BS Anybody can sit in a treestand over bait and kill deer. Get out of the trees and do not use bait and take deer the way a true hunter hunts. I know that you are hunting NJ and it is legal to use bait, but come on please you are not the worlds greatest hunter.

This afternoon the wife and I went to see Lone Survivor and we were not disappointed. It is an action packed 2 hours. It is a inside look at the navy seals and what they do to keep us safe. If you are thinking about going to see it, Stop thinking and do it.

The best hunting car I ever owned was a 1960 red VW Beetle (bug).I was a young pup that didn't know the words (can't do). That little car would take me anywheres I wanted or needed to go. It had a sun roof which made it all the better. At that time in my life I was living on the farm and would drive it through any and all fields without giving it a second thought. What made this little bug go anywheres was the engine in the back.. There was a woods road that I hunted small game in the fall. I would drive to the top of the mountain and park it and go off hunting. When I was done I would drive down the back side that was very steep and had one to two foot drop offs every twenty yards or so all the way down and that car never let me down. When I would go deer hunting I would go up and down any roads and wood roads no matter the weather, rain, snow and or ice , dry or mud could not stop me and that little car. It was better than any four wheel drive that I have owned in the last thirty years. I can tell you that it was the best car in snow. I can remember going up woods roads that had two feet of snow on and never saw a plow . I would drive right up them and park and go off hunting and never worry about getting out. I am talking about going two or three miles off some back roads. When I was done hunting I would look for some place to turn around. That car was small so I didn't need a lot of room ( any kind of small opening). One time my brother and I went deer hunting after an ice storm. We were going up this woods road and a big tree had come down across the road. We were a good mile backin and no place to turn around. We didn't want to backout or walk out. So we had to come up with away to get the car heading back out. We talked it over and as long as we where up there we might as well do our hunt and worry about it when we were ready to head out. The engine was in the back so the front end was real lite. Now we were parked on a icy road that was just a little wider than the car. There was only one way to turn it. Block the front tires and jack the back up and push the front around. If I remember it took us five or six time doing it and then we drove off the mountain. There was one little draw back with that little car or maybe two. One was that it was air cooled and some days the heater took a long time to get warm. The other was that the front was so lite and if there was snow and or ice on the road and going down hill and needed to slow down and make a turn you needed to get the timing just right because if you kept your foot on the break and tried to turn while breaking you would keep on going straight. So when faced with this I had to know when to take my foot off the break and then turn the wheel. Hairy at times but makes for fun driving. To this day I miss that little car and remember it as the best hunting car I owned.

strange and scariest things while hunting or fishing NY
noodle one replied to noodle one's topic in General Chit Chat
Yes , those water snakes can be nasty suckers -
I have had turkeys come out of trees before first light that sounded like they were coming down on my head, but that wasn't bad compare to what happen to me while I was fishing one summer for trout, It was a beautiful afternoon and the birds were singing and the sun was high and not a cloud in the sky. I was working my way down stream though a valley with high mountains on each side when out of no where came the loudous bang that I have ever heard in my life right over my head and it scaried the the day lights out of me like nothing ever had.. When I pulled myself togetter and looked down the valley I saw two trainer jets not 500 feet above the vally floor a half mile down stream and moving fast. I could just see those pilots having a good laugh about how they scaried the s#&t out of me. I had to climb out and sit down for a few min and check my pants and thank God I didn't have a heart attack.

I cleared a small opening out back in my woods this pass fall. It is about a quarter arce in size and has a doz or so oaks through-out. I cleaned the leaves up ( many years of leaves) down to the bare ground. Next I have to clear up what the snow has knocked down, I will do this hopefully this spring after the snow is gone. I want to plant clover in there for the deer, but do not know what is better (red or white) for deer. I know there a lot of acid in the ground from all the years with the leaves and would like to know if anyone has tried planting clover on ground like this and if the clove took and what (red or white) did you use to have deer use it in late summer and fall. Thanks for any and all the help you can give me.

The deer season ended last Tue. so I went out on the back deck and unloaded my gun this morning.I cleaned it up to put it away until spring when I will take it out to put a few rounds through it. I had a load in it since Nov. 17 and when I fired it off it was dead on. It took me one min to load it, but two hour to clean it to put away. All part of the fun.

X2 on the Ruger in compact. A real nice gun and will be a good fit for someone of small frame. I had the 7mm08 and it was a tack driver. I also would look at a 243 as that is a good cal. for deer or bear that she would come across. I have taken deer with both cal. and they do the job as good as a 308 with less kick..

To me the taken of a deer is not all that makes it a good year. I have been very lucky with my deer hunting and have taken more deer than most hunters. To me knowing that I could have taken one and passing on it is more satisfying than the taking the life of one. Being in the woods and seeing deer come by and knowing, is what makes me feel good. Dont get me wrong because I know the deer herd needs to be controlled and hunting them helps the herd. I like most hunters get excited when I see and take a big buck but when I am standing over it makes me sad knowing that he will never be free and walking the woods again. This year has been the worst year that I have had in all of my years of deer hunting, not because I haven't gotten a deer. It is because I have not been seeing any deer. To me seeing and knowing is far more important than taken. This year that I have been calling the worst year is not all true. The first week of season I had a bear twenty yards from me for ten min. and I could have taken him if I had wanted to. I know a lot of people would have given there eye teeth to had been there in my place. I should be happy, but I am not because I am a deer hunter and that is what I go out for to see.

Go buy some toe warmers , good for 6 plus hours and if you can find some you may want to pick up some foot liner socks to wear next to your skin than wool street socks if have them and stick the toe warms to thoses and them heavy wool socks. With that set up your rubber boots should work for you.. A good heavy wool sock if you can find is (smartsock) Good luck and good hunting.

This year was the worst that I can remember for seeing deer. I can't remember the last year that I didn't get buck and most years two bucks ,one with bow and the other with gun. I can't remember the last year that I killed a doe because I didn't need to or want to. In pass years I would be over run with doe. This last week I made up my mind to take a doe and can not find one. I am 70 years old and so that has been alot of years of deer hunting. I had years when I had to hunt hard to take deer, but I always manage to get my buck, not this year I can' even find a doe. The deer are there because there is sign in the wood, but it has to be night time movement because they are not moving during the day and if you push then out they are gone and not coming back. It only takes a few deer to make a lot of tracks so just looking for tracks is not always telling how many deer are out there.Deer sighting is the only way of knowing how many deer are out there. I also look for dropping as a sure sign.A lot of dropping means a lot ot deer. I know that I am not the only one who is having a bad year because I know there are other hunters out looking and not finding deer because there are no shots.

Sorry about that, I stand to be corrected ( 3.65.9 to 3.69.9)

I live in Broome Co. five (5) miles north of NY/PA line. In New York the gas price is between $365.9 to $369.9 a gal.depending on where one buys thier gas. I know that the tax on gasoline is higher in NY than PA. I have gone to PA many times before this week for gas and the price has always been .10 to .12 cents a gal less than NY because of NY taxs and or that is what the gas stations in NY will tell you. For the last week gas in PA has been .25 cents less than NY is getting for a gal of gas.Now I know that NY taxs on gas has not gone up or dropped in PA, So could it be that the oil co. ripping us off or is it the station owners? If someone knows the answer to this ,please let me know? No BS. It is not only one station in PA ,but all of them.

I saw on another hunting site in PA. That some people who have shot bucks have gone up to the down deer only to find one side had come off with the antler on the ground next to the deer. When they took hold of the other antler to drag the deer out the other antler came off. One guy shot a 8 point and the other was a 10 point. There has been reports of others finding the same. One guy said that he had heard that it was happening in NY state also. Has anyone heard of this in your part of the state? I haven't heard of any myself

I just got in from the woods and the wind was blowing every witch way. The only thing I got was cold. Not a thing moved other than me. It was real quiet for TG . I was out there for three and one half hours and heard only five shots all morning and all of them were way off. It's been a hard year so far for hunting. Tomorrow will be a new day and hopefully some movement.

Is it just me or are there fewer road killed deer along the highways and road ways. Back in Oct I saw a few doe dead along the road, that was it. This time of year in pass years I would see one or two everyday or so.. Three out of five would be a buck., this year not one buck let alone a doe. I live in 7S and only ten min away from 40. How are things in your neck of woods?

I don't smoke cigars, but i do smoke cigarettes and have taken many deer while smoking. With bow and or gun. I hunt on the ground , not in a treestand. Just this morning I had a bear come in to 20 yards of me while I was smoking a cigarette. He was feeding down wind from me and never picked me up. After five min he justed walked away.. I have also had deer do this. To a deer and or bear smoke is smoke, be it wood smoke or cigarette smoke or a cigar. As long as you are clean no problem.

I wasn't worried about draging it to far. There is a woods road 30 yards behind me and another a 100 yards down hill below me. Two years ago I shot a big buck in that same spot and worked my way to within 10 yards of it to get it out with my four wheeler.I have permission from the land owner to take my four wheeler in any time I want. If I had shot him and he had dropped there close by all I would need to do is walk out to my truck and drive home (two min away) and come back with my four wheeler. ( All time four wheel drive 400) I know it could do the job because I have carried as many as three deer with it at one time. I just didn't feel I wanted tto shoot him.

Got in to where I wanted to sit this morning at 6;45am . Was there about an hour when I hear something with four leges close by walking my way. I am hoping that it is the buck I have been after for the last three weeks. The last two weeks of bow an this week of gun.I was hoping to see a buck step out when at 20 yards out steps a black bear just walking along. Every now and then putting it head down to pick a acorn up to eat. The bear was so close that I could hear the acorns pop when he bite down on them. I would say he was 150 to 200lbs. a real nice bear. He was around for a good 5 min. and never knew I was there. I had the gun on him the hole time and could shot if I wanted to. I asked myself, why do you want to shoot a bear and told myself to let him go.I sat there for another two hours and never saw a thing. Oh well, maybe the buck tomorrow.

I still would like to hear the whole story. You only tell half of it in your post. What did this guy do to you that is so bad?
-
I'm sorry ,but there is some part of the story left out. The only think I can read in it is jealously on your part. .

You don't need a treestand, stay on the ground ,it is more exciting way of hunting. Learn to work the wind. Learn how to break up your outline. You will learn when and how to move and draw and you will become a better hunter if you put your time in.Then you can call yourself a hunter and not a shooter from a treestand.

I know it is hard to break old habits. The thing you want to do is to let the deer get pass you out to 15 0r 20 yards. It is a low percentage shot when the deer is close to the base of the tree because if you don't hit the spine and break it's back you are going to catch one lung and then it will be a long day finding it, if you don't give enough time to die. The thing you have to tell yourself is the deer has not picked up your scent or it wouldn't be there. When the deer goes pass your stand ,you want to pick out a spot that the deer is going to out from the tree 15 to 20 yards and hold your bow there for the shot. When the deer passes your stand you know that he can not see you pull your bow back . Now you want to pick out a spot were you want the arrow to come out after going through the deer and shoot for the spot on the deer so that it come out where you want it and keep telling yourself that the deer would not be there if it knew you are in the stand and keep telling yourself that you want to see the arrow hit the spot. Another thing you can do that will help is when a deer comes by your stand out of range or one that is in range but you don't want to take pick up your bow and draw and hold as long as you can before letting down. This will help you to learn when to draw and when not to. Be safe and good hunting.

I know that some people go all out to be scent free. I myself shower with scent free soap and use scent free deodorant, I also use baking soda all over my body beIore I dress. I have had deer come to within 5 yards of me and never know I was there. I had a friend who did the same as me plus more to extremeTwo weeks before season he would stop eating all red meat. He would shave all his body hair (head to toes) . The thing is that he never killed any more or bigger deer than me. I would like to know if there anyone on here that goes to extremes to be scent free? Let us hear what you do?

Oh yes, they took my statement that I had to sign with all the whens and hows. Everything went right into the computer. They printed the statement right out and also called it in to find who it belonged to.and if any dealers were missing one.
