So you say deer is your number 1...
Five Seasons replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
a lot of us admit to being trophy hunters. The key is to remember most of us horn hunters still eat what we kill. What bothers me is the meat hunter who feels to shame the trophy hunter. We are guilty of shaming the "brown it's down" hunter as well. There is no black and white correct way to harvest deer. It's all based on opportunity, population, time, etc. -

not too bad on a doe... but a rutted up buck? yuck. -
really old man? You're shooting aluminum's?

I would not buy any bow for $200. I would absolutely buy a bow over a ladder stand if those were my options.
-
but you can decide which bedding area to leave alone. Give them a sanctuary. If you're going to hunt beds, I would only recommend it to a very experienced hunter and not a noobie.

you don't have to defend everything. The is wrong in this world. Hunters can be wrong. People will poach. Left media or not, the guy did it, and you have to assume that if the government has a warrant out for his arrest. Guys like this give us all a bad name. This is why people don't like unions. They'll defend even the bad employee. I say good riddance to him for poaching.

it wont happen. too much money behind LEGAL trophy hunting. The poor countries over there don't just cave to liberal flavor of the month stories. It will continue and if asshats like this weren't poaching it wouldn't even be on anyone other than peta's radar.

that's because I'm assuming you've practiced and learned how to scout. One can't simply watch a few tv shows and read a book and drive to public land and shoot a deer day 1. It's not easy for a beginner. It's easier for those with experience. It's all a good reason a lot of us are trophy hunters. Shooting a doe can become almost too easy. a 3.5 year old? whole new ball game. I love the meat, I love the challenge and over all I just love being in the woods. -
social media is tearing this guy apart. trying to ruin his life. I am not going to back up his actions. Poaching is despicable. But there a lot of families fed by his practice and the amount of death threats are astonishing... like somehow violence is the answer to violence. I do wish for him to be punished, but his family and practice had nothing to do with his actions. When you signed up for a job did you ask your boss if he or she might do something in the future that would get your business closed due to public outcry?

2 years ago i'd agree with you about how easy it is just to walk into the woods. Years of private land hunting has spoiled me. I challenge you to head to some of the public land and norther parts of the state and report back. -
spend some money and set up some trail cams. look for pinch points and funnels. and existing runs from the bedding zones to food. STAY THE HELL OUT OF THE BEDS. can't stress that enough. Understand the wind and understand you need them under 30 yards. you can actually modify runs so you can get a good stand in if necessary. the deer will end up using the path of least resistance.

if you're accurate i wouldn't care if you shot standing on your head. Too many times we look at pitchers, jump shooters or QB and judge them by our traditional ideas of form. If you're good, you're good and that's all that matters when you've got a deer at 20 yards.

I live in the burbs of mississippi, but we border quite a bit of land. Similar to NY, our bird numbers have been down. We have a 3 bird limit in the spring but you cannot shoot jakes. Seeing this site this morning made my day.

I'm just going to add that you don't want to just dismiss speed and weight either. If you can pull 60 you should pull 60. A few fps does not matter but it does help. Think of it like golf, it's more important to swing slower and be more accurate, but if you can hammer it, then you're really going places.

$500 fully equipped puts you in the used market. I don't think you can go wrong with really any modern compound, so make sure you get your measurements and check the local shops for trade ins. eBay is actually a decent source too. I will always recommend Matthews because their single cam design is simple and requires little tuning. They are more expensive but even a switchback from 10 years ago is a solid bow.

It's not the end of the world, there are far worse crimes. It does reinforce the need to read the rule book every season. Ignorance won't get you out of a ticket.

Not sure which point you're referring to, but generally you need to live your life. It's too precious and short to do nothing but bitch and be negative all the time.

What... If you're not a political activist you can't be a member here? It's like that now? -
Why no love for the 1911?

Elmo, you and I are pretty cool but that's a stupid a55 comment. Motor vehicle accidents have been declining for decades. Safer cars. Started with seat belts, then air bags, then multiple air bags, crumple zones, now my car brakes for me or beeps if i veer out of my lane. rumble strips, better roads, stricter penalties for distracted and drunk driving. better education of why distracted driving is bad. In response to the topic, i hate to be cynical but death is a part of life. We need to do our best to protect against it, but simply living implies some risk in all that we do. Unless we want to board ourselves up in caves part of going out and taking on the world is to understand that there is risk in all that we do. There is acceptable risk (flying on an airplane) and unacceptable (jumping out of a plane without a parachute). Do your best to manage risk according to your beliefs and hold those in positions of influence accountable and live your life.
