  1. I'm sorry, but NY is more than doing it's part in hunter numbers. Some of the other states need to step up their game... Hunter numbers are a non-issue in NYS.
  2. Why is it when an augment comes up about hunting, the first thing stated is we need more hunters? NY has one of the highest, if not the highest hunter density in the united states, why do we keep thinking we need more hunters?
  3. An FFL is not required for a muzzleloader unless they have centerfire barrels available for them like the TC Encore or the CVA Apex. The later two listed would need an FFL transfer.
  4. Interesting... http://www.bowhunter.com/feature_articles/feature_articles_bw_antlers_0409/
  5. Or go broke paying for college to have little Johnny get his liberal arts degree to live in the basement at the end of it without a job...
  6. My parents did the same for me when I was 4, I am now 35 and it was one of the best gifts I could have ever received. I plan on doing the same when the opportunity arises.
  7. The other way I look at this is I now have a paid for contract with the state that many others do as well, this makes it that much harder for the state to take hunting away. In addition you will always have a resident hunting license in NY even if you move away, allowing you to come back and hunt with family.
  8. I would be in favor of a 2 year moratorium on buck take, allowing just antlerless. That would keep population in check while at the same time create many more buck opportunities when the buck season was reopened in 2019...
  9. Grow, to be honest, I can't tell for sure on the first picture if that deer has brows but it doesn't look like it. The 2nd and 3rd picture are of the same deer and that doesn't looks to have brows either and I wouldn't call that tiny sticker an inch. The last pic is of a 2 1/2 YO 8 that would be legal under the new proposal (not mature, but not a 1 1/2 YO). So I guess my point is of the deer you posted only 1 would be killed if in fact there is three deer represented here and that one would be 2 1/2.
  10. But by your own definition you are already allowing someone to tell you what you can or can not shoot. This is altering what the definition of a "legal" buck is.
  11. Not defending the shooter as I totally agree that they needed to identify their target, however the "shed hunter" should receive a trespassing ticket as well assuming that the land was posted.
  12. One major difference with a lot of these other states that are used for comparison is hunter density. NY has one of the highest hunter densities in the country (around 15 hunters per sq mile average). That means much higher pressure on the animals than most of these other places.
  13. Just looked this up and there seems to be a distinction between cats and dog in regard to this (which surprised me). It seems it is acceptable for a hunter to dispatch a cat killing birds, but it must be law enforcement when it comes to dogs and deer. See law below. New York Environmental Conservation Law § 11-0529 1. Any person over the age of twenty-one years possessing a hunting license may, and environmental conservation officers and peace officers, acting pursuant to their special duties, or police officers shall humanely destroy cats at large found hunting or killing any protected wild bird or with a dead bird of any protected species in its possession. 2. Every environmental conservation officer, forest ranger and member of the state police may kill any dog (a) pursuing or killing deer within the Adirondack or Catskill parks, at any time; (b) pursuing or killing any game or wildlife on a state-owned game farm or wildlife refuge; or (c) pursuing or killing any game or wildlife on a state-owned or leased wildlife management area, except a dog being legally used for hunting small game or for dog training. 3. Every park patrolman, park ranger and member of the state police, county police and town police may kill any dog pursuing or killing deer within any state park or state park reservation at any time. 4. At any time (a) any environmental conservation officer, dog warden, forest ranger or member of the state police, anywhere in the state, (b) any member of any town police within the limits of the town of which such member is an officer, (c) any member of the Westchester County Parkway police on any park, parkway or reservation owned or controlled by the county of Westchester or (d) any member of a police force or department of any county, city, town or village in which such member has jurisdiction and is regularly employed may kill any dog pursuing or killing deer and any coyote killing a domestic animal. 5. No action for damages shall lie against any authorized person for the killing of a cat, dog or coyote as provided in this section. - See more at: http://codes.findlaw.com/ny/environmental-conservation-law/env-sect-11-0529.html#sthash.svW2hcel.dpuf I'm not condoning what the individual did, it just peaked my interest into the laws of our state. The dogs should not have been harassing wildlife (if that part of the story was true) however the hunter should have handled it very differently.
  14. One thing that keeps getting brought up is all the rules reducing hunter numbers. One interesting fact that you might want to look into is that NY have one of the highest hunter densities in the country, so I guess I don't really see this as an issue... I'm not for true antler restrictions, however I am totally for letting young bucks walk. I feel like true antler restrictions are tough to make work in all or most situations. As been said in my area the good 1.5 year old bucks have 6-8 points and would be legal to shoot by most restrictions. The problem is those are the bucks you really want to let walk. I don't know that the one buck limit would change a whole lot of things overall either. The shortening of gun season, may have some effect, but that's questionable as well as we see a sharp drop in hunters after the first week anyway. I really think it comes down to educating people, and in some way shape or form getting them to buying in to holding out for older bucks. I have seen a pretty decent change in mentality around my hunting area, with more hunters holding out for older age class bucks (not antler size, but body size) and it has made a marked improvement in the quality of bucks in our area. I also think in light of the recent safety issues while hunting, making people slow down and fully identify the target is a good thing. Maybe the best way to get people to buy into holding out for older bucks is to celebrate the body weight of the deer rather than the antler score? This is the mentality in Maine and some other areas (the big thing is to shoot the heaviest buck) and would potentially accomplish the end goal? I don't have all the answers, or even any of the answers just opinions.
  15. The add isn't accurate. They are not the only 3 1/2" shotgun slug, I have a whole case of 3 1/2" 10 gauge shotgun slugs! They are 1.75 oz., talk about punishment!
  16. That ring looks loose, there should not be that large of gap between the base of the ring and the cap. Also, the gap that does exists should be even from side to side of the ring. You need to move the scope back to where it was mounted (provided it was mounted properly before (unlikely)). The way it sits, the eye relief is likely wrong (or at least is different than it was). In addition it is likely the scope radical in not level with the action anymore (which it should be). My advice would be to move the scope back to it's original location, re-level, tighten the rings, and it won't move again. Once this is done, you need to go back out and verify zero again. The rust color is from the rings (they are steel) the scope tube is aluminum and wont rust.
  17. Personally, I can't shoot a doe with fawns that's just my choice. I did it one time in my earlier years and had a similar experience that has been described with the fawn bleating and not leaving and I felt horrible. I also can't bring myself to shoot fawns, they are so naïve they are not even deer yet in my eyes, in addition you would only get a grocery bag full of meat off of one (not even worth it), and lastly run the chance of shooting a buck fawn (which totally defeats the goals I set for my properties). The last thought I have is I don't buy into the taking a puppy away from it's mother analogy. You are taking the puppy away, I agree but taking it to become part of your family train it, teach it, care for it (big difference). A better puppy analogy would be to shoot the mother dog and let the puppy's roam around in the wilderness. Not trying to change anyone's opinions (cause that's almost impossible), just my feelings on this subject.
  18. And why would I let you hunt? I have no idea who you even are? You can buy it, anything is for sale make me an offer...
  19. Actually I do own a farm, but we don't fence the entire perimeter of every piece of land we own! Like I said they must not own very much land.
  20. So based on this statement, you think that land owners are selfish a$$holes because they bought land, maintain it, pay taxes on it and want to have a place of their own for themselves and their families? Good luck getting permission form people with that kind of attitude...
  21. They must not own very much land if they can fence it all in...
  22. Do not use soap and water with blackhorn, it is a nitro based powder. You would never do that with your centerfire rifle. The text below is right from blackhorns website.
  23. You should use something like Hoppes #9 or similar to clean the fouling and breach plug (it should clean it right out). The only other thing you might be getting is plastic fouling from the sabots, there are specific solvents for cleaning plastic fouling (the same ones used by trap shooters) that you might want to use but that rarely is a problem with the volume of shooting most black powder shooters do.
  24. Blackhorn is nitro based (the same as your centerfire rifles), you use the same cleaner you would use for your centerfire.
