  3. Baked cod fish ,home cut seasoned steak fries, coleslaw, and spinach.
  4. Well nadda tonight..save one yearling doe and she stayed just beyond my comfort zone...then at close I heard bucks fighting on the ridge below me. I also had turkey talking on that ridge. I have a blind there but no stand...May need to hook the climber up down there. It was a gorgeous night very little wind and jus t the right temps...cold now though.
  5. The original stands at camp were all in iron wood trees....deer travel that area non stop...beech, apple, iron wood, oak and shag bark....It makes a heck of a fire wood ...but is hell on the chain saws...we never cut it until snow was on the ground...I remember those blue sparks shooting from the saw...lol
  6. db, I've mentioned before that the deer here will stand on their hind legs fore ever just to be able to reach the fall clusters of hophorn seed...Now whether the hophorn produce a bunch of mast or not they become a candy store when in seed. the one I took the picture of is right next to the dogs kennel and the deer hang there non stop until the seed clusters are gone. I also had the DEC tree guys point to my hophorns and say..." you want turkey? don't cut those" PS...have you noticed my turkey pics?
  7. With out the better examples too difficult to explain...Someday I'll get the camera out and take pictures of what I'm seeing ...most of the stand is down hill from the house...We are just now getting a good growth of them on this side of the road...although we have a few giants scattered on this side.
  8. Again Pete, I thought I was specific... We have 200 red oaks ...there are no white oaks on our place...ZERO, what I said was, some of the lower branched leafs are rounded on these reds with the REST of them all looking like normal red oak leafs. These are not the best examples...by far.... but these are the ones I have near the house with low enough leafs to get pics of...Yes pointed but rounder that the natural cut leaf of these oaks. Not all young oaks are like this. Many, the leafs are all "normal" and some have mixed leafs of no points with the pointed cut leaf.
  9. All of our iron wood here and down at camp in Alfred look the same or shaggier... We have a very smooth barked(even large mature trees) pig nuts here and shag bark hickories at camp...some time marking future nut trees(young) from the iron wood is hard...looking at a distance.
  10. OK.... not trying to be contrary here...honestly.... but my property is loaded with beech...now my driveway is lined in beech...sorry, these in my driveway produce some nuts every year and tons of nuts every other or 2 years ...no getting around it...for one thing, I talk about it nearly every year on here... Now I have found that once they get the canker they produce more..I assumed stress causing the production. We have many many smooth barked beech ...they usually do not get sick until they have some good size to them. Also I would like to mention on our 200 red oaks the younger or lower leafs tend to have some with rounded edges while the rest are basically normal pointed red oak leafs.
  11. That is why I said bark alone...ours are WAY bigger than base ball bats and the younger ones have long ,although much thinner thickness wise than the shag hickory, peeling bark. I should have been more specific put two young trees side by side no leaf cover a novice could be confused...I just took these pics of a small hophorn in the hedge row. the quote contains a mature shag bark hickory...
  12. Still sticking with choke cherry could be wrong...Now as far as video... Great. That said. your saying you can't mistake the shag bark hickory, well to someone starting out I think...on bark alone mind you, a eastern hophorn near a shag bark hickory...they could get confused...IMO

    Weather

So... They are now calling for 2.22 inches of rain Thursday and 1.o8 inches on Friday......The be-ouch thing about it is ...I can't complain.... we still need the moisture and with Rochester sucking the lakes dry, they doubly need it...
  14. It was a quiet walk in and very very bright...I think I have deer bedded in the hemp plot and they were moving off quietly as I approached the road. I had a mouse visit me in the blind for a bit...squirrel climb the mulberry cam tree and crows drive me near mad with their racket...NOTHING else. I'm thinking I need to say I'm only deer hunting to have the turkeys show back upStill not a bad sit..That blind could be a great rifle spot. Should have thought to put a enclosed blind there years ago.... It sprinkled a few times at day break and the temps are much cooler...The rain last night kept the cams quiet but there were still some activity,no bucks. Perhaps this will be a no buck year for me...The next several days of rain isn't helping my out look at all....Though admittedly...I haven't hunted nearly as much as I normally do,between weather and The whole stomach thing. I'm also super surprised that they have not touched the turnips...and we've had several frosts...though they have been chewing and stomping on the pumpkins and the weeds and hemp protected the beans in that plot....The clovers and the wht. tail institute chicory plus are getting mowed to the ground.
  15. Grilled wild turkey burgers...that's the last of that spring Tom 1/2 breast made two full dinners and a burger for lunch. Brussels sprouts, Mac and cheese.
  16. When you say bark..are you talking about Steve pics...because that is an ash tree...I don't see any bark in the first group of pics accept the second cherry bark. I put up a identifier link for the choke cherry and here is one for 2 different ash barks.. http://www.nyis.info/?action=eab_woodlot_ash_identification
  17. That's nothing...you should see both of mine ...it is normal and when you spray it....I do mine let them dry 24hrs and hit them again they will be fine...just looks worse they they are.
  18. Rob you did the smart thing..Now here are 2 scenarios you can ponder. 1. Some idiot did this on what grampy describes as a busy public area to hunt over it. They should be turned in for just being stupid, besides the fact they are doing something illegal. 2. Someone that knows hunting laws and is anti hunting set that up in hopes of having a hunter get nailed for hunting on lands that have or have had mineral /salt licks on them..So turning it in allows you give law enforcement a heads up...saving you or another hunter a mess to deal with. BTW, did you ask if hunting the area was now off limits or OK?
  19. So my property is beech different species of cherry, ash,oak ,hophorn and several species of maple..with a few birch, nuts, locust and witch hazel thrown in... Top is Beech, middle is Cherry and bottom I think is a choke cherry totally different from wild black cherry
  20. Do you even know what a mineral site really is or how deer use them? I mean really..hahahahaha
  21. If he's like me...a monster would have had to walk by in this heat for me to have shot....(turkey hunting with the compound)
  22. Try a turkey call...Because I call with my natural voice I do this all the time when things are slow...If you koo and purr the deer know the turkey are relaxed and feeding...It is the "alls clear" sound to a deer and they will come in to see whats on the menu.
  23. Great pull ,good luck with that last buck!
  24. beech, cherry,?...cherry or birch http://leafsnap.com/species/Prunus virginiana/
  25. So my jalapenos produced like crazy this year and besides giving them away I dried some and made poppers then froze them. ( we ate a lot of them) I pickled some..Wow my poppers weren't bad, some heat but manageable. I had one pint of pickled ones not seal and tried one slice...OMG! lol My Son is going to love these! I'm thinking great in dips, in chili, bean soups, and on subs(Ohhhh... tuna sub with hot peppers)...maybe pulled pork?...What a great flavor...garlic and bay leaf...may have to take seeds out of next batches in future, very little will go a loooonnnngggg ways. Anyone else have hot pickled pepper recipes?
