  1. As steve showed or you can use the item in the link below. http://www.cabelas.com/ensemble/Shooting/Black-Powder/Black-Powder-Accessories|/pc/104792580/c/104701680/sc/104218380/Cabelas-CO2-Load-Discharger/4225.uts
  2. We use a lot of ladder stands, for the convenience of getting in and out quiet and quick. We almost always get the taller ones (unless a spot is better suited for a shorter stand due to cover reasons) and ones with fold up seats. With ladder stands it's my opinion that you get what you pay for, that's why we buy the higher end stands.
  3. NFA-ADK, those (2) deer you have pictured are the same buck.
  4. From looking at the picture you provided, it's hard to for sure tell age of the deer especially since this is a late summer photo and coats are much different from hunting time as well. Based on how the legs look and from what you can tell about the neck I would guess this is a younger deer, likely 2.5 but possibly 3.5. As for the antlers, he has nice bases going, but overall mass especially when velvet comes off will be thin. In addition, his main beams don't have a lot of length due to the lack of wrap in the front. When out of velvet, his brows will be very short, likely 1.5-2". Based on all of this, I would guess that deer out of velvet would not make 120", and is more than likely to be in the 115" range. This is a nice young main frame 8 pt, but with the standards you have set for yourself this is not a shooter.
  5. Very true Doc, it doesn't guarantee that you won't argue with your neighbor. One thing is for sure though is that argument won't get your hunting permission taken away like this situation likely will. In the long run I was just being a smart a$$, but there is a lot of truth to it as well. It was all in good fun.
  6. Didn't someone say just a week or two ago about what a bad investment land was? Just think, that poor investment would save you from baking, bribing, working for free, strokin the dog, plowing snow and arguing with your neighbors. Tell me again what a bad investment that hunting land was? lol
  7. I've tried almost every brand of these and the best I've found so far are the Igniter nock. They have their own glue in inserts and are easy to turn off. Others I've tried didn't always light, where a pain to turn off, or flew out when the arrow hit something hard like bone.
  8. I find a lot of the responses to this subject interesting. It seem that a bunch of people feel that purchasing land to hunt is a waste of money or a poor investment that they would never want to do. Just curious, are these the same people that are complaining about not enough hunting access on private land? Are they the same ones that think that people should open up their private land to allow them to hunt, but would never buy land themselves to hunt on? Just interesting...
  9. Personally, if looking for a low recoil deer rifle I would have selected a 7mm-08, or a .243 Winchester. But what do I know.
  10. You could also check out a local gander mountain, they have some pretty good discounts on the remaining optics right now.
  11. This is a great suggestion, I too have been doing this as well as buying from some message board classifieds. As long as you stick with quality companies like leupold and the likes they will warranty their product no matter what so there is really no chance in loosing. You can buy for less than half price with this method, and beat the taxes as well so you save an additional 8%.
  12. Who did you fish with while down there? I've been down a few times and fished with Mike's Marina and always done pretty well. We where there a month ago and caught several Mahi, two white marlin, and a sailfish, it was a great time! Good pics!
  13. It's nice that you post two separate pictures of the same deer, to try and make your point. The first and last picture are the same deer...
  14. I assume you are referring to my post. Look up the geographic center of NYS and that will get close enough for this discussion.
  15. It's personal experience (I wouldn't call it pulling it out of my a$$...) As far as areas, I own two camps in two different parts of the northern zone for which I hunt out of, I own a large tract of land in central NY that I hunt on, my father in law owns 80 acres in southern NY that I hunt on. I don't have property or time to hunt western NY, but I would say I get a pretty good cross section of what is out there in NYS...
  16. I agree, I'm not sure how/where the DEC cuts off for them to say a deer it 2.5 and older, is it 8pts? Personally I would put the BB and deer without 3" antlers in a different age range as the 1.5 YO's, they are really 6 month olds, for the most part.
  17. I can see the merits of the 1 buck rule idea. On the other hand I can see where the guys that buy licenses for all the available hunting impalements would feel they are getting shorted by loosing the other buck tag. Not an easy choice. Then you also have the people that have purchased lifetime licenses for lets say bow, muzzleloader, and regular season with the expectation that they will be able to hunt a buck with those implements, who would not be able to then.
  18. Really?... Let's face it the majority (85-95%) of 4 pt and 6 pt deer that are out there are 1.5 year old deer. There are always the acceptations (we have seen pictures of them), but the large majority are 1.5 years old. Also the 2 pts are by and large all (with less than 1 percent not being) 1.5 year old deer. The grey area of the reporting is the 7,8,9 point deer reported. Just saying...
  19. That would be a good proposal. I'm pretty sure there are other states that do something similar to this.
  20. See that's the mentality I'll never understand. Why would someone choose to shoot that buck with 1.5 inch points, even if they had a DMP? The intent of DMP's is to take female deer to help with population control, not so someone can choose to shoot a micro buck just to say they shot a buck, or because "I'm going to shoot it cause it's legal to". I just don't get it.
  21. You are assuming someone has a Bow/muzzleloader permit. The casual hunter you so often speak of is likely only a regular season hunter...
  22. Grow, I had a wise old man that I once worked with that had a great quote he used to say. "Never argue with the ignorant, they'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience." With that said, I will never try to have a debate with you about AR as you will never change your stance no matter what information is presented to you. If you really truly believe that there are a reasonable number of 4 and 6 point 3.5 year old deer and older out there than I really feel sorry for you...
  23. there's an acceptation to any rule... I wonder if there was such an uproar when they proposed defining a buck as one having an antler that is at least 3" on one side? I mean you know who are they to tell me what I can shoot!?
  24. Moog, I don't disagree with you. Any AR I have seen has exceptions for youth hunters to address this. I feel what Stub is trying to indicate is that established hunters would back out or loose interest and I really don't feel that is the case or of concern.
