  1. I don't use a lot of decoys but the best I have is the Bobbin head feeding hen...her head and body moves in a light breeze....and doesn't spook the other birds...as for breeding hens what i do is take one of my alert hens and a Jake...take a broken arrow and cut it so when you put it in the ground the hen looks like she's in a squatting breeding position and I position...the jake just off the side and behind her......Setting that up with the feeding hen a few yards away works pretty good for me....good luck and have fun
  2. I love the stuff and so do the deer and turkey here...good luck
  3. I'd agree on that for the ppl that really can't call but ie...someone on this forum mentioned calling in an older hunter ...and I've called in several hunters over the years...usually then I'm seeing their back sides once I let them know I'm there...and several times had guys come in and go after the Toms I have answering me...I'd bet money several have had that happen to them as well...But that was not a dig at you just a simple question as to run and gun....Road warriors down at camp are what scare me...several have stopped and gotten out of there trucks to come in to my calling...It got so bad I built a blind near the road. to avoid getting shot...when they slow down...... I say keep moving or cough...usually I then hear "Oh sh-T! and they speed off...lol
  4. Well said... Now we're on the subject....I hear the "run and gun" phrase all the time...different forums...states...I can see it in vast state forests but don't most ppl hunt the small sectioned wood lots a farms around the state? and with every thing posted up tight...how much "running" can you do?...Then besides being dangerous....isn't ...hhhmm.... lack of a better term...Rude to other turkey hunters?
  5. That's too bad....thank God it was only deer...I lived in Piffard and that road is a death trap to live near and drive on...and the strange thing is ...it's pretty straight! super glad no one was hurt...I was several car lengths behind a van that hit a deer...I thought what I was seeing was a piece of card board flying through the air...it was going end over end and just missed the car in front of me...we all pulled over...and there it was on the side of the road...a doe!!... she was positioned like she was just laying there sitting up taking in the view...the guy in front of me and I both got out and approached her....she stood up and hopped over the guard rail and walked away...He looked at me and said what the hell?!...I shrugged and we both got in are cars a left...lol
  6. Well Eddie you gotta get down here with your son and chase some birds! OK ...this is crazy you and I..... I am sure have met some place...really? you worked at Kelly bros!.. who living in the Dansville area didn't? That or Rapid Grow...I use to shovel her drive......We've been following each other around the county all these years...lol
  7. Whooo been there done that...just makes the " getting er done!" that much sweeter...Best of luck!
  8. sweet no other turkey hunters int he area and farms all around...can't wait!!
  9. That's a great looking product.....nasty pics....Yeeeooowww...why I buy new arrows every year....
  10. Congrats!...you can't beat that for the memory books and a nice bird!
  11. When doing the shrubs and grapes put them in a semi shaded area that you don't plan on disturbing ...I've used both sand and very moist peat ...or you can make a tiny cut under a bud and pin the grape vine or shrub branch to the ground and cover in a light soil/peat mound...cant let either way dry out...you get faster results with second method...once roots develop...cut from main plant and plant with surrounding soil to spot you want
  12. So I get to my spot....just off a gully with running water and not far from a plowed field on neighbors land...set up against a massive red oak facing away from fields to catch anything coming up through our woods heading for the gully and field...I have a Jake over a squatting hen..Alright...then a flash catches my eye...and there is a guy across the gully right on the edge of the field 200yrds away...OK...then my woods light up and I look around the oak and there's a guy up in the farmers field with a LED spot light scanning my woods and the tree tops...Freaking great!!! who the hell does that?...So I let out a cough and now he's shining in my direction....it's actually light enough for me to see he's in full camo with a turkey vest on....light goes out and in a little bit I see movement ..turn to see he's walking the fields edge headed for the other hunter...all goes quiet and it's now light enough to do a fly down and cackle with the wing I brought....I hear.... a long the ridge on neighbors property cuts and cackles and think it's the hunters but then 200yrds away to my left front...behind the area the huinters are in..... I see blk movement...so I'm intently watching to see where they go....No where..... 3 birds and in one tiny patch of woods those three scratch and chase each other and scratch for 45min!!...I did some calls and not even a head popped up...then they all turned tail and fly down onto our place...I waited to see a hunter come through....but hour later...I see a guy walking the field edge headed for the next road over...later heard the truck leave...45 min in an area the size of my dinning room table ...well then ole ma nature reared her ugly head...so... home I am ...but heading back out for the 9:30 group
  13. Get that taken care of...you got a future hunter itching to go out
  14. Have you tried finding where they roost? then go in real early and set up...here they usually will fly down to the nearest water in the morning then walk back up hill...I'll be up at 3:45 and out the door by 4:15am and set up by 4:45...Stay quiet until I hear them tree call or fly down...Then the calls are very soft and short with rather long pauses in between...while I'm listening for scratching or feather fluffing...hens here have not been calling...they do cluck a bit and purr some but not yelping...they have a sort of soft whistle that they've been using....even a spit drum is good if you have others around you yelping and cutting a lot ....try sounds no one else is doing...good luck I'm off to bed
  15. Hhhmmm maybe I need a little more time for you guys to get out there...good luck
  16. Been hunting birds a long time...usually the hens are out and about real early , then come 9-10 they disappear...and some times...the guys are out about looking around...usually Jakes for me...but this year the hens are showing up at 9:30 and single hens meander around the woods in and out until 11a.m eating...stopping to preen them selves...just fluffing up and sitting around watching the woods...and not a peep out of them?!...The camp next doors previous owners were in the turkey federation...had wanted/reward signs up and planted a grass and wild oats...that have since filled in on our place...the hens are eating the seed heads of the grass/grain?...I'll have to get pics...not sure what it is..but this seems unusual to me...
  17. That's a plan Bubba...I just got in we had a hell of a storm last night...sure many of you got that one WOW...I actually thought the birds might be vocal like on opening morning after that storm...not one single peep...I did manage to call in several single hens over the course of 4hrs and one red fox ...not a peep out of them either...also had two buck come in this a.m....would have been in gun not bow range And because of being late forgot the cam...but 3yrs and found out I have video on my phone!!...I'm such a Techy...lol...so got video of one hen....hhmm now how to get it out of phone to PC ....GOOD LUCK
  18. Wow...what a wonderful little one you have there...Congrats
  19. Congrats to everyone!...I went out this morning for just a little while...My thermacell usually works on the no see-ums and blk flys...not today!!...Of course left cam at home because I went to an open blind and they called for rain...never came ...So it's getting light and a doe and yearling appear in front of me...I'm in one of the very long brush blinds and I closed the end with a jake blind...the yearling walks over...into the blind and sticks her head over the jake blind...lol....I'm trying not to laugh and blink..her wet blk nose is 3ft from my face...thermacell is smoking and then it dawns on her somethings not right...so she backs out...then comes back 2x's and finally walks away...then Mom comes over the other end of blind and does that Oh I'm feeding ....gotcha! head pops up thing...6 times...stands there for a bit and she walks away...Damn weather men...could have had that video I heard gobbling from area I hunted opening day...then up on the ridge in front of me ..but he walked the other way into gully..didn't see a single hen...then 4 Jakes came in quiet and there wasn't 8ins. between them and that's how they fed in a clover patch 40 yrds away....looked like one big body with four heads bopping around...they left and I just couldn't handle it any more....must have had a bad pad in the thermacell..but put it in just before I left looks like the last snow storm knocked out the mosquitoes though...not a one....No bird but great morning...scent away is great!
  20. Thank you...as I said not my best...I need lots of water when I call or hard candies...throat gets very dry....I raised a bunch of bronze turkeys years ago...I would stand out side the pen and listen...then mimic...it took a bit but I would call out of sight from them until they would answer...then during bow season I started paying a lot of attention to the flocks of hens in the area...not much else to do...I can do a mean snort weeze and yote call as well....wild birds make some unusual vocals....
  21. When our daughter was young she wanted to date an older boy...Well being a Mom one needs to tred carefully as to not turn out a rebellious teen...so I said well I'll give you a chance...I need to meet him...no car dates...... I drive if he's willing to do that we'll talk...Ohhh but he was a cocky son of a gun...sure...next she's wanting to know what I'll be asking...well do you smoke?...drink?...do drugs?...and have sex?...OMG you can't ask that!!...Your choice....she comes back with a meet time...Ohh but he was just full of him self...So we are at a local pizza place....she was on pins and needles...I ask the questions...and on the sex one he said yes but only once...I came out of my chair and leaned over the table pointing my figure...in a low voice I said See her...my daughter...if you EVER want to have sex 2x's you'll never lay a hand on her....I bow hunt and you will never hear or see it before you hit the ground!...under stand? They went on 2 dates...I think to save his pride....she declared him a jerk and that was the end of I want to date an older boy....when she got older she.... a junior..... him a freshman in college she turned him down a few times She still tells her friends of the day Mom embarrassed her in the pizza parlor...then says....but she was right....
  22. Your turkeys crop to see what they are eating? Mine didn't have much...a few blk beetles..green matter...and what looked like bark?... I'm expecting to see baby grass hoppers...if our latest snow storm didn't kill them...we get a huge hatch of them every year...the ground looks like it's moving away from you when you walk the leafs...but they hatched early this year....
  23. Ya.. that was the opps...lol As for calling...I use my natural voice and slate with strikes I make...the first time I used the new cam I stuck it in my pocket and went out to spray plots a couple of weeks ago...heard a gooble and ducked into a natural ground blind....I didn't know the camera was on..and I decided to Practice a bit and I had a single hen......my calling has always brought hens in don't know why...but they do make for great live decoys...any ways she had a jake follow her in....It was 80 degrees and my throat was dry ..so not my best...heres three snip it's from that..it took a total of 11 mn. for those birds to show...the jake was 4ft away and I turned camera off thinking it wasn't on....lol ...the hen circled around to the open side of blind...I couldn't move being in a bright wht shirt..lol.... http://youtu.be/pzWR4gHJxoA http://youtu.be/fDi4u9lJEkg http://youtu.be/RdN6cIR7pQs
  24. Thanks Paula...giving them a rest...thinking about going to camp and see whats happening down there this week..today is a work day...no rain.. Great day to be out....good luck to everyone
