  1. I've seen some coons dead on the road lately that could pass for cub bears!
  2. Dekes.......... I only have a dozen and a half goose decoys, 12 full body and 6 shells. I figured for this little jaunt 6 would be fine since I didn't know for sure if I could drive in or not. In hind site I could have taken a tractor trailer load as the farm lane was perfect for the job! I have them rigged so I can carry a dozen, six over each shoulder if I have to but its awkward. Its been close to 15 years since I've really hunted geese specifically IIRC. We used to hit them pretty good back when they first started the Nuisance Season all over Niagara County and a little down in Cattaraugus County near Rainbow Lake. After I started dove hunting in PA something had to give as the month of September only afforded just so much free time and the dove were/are more fun than a barrel of monkey's!
  3. Quality man, NOT quantity.........LOL.
  4. I hunted yesterday morning. I missed on the setup as the wind was nil..........I should have remembered that when it is dead calm, they will usually come in from the north east due to the south west prevailing wind. (at least in my experience) The first group came in just outside of shooting range and totaled about 25 birds.........damn. They landed and hung around for a few minutes before Wonder Dog sent them packing. I gave her the green light as I figured any other birds would just land there and present no shot. They flew off and about 10 minutes later about a dozen came in. Bam, bam and bam........nothing. Nice shooting stud. WTH, I was excited. The next group came 10-15 minutes later and to be honest I don't recall how many were in that group. One fell to my second shot. (the first shot was just a warning shot. ) At that point I grabbed a couple more shells and found I had been using my 3" BB and in my bucket I had some 3.5" BB loads. I know, I know.......who needs 3.5" loads ?? Well I emptied the chamber and magazine and reloaded with the Roman Candles!! At least that was the plan!! I moved a bit further down the hedge row to the north to see if I could get a better angle as they came in and it worked. A pair came in and gave me the PERFECT shot opportunity; I pulled up as they were just about to touch down and CLICK. SOB what they frig??? Oh yea, when you reload the gun you should toss one into the chamber too. UGGH! They flared and were never seen again. Word got out to the rest of the resident birds and no more came in. All I saw after that were a couple very distant flocks of geese, some mosquitoes and a ship load of doves. All in all it was another great day to be alive. The weather was stellar and we had a great time Miss Jenny and I. I'll see if I can get a pic or two up from my phone.
  5. Yea, that bacon is too old for me. Smoke it.....................
  6. Sounds good to me. I'll grab some eggs and rye bread, I can be there by 12:30..........................LOL
  7. Good deal! I just called my friend and the geese haven't been back since he saw them. Well actually there was a pair this morning when he got up. No others though...... I'm 95% sure I'll give them a crack before the season closes though. Good luck Jim.
  8. Guts out, hide off and hung in the shade at a minimum. All ASAP. Then depending on the actual temperature in the shade you could leave it for a bit, maybe covered with a sheet to keep flies off then butcher as quick as you can. I like to also stash a big bag of ice in the chest cavity to help speed the cooling process.
  9. Yea, my neighbors tree showed some serious color change yesterday morning.......good deal.
  10. Thanks DH. (as far as limiting out, I'd have to harness up the dog and have her drag some out as lugging 15 out would wipe me out!)
  11. Back in '87 a bunch of guys and myself packed in on horseback about two miles IIRC. We even had a couple horses drag wagons loaded with all the comforts of home. Wall tents, cook stoves, food and booze. 7 guys for 7 days and we NEVER saw a deer! (thats 49 days of hunting and seeing zip) I saw a bear but couldn't get a crack and another guy saw a coyote. That was it..................... Did I mention we had a blast? Oh yea, I just remembered.........on the way out one of the horses got spooked while tied to a road gate. The thing ripped a huge gash into its breast that took 75-100 stitches to close at a nearby vet. That sucked...
  12. I got a call this morning from a friend in Pendleton who informed me that a flock of 80-100 honkers was set up in his rye field. Thats the good news, the bad news is I have obligations morning and evening until Wednesday evening, bummer. I grabbed a Migratory Bird stamp at the PO this afternoon, now I need a HIP number. Cigars are in the truck.............. Hopefully they are still in the area and nobody else gets into them by the time I get there but doubtful. I'll dig out the full body dekes from the loft, dust off the goose call, hunt down some triple B's from the cabinet and grab the SBE. Wait till the dog gets wind of this caper.
  13. I'd be toast.................... Too bad for the death.......Mother Nature has a way of opening eyes of the blind.
  14. I think Dinsdale has a pair of the Monarch binos and I know another friend does too. I liked them and I have Swarovski glass...........FWIW.
  15. That would be subjective. You couldn't give me camo binos............... Camo binos, camo gun, camo clothes, camo undies, camo knife, camo glasses, camo watch, camo lighter, camo ,,,,,,,,,,,
  16. WTH man, we've been waiting for you to get back here. Let the Games begin!
  17. Hang on a second........I popped the back off the camera and have decided to (I know it is a long shot) try and clean up the corrosion and try it again. Worst case scenario I trash 8 MORE batteries. I took a small metal plate off the back of the battery compartment and flipped it over exposing the clean side. I had to Gorilla Glue it back on and am waiting on the glue to dry. I have serious doubts but since the Bills game sucked so bad I had nothing better to do. We'll see..............
  18. I pulled mine and it is chicken chow mien............you want it, you got it. PM me your addy. It was mine 2008 vintage Scoutguard 550. I don't know WTH happened to it. Last weekend I pulled the card and there was nothing on it. I thought it might be the batteries so changed them out, 8 old out 8 new in. When I R&R them I noticed what appeared to be a little moisture on the slide out cover. I thought maybe a little rain worked its way in somehow. Yesterday I wanted to see if I had any pics and lo and behold the card was difficult to get out. It came out but things seemed odd. I untied the camera from the tree and flipped it over and the batteries looked messed up with corrosion. Damn........ Well, upon closer investigation I saw much corrosion up in the base of the camera. I'll snap a pic and show you. The thing is, the power light still came on but there was no pics. Then today I used rubber gloves to pull the batteries and card out and the batteries were 99% dead when checked with a AA Mag Light. Thankfully the SD card is still good!
  19. Congratulations Jennifer, that is quite an accomplishment to add to a resume! I went to your web site and you have some wonderful work there.
  20. Good point bubba. It KILLS me to buy water in a bottle but I'll do it 9/10 time over a pop (that's soda to you downstate geeks ).
  21. My buddy loves them! He cuts them down after a hard freeze and hangs them in his basement. Funny this should come up tonight here.......I was at his place today and saw a huge nest on the side of his purple martin house today, it was gorgeous. I meant to snap a couple pics but forgot, maybe next time I go down.
  22. 14? Holy kielbasa!! WTH..............................................I have a ways to go. I have two international hunts; both to Canada. One hunt for caribou in Quebec and one bear hunt in Saskatchewan. And the latest one was 1997 IIRC! Lots of great information in this thread, you guys know your stuff. Kudos........
  23. It does kind of look like a bat.
