  1. i've talk to those in the big game unit within DEC and that's not true. A number of areas that are a real problem when it comes to deer population that would be a reason to implement muzzleloaders into early season, can't. some of those areas are bow only. they'd have a drastic increase in DMPs issued long before considering southern zone early muzzleloader season anyway. Even thoughts about expanding archery season well into September.
  2. i don't have a "brush gun". my thoughts are nothing is really going to save you. heavy flat nosed bullet with some HP behind it would help if even if negligible.
  3. OMG i knew you seemed familiar.... you're Doc Hawkins in the movie "Surviving the Game"!
  4. jacket too thin and not enough push behind the lead. if i'm hard pressed to knock a bowling pin of a table with a round i'm not hunting any north american big game with it. he obviously either doesn't cut up his own deer or just doesn't care about wasted meat.
  5. i have a good relationship with all my neighbors. especially with deer hunting. if i can see it, i'm getting it. I'm calling or swinging by not too long after to let them know i did and what i got exactly. if i can't see it i'm getting a hold of them first. more for coordination of not screwing anyone else's hunt up and common courtesy. that's my situation though.
  6. If I got another sled it'd be a cheaper 550 fan. My tricked out pro-s 800 is almost too much to use. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  7. My thoughts too. My daughter is 3.5 yrs old. Meeting in works to bring nys sled trail system closer to my door. There's something called "toasty tot handle bars" that are cool. If she likes it that much it might be a good investment. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  8. I had an XCR700 triple with triple pipes. I agree not the sled for a 14 yr old. honestly it sucked on gas and was a handful in anything but more open trails. I took it on a bypass highway still under construction and up to Canada on open rail beds. I'm sure its fast. even a little older and level headed if the HP is there you're tempted.
  9. Not good. lol i'd take them somewhere at that point or take them back and bring them somewhere else. expensive though. hoping my walker evans shocks hold up for a while longer.
  10. Around here unless getting up into mountains we've had a thin base on the sled trails. With this last storm Grayson that came up the coast we got some more. Brutal cold and wind. Still made it out though and had a great ride locally. 83 ish mile ride yesterday. anyone else getting out? some areas in NY have better trails and much more snow than here in the hudson valley.
  11. we really only have indoor vegas leagues around me. not many with the space indoors for a good 3d course. I don't anymore with regularity, as i'm doing other stuff now.
  12. we've noticed bucks over the years relocate to the same preferred spots because an area that works for one will probably appeal to another. antler genetics being associated a lot with doe, it won't matter what you do or don't do, if where they're coming from isn't flushing out those genetics somehow. more proof that pulling the trigger to change genetics is a tough to impossible battle to fight. we used to have bucks with no brows often. since other surrounding hunters within miles are doing things differently and probably taking out some of the older doe that may have carried those genes, we now see more bucks with brow tines than not. that's my thoughts anyway.
  13. I know of a handful. they're all vets. I don't like mils. mils don't mix well with MOA that's common with hunting. you use one or the other. I think it's the whole tactical craze that screwed things up but seems there's more and more MOA based reticles on the market versus just mil dot. ....oh yea. yes a couple of them shoot that far and a little farther. one just put an Acculon scope with mil dots on a 6.5 creedmoor and took a doe at idk something like 530 yards.
  14. talking with ECO's for the poaching law that went through, they have to treat each report equally serious, unless they have history with the individual doing the alleged misdeed or have more info to go on. result is a lot of running around on little to nothing chasing a rumors. harsher penalties would deter less brazen from doing it to begin with. then efforts are focused on fewer cases. we've had those individuals caught too. seems it's always bragging in a bar or posting on social media that does them in.
  15. our group had an older gentleman who's pride and joy was a quality deer hunter "course". more like seminars. brought in knowledgeable folks for each portion; gun, bow, etc. off the beaten path location and lack of interest killed it. hoping to resurrect it in the future maybe at a local highschool, especially if they have a local outdoor/sportsmen show. a lot of work and time goes into that stuff though. for some of our smaller local QDM co-ops the landowners made it a requirement.
  16. hold onto anything used during the crime. they have a cellphone on them... fair game.
  17. I've known of poachers that are NY residents to basically do what they please here in NY. They don't take here seriously, but travel to other whitetail destination states to hunt with greater trophy potential. Regardless if they are in possession of a NY license or not, loss of license is huge. most states, including NY, are part of the interstate wildlife violators compact. it'd be felt by a those mentioned, if they couldn't hunt anywhere legally for say 5 years. trust me. those that remain are doing a lot more wrong than poaching. when caught, those get the book thrown at them. it's the casual poacher that's gotten away with a slap on the wrist.
  18. one thing I always thought would be controversial but effective is a vetting process for special hunts aimed at population control. just letting any hunter in there isn't effective but getting ones in there like those two who get the job done will. then it's odd that some hunters on paper don't shoot many deer yet in reality they legally do. For example DMAPS have to be reported but it's just known that it's taken by someone other than the name on the application. I've filled my DMAP legal limit for years and despite they're reported as a group, I think it's not on DEC record that I filled them. I'm sure many others are in the same boat.
  19. not meant to jump all over ya. we're on the entirely the same page with your response. I was just trying to make the point and can't see that 17+" width requirement ever had anything to do with capping the performance of a crossbow in any way, let alone to make it equivalent to a compound. that's all. carry on.
  20. I want a Raven that has too small of an axle to axle.
  21. the restriction is that it has to be a at least a certain width. it can be wider. shorter axle to axle would be less power stroke. so with that in mind the at least 17" width restriction doesn't make sense. I think they were concerned with poaching? idk but in that case a poacher is better served with a 22LR rifle and subsonic ammo. still doesn't make sense. I agree with your thoughts on weight limitations. that said 200lb eliminates a lot of nice recurve crossbows that would still be equivalent to your faster compounds out.
  22. and enough calories to sustain you for days. unless it gives you IBS which leads to dehydration. then your screwed.
  23. honestly, I don't really have an AR's or bust stance. What makes me seem that way is the fact that when "myth" or misunderstood discussion happens around AR's I can't let it go. I give my 2 cents because I feel like more happy pondering thoughts on here than actual experience with them. from the DEC side of things i'd just wish they'd be open to trying things out instead of hiding behind thoughts and surveys and opinions of whomever is loudest. there's enough knowledge and brains in the big game unit of DEC that anything they implement won't be the end deer hunting. most of the time I feel like they get political or public pressure to try something ridiculous because they're a state entity and then get all the blame for it. an inch of antler doesn't mean anything in the scheme of deer management. however, what that inch of antler might represent is another story. the only thing that is nonsense is the concentration of people on here that are all part of the same circle that don't like ARs. another when they say they don't work, yet I know close friends of theirs in the area they hunt use them successfully. it nobodies business on here to open that can of worms though and in the end it would stir the pot and leave minds still unchanged.
  24. why? wouldn't you just sell it on Let Go?
