  1. Never would....I see no problem in comfortable hunting...just lets you hang in there longer ...a good thing....
  2. That's my sons second Job...it pays the winter propane bill....beautifying the state...you'd be surprised what ppl dump on the side of seasonal use roads....
  3. actually Paula......It's only polite to have enough seating for guests I like your stand chose...SG have some great deals...got all my manufactured stands from them...except the Tree Lounge
  4. Only once...got a deer...but was so sick I was afraid it would run away...down at camp....shot it went down got up and I shot it until it dropped...I thought the other shots had missed for it wasn't moving far and definitely not fast...hit it every single time..last shot went straight down the middle....Mr B didn't talk to me for a week...only deer I've never been able to clean my self.....Nor could his dad or their friend.....Dad went up and got him out of his stand...yep never ever again would I go out with a bunch of girls 10yrs younger than I... PS...that was when hunting started on a Monday.....I had gone out Saturday night....bad...bad ...it was bad...lol
  5. Dang as of today...many plants are up an inch already...was checking to see if the milorganite was working....lots of tracks still crossing to the plot in middle...pretty sure none of the sunflower seed made it in any areas....lesson learned
  6. No different then years and years ago I noticed Japan was and have done the same thing...The US has been for sale since the late 70's
  7. will never grasp the need for a swivel seat or heat structure. I use to think like that...trekking the hills of Alfred in 3ft of snow...wind blowing and icicles hanging off your lashes and nose....then..I bought land where bullets are whizzing by and trees next to you are getting cut in half....yep took to the trees....as time went on my foolish youth has caught up with me...risking more injuries in rocky uneven 45 degree slopes...just is unacceptable ...you can only brake ...tear and dislocate body parts so many times before you cripple your self.. .Then you have the cold..older skin thins..... and when at the age of twelve you and your girl friend fall through the ice in Canseraga Creek while sledding ...then soaked have to walk a mile home in a white out....that old frost bite injury...They actually stood our clothes up to dry them out....equates to huge water blisters all over your lower torso and arms if you get too cold...not pleasant....So enclosed and even some heated blinds...keeps me out doing what I love and for me that's all that matters...I stopped trying to prove how tough I can be years ago...now I want to just plain enjoy...watching the critters and hopefully getting a clean kill shot even in late season....but most of my deer are taken early any was..Why I'm glad for the Oct 1 opener
  8. From the deck of shooting house...and I can't remember the last time I relaxed and watched the clouds go bye...that pic is directly above my head as I sat on the deck....nice summer beeze and all....
  9. Pictures...lets hope the after ones are much more green...This is the lower field...the green in the middle is a mowed clover /chicory planting...the area where trees are planted ...This year...is where the Alfalfa / clover is planted...the rest hemp/bean mix....
  10. Panther sighting in NYS........ Oooppps.......Not just our little Jade..
  11. It's genetics at it's finest.....lol
  12. IMO it's a tad bit simpler than that...it's the age old story of haves and have nots....gunners who don't hunt archery think archers have all the advantage and they want it with out working for it...period Now if the DEC changed dates and put gun season first...even though most archers gun hunt as well....would think gunners have the advantage over their preferred archery and they'd want that time and to put it politely would ...complain just as hard as the gunners do now.. One that doesn't hunt would have to stand back and say why? deer don't migrate out of state during those times....because of one three letter word...RUT......which goes to Docs....assertion of media hype I equate it to kids in a sand box with a pail and just one shovel....every body wants the shovel Now!!! This plays out in every thing in life...money vs none private ed vs public..and on and on...HUMAN NATURE
  13. Doc...correct me on the Honeoye situation...I could be wrong and it may be urban legion...but didn't that occur on a farm owned by a man named Meuller...and it was due to many years of him keeping his property closed off from ALL hunting and attracting deer with feed?...and didn't part of that land belong to one of the Finger lake colleges?...I can't recall all I heard on the subject....
  14. It seems so....but it goes to show no not just NYS has a problem with allowing them or when...but as I said so many times before compromise...at least they (Illinois hunters) were willing to compromise.... here's and example of 6:1...1/2 a dozen to another.... http://lohv-ny.org/L...ow/Crossbow.pdf
  15. would post this for you....now that's not a bad compromise IMO.... www.heartlandoutdoors.com/scattershooting/story/crossbow_bill...http://www.heartland...ossbow_bill... once there go to hunting...then scroll to story...this is the only site I have pasting issues with...sorry....lol
  16. I went down to see how the fields looked...it rained non stop from 11pm Monday until around 7pm Tuesday then went down to 48 last night.......Sunday/Monday planting and seed germination today in all of it...I know this because some of the seed was on top of the ground and the sprouts had grown enough to anchor them selfs in the soil....unfortunately...rodents and or birds found the sunflower seeds...many opened shells on top of ground...funny thing is the wet quail haven soybeans actually look like the slugs they are sharing the ground with ...and the birds have not touched them...the Milorganite is working...stinks kinda nasty there .....I experimented with spreading a sm. amount of seed over a newer clover plot and a lightly disced trail I planned on planting this fall...same thing seed germinated and has anchored it's self to the soil...fingers still crossed
  17. Well if they do come from three miles then they are bringing in tow there young...and when they leave they will eventually kick those young out for fawning...then you have young buck and even some doe that now have an area they 'll remember to return to and start their own groups....win win
  18. please be careful with that...make sure he is insured....make a no liability contract..notarized...and he could take your wood and never return to clear the land as needed....if he just cuts and leaves stumps...then he got every thing for nothing...a small fee per cord..written and you get something he gets something.........believe me even ppl you know can't be trusted to do the right thing....feel the sting in my statement?....I still do
  19. Don't say this often about hunting videos but just that snippet was AWSOME!!...Ooohhh smart guys showing so many regular ole gals...Thank you ...looking forward to the video...LOVE the laid back easy on ears music....
  20. Well that is where the experiments come in....and where I part ways with all the fancy designer seed brands....you need to let the brother in-law know that especially with new acreage you don't need and shouldn't waste your money on anything but simple seeds that the deer will eat...and even then if they aren't use to it ...in your area...they won't like it very well ,the first year.......Also you don't necessarily have to or should plant it all.... Remember I told a neighbor mow and they will come...for here mowing means clover.......plant the outer edges or plant in alternating strips and mow the none planted...it's late for corn but remember my TC farms feed corn?....now 10-11 a 50# bag but it grew...fed critters and helped break the weed cycle...with little round up and little fertilizer...because first time corn plantings don't need a lot...just liming my case....also the buckwheat I plant....pulls up nutrients not ph sensative...it will grow in lower ...breaks weed cycle with out round up and deer love it....turkey love it....inexpensive...and great for bee hives....winter rye or wheat first time planting doesn't need a lot of fertalizer...and plowed under adds to your soils and breaks weed cycle.......lay a good foundation and the following year will be not as expensive...invest in lime and diesel for mowing/spraying/discing..........try planting edges where stands may be and leave the large open center mowed...just lime ...but you'll need to mow often enough to keep the vegetation from going to seed with out mowing too short...letting it grow high enough in the fall to hide just the body of a bedded deer....you'll be surprised how many deer you'll see feeding and bedding late afternoon / early morning Let the Brother in-law know that by not messing with planting the entire field at once...your not leaving a baron desert for several weeks...spray down time to working field to plant growth.... One final thought...there are land wars going on around our general area....so if you have a farmer in the area...dairy farms need places to grow and deposit the "pond" waste...so hit the local eatery's early morning and get a conversation going...or just plain knock on doors and ask...it would mean a contract for a few years but they are doing the work putting forth the money and owner is getting $$$ towards taxes...just some thoughts...24 acres may seem small but with land being scarce it may be worth it to a local grower.....Just some things to think over....
  21. Doc...I can see the point of your ? ...they can be expensive...and well you know me I'm nothing if not thrifty...lol so ALL my plots start out with a goal different then just bringing deer in...property has to be maintained yearly or in no time you can have an over grown jungle on your hands....with us managing for timber....I want to keep logging trails open and manageable between cuts...I also have many knee...leg and ankle injuries ...but refuse not to hike so I need smoother trails as I age..the bigger areas ... well every property needs to have some open land...ours had been plowed and never disced...not good on equipment so why not feed the critters while smoothing the fields?...So as I look over my 2 miles of trails and woodland openings...little shooting houses and brushed in hide a ways...I'm thinking long term....kids that may get married and have the the weddings here...I picture hooking up a wagon and taking the grands kids...some day if they have any...on hay rides through the woods...or them playing hide and seek or army...cow boys.girls...what ever...just taking the dogs on walks with MrB......So since these things need yearly work to keep them from becoming over grown....why not extend my hobbies of planting things and experimenting with "that won't grow here" stuff...to increase my enjoyment during hunting Now when I explain it to Mr B like that....Think it takes the sting out of his back pocket?
  22. Well It started raining at 11pm last night and we are having a gentle rain ever since and due the rest of today....good thing because no rain in sight after Friday for at least a week...but you all know how that can change...lol
  23. Yes you do...and the guy that I bought the Quail haven beans from ...also added 1 oz of other seed to the bags...so there may also be Kanaf and sweet sorghum in the mix...because I had left over seed that was inoculated I decided to forgo the upper alfalfa field...perhaps plant it in the fall and planted the area with the hemp/bean mix....that way I can experiment with cutting it ...because the hemp can grow in low PH soils...I'm planting the rest later in the goat pasture....If I ever get that bush hogged and sprayed...lol
