Moog I agree as well about the pressure to push the limits and that it's not limited to just hunters. We see everyday the shop manager bend the EPA or OSHA rules to make a quota. We see wallstreet and banks constantly bending and breaking the rules to earn their bonus or keep their job. We see athletes cheat in sports, people lie on their resumes. It's sad really...

I agree about it being a little silly, but as far as victimless? Certainly worse things are out there, but when someone makes money (not sure how much he has earned over the years) through deception, he has certainly deceived and earned that money undeservedly. Secondly, the impact his family now faces will hurt them. They have probably grown used to a style of living that they no longer can enjoy when the sponsors leave. It'd be better had he not ever gotten "famous" in the first place I would think. I agree. While some of these guys kill big bucks every year it's usually because they're sponsored to travel to ranches across the country and the ranches put them in the best place to help attract more business if the TV guy shoots a nice buck. All that being said, most of us shoot a handful over 130 and up class bucks in our lifetime if we're lucky. Too much success should be fishy. The guy that "gets lucky" and shoots a monster one year shouldn't be questioned as much. But year after year? -
IDK... I think a lot of these guys started somewhere. They were all 14 and nobody at some point learning to hunt on daddy's farm. Now they might not all be ground stalking mountain men, but I'm not sure they're incapable of shooting a deer on an unguided hunt. I will agree that their new found styles are not realistic to what you and I do to get a deer.

I'm not a member on that site, but the whole mystery outing was really poorly handled. If you have something to say come out with it, instead of being all preachy and cryptic. Could have saved 40 pages of useless posts. I will admit to getting confused too. OB, OG etc. lol. -
lol. You're right. I must have been lacking some coffee. Especially considering I own an 835

Concealed Carry USA class for Utah recip. permit
Five Seasons replied to Fletch's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I think I got some bad info the other day and I'm curious. Somone told me you cannot have more than one state permit and I am positive it's bogus... but then the question came up that if you move and leave NY your NY permit is no longer valid. Anyone know? -
and hence why it's a dream!

you contradict yourself. It's a ghost town because nobody is posting... and judge who is hunting by post count... then say post count shows who is talking? I'll just speak for myself. But I work a good 40-50 hours a week. I get 3 weeks of vacation. I use at least 5-7 days during hunting season and hunt the weekends. I get my "deer fix" from bs'ing with you guys during the day. I would say that posting via a smartphone in the tree is the minority. My dad and uncles just started using cell phones. Most of them flip phones haha. These guys have forgot more than I know about hunting.

do yourself a favor and spend just a bit more for the 850 mossberg. Your shoulder will thank you. Especially if you get into shooting turkey with 3.5" mags. But the 500 and the 870 are great starter guns too with multiple barrel choices for shooting just about anything in NYS. You really can't go wrong with any of the 3. Even a good used 870 will save you some money if you're still unsure about the sport. Like golf, you don't go out and buy a set of taylormade irons if you're not sure you're going to like it. check the classifieds for used gear too. camo isn't cheap.

So you're leasing it... so I'd be a little careful with the "I own it" statement. Secondly you're leasing some land that sounds like it was fair game for some time. Meaning, I think you owe a note at least for the hunters to recover their property. It will give you the opportunity to introduce yourself and let them know you mean business. Finally, sounds like you're in for an uphill battle and it stinks your leased land has been hunted (maybe even heavily). I think the dream lease for me is the deer sanctuary that is being hunted by just me and maybe 1 or 2 others for the first time in years! A treasure chest haha.

People with money often seek what's next. Fame and notoriety or power. Celeb or politician... or both. -
agree and disagree. There is not one of us who shoots a deer at night or face starvation. While many of us eat a lot of venison, I think with food stamps and welfare there wouldn't be any of us starving. Considering this, it no longer becomes a necessary survival skill and while I agree that it is one of the most basic skills of mankind. It's no longer require to survive. Therefore, a hobby and a sport.

thanks. I hate being late to a party, but long threads like that make my head hurt. reading the initial accusation got real fishy when the dude just disappeared. Did he ever post again? -
so you are curious if you find it weird... unlike many on this site she hunted a lot? You make some weird statements dude. Who here doesn't hunt a lot? Remember again that number of tags punched has no correlation what so ever to time in woods. I can guarantee my retired father logged more hours in the stand than 99% of this site and didn't fill a tag. His choice. I'll admit to giving her a hard time every now and then... but I never saw anyone be malicious towards her. It is, after all an internet forum. Filled with people of many different walks of life and opinions. We butt heads sure, but at the end of the day I'd sit around the campfire with a cold one with all of you. Differences aside.

second most of what everyone else said. But the best thing you can do is find a friend or relative to assist. It'll save you hours of reading and show watching. Avoid the outdoor channel. It's not realistic. There are some good "deer hunting teaching" dvd's out there. Avoid the "deer hunts" dvd's although they're good for getting a feel.

I found the initial accusation around page 20 something. And can't seem to figure out where any proof ever got posted. That thread is huge. never said that was the only reason. I have stated over and over over the last few years that I enjoy hunting because I love nature. A day in the woods without even seeing a deer is still awesome to me. I do not see it as my duty to manage the herd. I enjoy the hell out of venison. I love a good story and I love drinking some beers with my dad, uncles and cousins in the barn that night. Hunting is so many things to me, but never once has it been about herd management. Sorry. -

No, No, No. This is what greed for the all mighty dollar leads too. Antler obsession is why many of us spend hours and hours in the woods pre-season. Why we turn down a night of drinking to wake at 4. Why we spend thousands of dollars on the sport. Why it's even ruined some marriages. At the end of the day a hunter can be truly proud and smile at night when HE or SHE knows they shot a great buck. That hunter does not sleep or smile the same when they know they are a fraud. I know you're in the sport to fill your freezer and I have nothing against that. But lying about a kill is more of a reflection on the hunter and their values then on the desire to shoot a big buck. Big bucks are shot every year by guys who don't film their hunts, don't send pictures into a magazine or even own a computer. The attention whore comes in all walks of life and that doesn't mean all horn hunters are in it so others will be jealous of them. Most, including myself are in it for the personal accomplishment. I keep all my antlers in the garage on the wall on plaques because I can look at every one of them and remember the hunt. I cannot recall all my doe hunts... mostly because there's not that unique rack on the wall to trigger the memory. -
I still wish this site would require vendors to pay a fee for "free advertising". Many car sites do this well.
-
I think my biggest take away is that it forces us to be skeptical of every big deer. We see it here all the time even. There are some legit nice bucks killed every year. And with every one, it will be questioned.
-
I don't get the cheating in hunting. Never have. I think the quote in my sig explains how I feel. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/whitetail-365/2014/05/another-whitetail-celeb-bites-dust-marc-anthony-accused-faking-kill?src=SOC&dom=fb

sticks not ladders if the tree is straight and you're not going very high they're where it's at. We have a few 30-45 footers where we start with sticks and finish with steps.
-
good choice. I did the same last year for all the reasons you mentioned except i went with the .40 cal.
-
did anyone think it wouldn't be? Honestly I really wouldn't have cared if it was the full season. The first few weeks are fun and I'm glad we have them now, but I take my vacation days after Halloween.
-
i wouldn't do a stand/screw in step project before hunting. That's pre-season work for me. I'd just as well use a climber if I'm trying to sneak in and out. Again, I'd screw in and remove the bottom 2 or 3 if you're trying to keep hunters out. Shouldn't be too much work to screw in on arrival. We usually hide them under a rock near by.

would you be mad if i mad this my avatar? cool pics man. keep em coming.
