  1. i've grown one out as well, for the first time in my life, but have been trimming it along the way. my cheeks are patching and it itches and i'm not a fan. Right now I'm at a 7. I refuse to shave though because i want to see how caveman looking i can get before i can finally get a haircut.
  2. damn... mine is thursday. haven't talked to my guy though to confirm he's still coming...
  3. I bailed this last weekend. Had I been hearing all sorts of hot birds, that might have motivated me, but I decided to save my energy and get in some points with the wife. Concerning thing for me is that my most active times have always been early season. Oh well, is what it is...
  4. man over the years you've painted a picture of you and your world, and this is the cherry on top. It is exactly what I've known to come and love about you wolc!
  5. spot on. Sometimes those hardcore hunters make me feel guilty, so I'll throw this out to the others as well. Do what makes you happy. If hunting from 5-9 scratches your itch, go for it. If hunting from 8-12 is the only way to get you in the woods, go for it. If you have to, and all costs kill a bird, feel free to roost them the night before and get in the woods at 4 the next day and hunt till noon. It's all what you want out of the experience. Just for the love of god don't beat yourself up if you're not spending every day from 4-12 in the woods. Everyone has a different life situation with family and work. Turkey has always been a fun season for me, and sometimes deer season becomes a chore and a job. Be careful to let neither get that way for you, especially turkey where tag soup isn't exactly an empty winter freezer. hunt on boys.
  6. i think it isn't preferred, but if you can't get out early it sure increases your odds vs on the couch.
  7. a subtle dig there, but it's ok. I take pride in how my home looks. We looked for over 4 months for a country place with land and just couldn't wait any longer with 2 kids, a dog and a pregnant wife living in our temp apartment after we moved back from the south.
  8. i live in the kind of neighborhood I never thought I would, but alas here I am... and I take care of my lawn. The people across the streets... well long story, but kids on drugs, grandparents raising kids, you get the picture. They mow maybe once or twice a year. They don't rake. So we get all their leaves and the dandelion seeds. f'n sucks.
  9. had that yesterday too. about 15 yards. good nobs coming out of his head already
  10. congrats lawd. This scene plays out all the time and sometimes we kick ourselves for it. Great visual though because I can picture the whole thing!
  11. yep, plenty of action after 10 over the years. Not today though. Not too upset it was beautiful out and recharged my soul.
  12. yeah i know that's why i'm inconsistent. I have the primos tool and use it. I also think it's a pressure thing. My mouth and box are just always on point, but i get the best pur and soft yelps from my slate.
  13. My slate calling is either 100% on point or a complete squeaky shit show lol. There is no middle ground for me for some reason. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Well the plan was to get out before sunrise, but I got to bed later than I wanted and didn’t sleep great. I had the 4am mental debate that I know we all go through sometimes. One side of the brain convincing me to suck it up and go and the other providing plenty of reasons why I should go back to bed. I guess I sort of compromised and settled on a late morning hunt. Setup at 8:30 and will hunt till 11. Absolutely beautiful morning and no bugs! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. these 2 comments highlight something that's worth noting. Throughout this thread there have been a few new turkey hunters, others are reporting tons of pressure on state land. Even my old man is going to try turkey for the first time in 65 years of age. Birds don't love pressure. I'm glad we're getting new turkey hunters to be honest, it's a great species to hunt that needs support. But if you're seeing different patterns this year vs years past it might not be any more complicated than new boots on the ground, or old boots being on the ground more often. Edit to say new boots can also apply to hikers, bikers etc out in the woods too.
  16. never used a flapper to imitate a flydown. how often do you find this helps or hurts?
  17. I'm doing my step 2 next week or maybe this weekend if the weather is right. Did step 1 in late March. We're safe to go again.
  18. Call your neighbors too, you might get a group deal. One time at my first house we didn't have much extra cash and there were 3 very visible stumps in the front yard. The neighbor was getting some ground up and the guy from the crew came over and knocked on my door asking if I was interested while he was already there with the crew and equipment. I think we settled on $60 or $100 for 3. 2 were pretty old and rotted, which I imagine makes it much easier. I remember it being reasonable and I was happy and so was he.
  19. Feel the same, nothing wrong with it, but just not why I like to turkey hunt. I like the dance and chess match. I've shot them on flydown and wouldn't hesitate again, but the feeling isn't the same. It's almost like shooting a doe to fill the freezer vs a nice mature buck. But in this case it's only dinner and sandwiches for a week.
  20. coleman makes a great travel tp roll you can find in walmarts camping section. never leave home without it, especially during turkey where i'm walking a lot.
  21. ha. it's very different. but i'll leave it at that so we don't muck up the thread. good luck!
  22. i covered them last night and will have to again in the coming nights. it's nice and sunny now, but COLD. hardening the other plants i have in starters now.
  23. to each his own, but man that's not how i'd hunt.
  24. I thought they were rabbits. Momma has been around for the house for a long time and now that you mention it, I haven’t seen her in a while. I know nature is a cruel bitch, but I hate seeing that loss of life before it really started... and to not to feed another. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
