farm there ......
  3. The buck 110 is a classic amoung classics for many reasons. It was THE folder that really made lock backs what they are today. Fasteddie thats ka bar is a classic style as well. I love the look of stacked leather washers. Bark river makes sone top notch FB hunters as well.
  4. Dave that was funny. That guys looks pretty solid for 54 y/o. Not that 54 is old as I'm almost 52..... and in many ways stronger then in my youth.
  5. Right now Dick's Webster has 2 for 1 15 foot ladder stands, 6 left as of ten minutes ago. Also 2 for 1 Comfort Zone ground blinds. that is all, carry on.
  6. Well having worked for him,and having a friend who was second in charge of the RPD when he was chief. I'm happy to see him move on........
  7. Ya lots of walking. Or driving I know a guy who drives around streets in Irondequot looking in peoples front yards and did VERY well in years past. I also walk along expressways, just off in the woods and fields. I do this where I see a lot of road kills.... many make it off the shoulder before they drop. I guess this is more dead deer hunting then shed hunting lol. Another thing is to walk creeks and fences, spots they have to jump as the jumping may jar them off . Another good spot is by my house in Webster where guys bow hunt. Its "tight" and guys don't want to follow up if it takes them near houses and businesses. I've found whole bucks more then once including a freak drop antler with a "bulb" type end.
  8. Just found this thread ! I'm a knife guy, been in Blade magazine a couple times and wrote a piece that was in Tactical Gear magazine . I'm no expert, just like knives and learned a thing or two along the way. There is no perfect knife for hunters as we all want and do differant things with our knives. Once we know what those are we can find a good one for THAT person. If you just want to gut whitetails then yes a 3-4 inch fixed blade seems to be a great chioce. But what about the guy who skins and quarters his animal , to pack out ? Or guys like Doc ( and myself) who find comfort in a large fixed blade that can help build a shealter or chop firewood if things go bad and a night in the woods is in order ? I've gutted deer with every type of knife from a swiss army knife to large FB. Today I use an Old Timer Stockman. Thats a slip joint with 3 carbon steel blades, the largest about 3 inches long. Yes carbon steel requires maintenance and its a pain to clean. But I like the old school folder. I also carry a large FB mostly a Puma White Hunter. I have a pre '64 and a new one as well. This allows me to chop any branches that I may not have trimmed, gives me a tool I can use if things don't go quite as planned. Plus I'm a knife guy and I like a big FB, and where else but the woods can I run around with one on my belt ? The saying is a large knife can be made to do anything a small one can do, but a small one can't do everything a large one can. I don't quite believe that 100 % but theres a lot of truth there.
  9. First off great bucks and even greater hunters ! Second if I started tracking a buck at 7:00 by 7:20 i'd be trespassing .
  10. Glad to see someone found a use for Budweiser .

We used to canoe it each spring. There is a max flow rate where they let you canoe, but we never checked in or anything to begin with. Rememeber now you'll have to pack up and out your deer and canoe plus gear.Plus cars at each end. Its pretty easy even in the spring, the fall would be slow and flat I would guess.

So four seasons, do you have stands up that go under water in the spring ? Nothing like being in your stand and seeing tires and other trash above you in the tree lol. I have a feeling you know what I mean . Happy Hunting.
  13. I was "cleaning my gun and it just went off". Well to some folks wiping it with a rag is cleaning. Then again, most folks lie when the shoot someone by being stupid . It won't go off unless you pull the trigger and it won't hit anyone unless the muzzle is pointed at them.

Some spots have "roads " that go down for canoe trippers, park employees and so forth. Most have gates,in bow season if you ask real nice and catch the right guy, they'll open it and let you drive down. We use deer carts and manpower mostly and ropes and 4-1 pully system sometimes for some spots. My buddy from out west still calls letchworth "flatland hunting" btw. he'll spend 1-2 days packing out meat. A few guys and a cart works well.Yes sometimes you may be back to camp late like midnight if your alone or with one guy , but thats rare. fourseasons, thats GREAT good job on them bucks.
  15. Good catch !! Now you can buy that $600 coat ........ Its hit and miss at each store.Dicks in Greece had a 2 for 1 a few days after Webster did . A guy on the job knew someone who works there and they called him to let him know . Each store does it when they get tired of the stands sitting around I guess. Its all timing, kinda like hunting .
  16. Don't know about the coat,I would ask in a forum for states and terr. that have real cold weather. As far as cost ? Big deal go for it,Got the bills payed and money saved ? drop the $600 on the coat. Heck how many guys buy 40k and up 4x4's that get 14mpg because " i hunt a lot " lol. 600 ? one months payment , and they lost 10 grand just driving it off the lot.......... I got a box store coat that I've used well over 25 years my daughter now uses it. Your coat will factor out to less then 30 bucks a year easy. My new coat was 300,my boots 200,under armour 120 plus another layer or two.I figure i wear 700 plus bucks worth as it is another 300 if it'll add a good bit of needed warmth? a bargin. Buy the best cry only once.

Well some guys on the job get 2 cabins for a few weeks. We do a bow hunt there with about 12 guys or so for part of this. Now some of the guys have hunted it over 30 years so they know it well. We all see deer almost each time out, and lately bear here and there. It can be quite good hunting IMO. Someone takes a nice buck each hunt, we pass on does as we go all the way to the river bottom in some spots and it can take a few of us some time to get them out. Some places we rig up a pulley system. We bring rope bags and equipment just for this. Only once did I see other bow hunters, but like I said we know the area very well, don't hunt the week ends for the most part and walk in far. yet some guys shoot deer right behind the cabins ! My best advice that I'll put on the net is, find the farms on the west side of the park and remember, they'll be going up out of the river bottom to feed at night and back into the bottoms for the day. For me Letchworth is great because you can get a cabin for a couple hundred a week. The hunting is good , share it with friends for a fraction of the cost of owning a cabin. You do need to reserve one on the day they become available for hunting season. I don't gun hunt it,too many of my friends that I bow hunt it with have run into to many yahoo's in gun.
  19. fasteddie, yep your right about the signs. Sunday was a one day only deal just at the Webster store. During the day the sign said 39 bucks on one side and 2 for one on the other..... When my buddy called me and we went back Sunday night the sign just said $39 bucks, but when we had them scan one it still came up 2 for 1. 2 left sounds right, we left 2 or 3 all with boxes with corner damage. BTW they were $29 bucks the week before ! Crazy.
  20. BTW, dont preach to me, I hunt 8h as well and spend more time in the woods than the average guy. There lies the problem, most guys don't have much time to spend in the woods, and cutting it won't make them happy. Me I can hunt 22 days a month without taking time off,yet I take at least 4 weeks off for bow and gun. btw nov.20 th to dec.12th is not 4 weeks........
  21. Today a friend and I bought 16 tree stands. Hang ons are marked 39 bucks but THEY ARE BUY ONE GET ONE FREE ! Dicks in Webster NY. we left 4 or 5 hang ons as of 6:00 tonight.
  22. WNYbuckhunter, I'm not sure what your saying ? 52 weeks in a year gun is 3 weeks, so we have 49 where the deer are not pressured. If we change it to 51 it will some how make for better hunting and less pressured deer ? Are you saying late season ML and bow would then be better? were going to short change the largest number of hunters for the few ??? I don't know I'm an average hunter. I get 2-5 deer a year for the last 20 some years . I hunt 8h I really don't see a problem now . I know tons of guys killing big bucks on a regular basis. We get wall hangers every year on the farm and guys at work do very well too. Hunt hard hunt often, pass up the small bucks .
  23. Some of this has been mentioned already but...... Most gun deer are killed the first few days so not sure what lopping off the end would do,other then upset a large number of gun hunters . As far as nuisance permits, were talking a very small number of deer killed on them. DMAP's account for 5% of the whole deer take and DDP's ( true nuisance permits ) even less at around 2% IIRC . We often fill our DMAP's and not our regular doe tags so often times its a wash . I myself see plenty of deer in bow season in, gun season where I hunt it can be challenging, Perhaps thats why they call it hunting ? I did go to the southern tier where deer were all over the place. I took a doe at a camp in one sitting, the 25th deer out of that camp at that point. Everyone at that camp fills all their tags and I saw 60 plus deer in fields at 12 noon ! Location.location, location ! I could perhaps see a one buck rule. could we make NYS better ? Sure . But we're not like many of the "big" deer hunting states. I hunt Montana, there everyone shoots nice bucks for the most part. BUT they have several times the hunting land and FEW hunters. They have 16,000 bow hunters, i got that many with in an hours drive from me ! The deer have no pressure, the hunters have limitless land to hunt , some things we can't change.
  24. Big ASAT fan here. Not a large selection though.
  25. LOL as my kids would type.....
