couldn't resist this 742 BDL for $350
dbHunterNY replied to eagle rider's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
i have a 742 woodsmaster. wonder what the difference is. seems to be just the stock. -
you left out all the more expensive parts and 1 year of jail time! i call it a win but i wished it didn't get watered down. had in there increases for toting a youth along with you to do it, loss of license, and higher fines in the thousands. told it had to be watered down to make any ground. even then the New York Conservation Council was passively against it. My feelings toward them are not warm and fuzzy to keep it G-rated. some consider not all poaching situations equal, however we're talking about the most brazen; jacking and shooting out of season.

Best Gear that Surprised You
dbHunterNY replied to jokeandcolorOutdoors's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
i have many pieces of gear that are always with me during certain parts of the season. ones that have surprised me the most are a few things. started carrying scott naturals flushable wipes since i've become a dad. i use those things in warmer parts of season, after gutting game, cleaning off gear, etc. friggin things come in handy. cheap $5 Lansky folding pocket knives (3"? blade). they're sharp little suckers and i've processed a whole deer with them when needed. they were a limited run and done deal. like a cheap pair of sunglasses i can't seem to lose the things. still have all 3 kicking around with my gear probably a decade later. slogan outdoors ultraflex rifle slings. seemed simple and effective when the owner Curt Hann pitched them to me but i love the things. only sling on all my guns now. some guy is even trying to steal the design and sell a knockoff at the similar price. versatile, made in the USA, and no matter what guarantee. still i have the mag version on my 13+lb varmint rifle and i carry it all over. has just enough give that it doesn't wear you out and beat you up. regular version on my other guns. straps can be split to work like a pack. with your arm it can stretch to fit and brace for off hand shots. not expensive at all. just a "gimmick" i thought i'd try. -

i have one and i will not lie. it's sat on the shelf with other hunting gear for years. i have yet to use it. seems like i really need to. -
Sounds like my situation but I settled you could say and the neighbor got him. As well a new one will replace him best season. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

I usually hate Dicks sporting goods but...
dbHunterNY replied to Buckmaster7600's topic in General Hunting
i wait until after season clearanced out prices. some stuff just gets restocked and never gets priced to move, but some stuff goes on mega clearance. i got new waterproof late season Scentlok parka and pants over 50% last year by the time i was done with coupons and discounts. it really was nice stuff that functioned well and stayed warm and dry in the elements. bought a Browning rifle there on impulse before. never really gotten it there. -
yup light blue tetra gun grease.
-
it's a sky blue color
-
I don't use it for the breech plug as TC had the grease for it. I do use it on every other part and it doesn't work well. never had issues. actually i used normal gun stuff at one time. it rusted a little and the bore butter was the only thing to keep it under control.
-
i think i've used tetra gun grease for a while now and haven't had problems. muzzleloader has sat for a few seasons. i check it but haven't pulled the plug. i think i'll do that tonight. tagged out through regular season so ML might be more opportunity to hunt if i have time.
-
i know black limbs matter but i'd be a sucker for a brown black widow. black leather wrap grip but not sure recurves come with that option.
-
...your own fault you don't market your services as excepting Black Widow bows as collateral for final payment. surely some dude with multiple widow bows would be on the wrong end of your services. i know i would be!

Why it’s high time to make peace with crossbow hunting
dbHunterNY replied to tughillmcd's topic in CrossBow Hunting
i'll throw this out there. this year on the family farm alone 3 hunters who hunted solely with a gun picked up a crossbow and hunted the archery season. one of them was a youth hunter. several years down the road there's more than likely 2 more future youth hunters that will use a crossbow, as they said they will. all just starting out with a crossbow but have practiced with it throughout the off season have set their range shorter than my wheel house with any of my compounds. i don't own a crossbow of my own. i'm a spry 34 yr old grown up farm boy that on any given day can draw an 80lb compound without struggle. a few years ago i think it's been, i got in an auto accident (not at fault). i couldn't pull back my wife's bow to save my life that was set at 40 lbs. i sat and watched a perfectly patterned trophy buck on trail cam week after week, because shit happens and i couldn't hunt with a crossbow. i couldn't get a doctors note and suddenly make things okay for more reasons than i realized. for anyone who's arguing that a crossgun is not archery equipment. I ask you this: i give you $100 for one and only one chance to walk into a shop to put the $ down on a new crossbow and only a crossbow. then i put you in front of a gun shop and an archery, which is the only one you'd chose would you walk into to buy a crossbow? honestly, i just want to be able to hunt with a Ravin crossbow and i'd call that a win. i wouldn't hunt or kill anything any different than with any other crossbow. saying i can't use that versus using a NY compliant crossbow is no different than saying i'm an a**&^%$ and should not be able to hunt with an AR10 "assault rifle" chambered in 308. good thing i've got my grandpa's Remington Model 742 Woodsmaster deer rifle to use so i don't tarnish my reputation. -

it will be the punishment along with more money if the governor signs the bill A556 that passed both senate and assembly this year. -
i've seen deer this past weekend on private land in all of the above. i shot my buck coming from an overgrown field into an ag field though.
-
had a 2.5 yr old buck taken on the co-op last year that had shed it's antlers. hunter thought it was a big doe. that was the 2nd weekend in December though. stress or injury can make them shed early. don't know if you process your own, but was it injured at all?

Question about 2 hills, and how the scent travel affects deer travel

i was thinking the same as you. figured it a bit steeper grade. -
Question about 2 hills, and how the scent travel affects deer travel
dbHunterNY replied to Bionic's topic in Deer Hunting
yea that concept is very common for bedding locations. opposite for bucks or deer cruising looking for deer. more discussed is the idea of a buck using that to those thick low lying pockets of cover for hot doe without actually traveling down into them. -
17 years ago with a hay day for deer population. it has since gone down a little. still a plenty of deer though. on less than 200 acres you can burn out spots and doe family groups have you figured out. what have the neighbors done? if you don't know then there's no point in talking and you should instead find out. maybe they're shooting more deer or maybe they're logging and doing things to pull deer to them more than in the past. maybe there's less pressure there before than in the past, so the deer chill out while waiting for you to leave? could be a lot of things. we started practicing QDM years ago and it's gotten better ever since. barely scratched the surface of habitat stuff yet, so there's still room for improvement.

Why it’s high time to make peace with crossbow hunting
dbHunterNY replied to tughillmcd's topic in CrossBow Hunting
i honestly don't think it will. many successful bowhunters will just get it done with a crossbow instead of a vertical bow. not much change usually happens with anything having to do with archery season. crossbows are being used right now during the best part of bow season. so i don't expanding on that will have a significant effect. i think the bigger ridiculousness is saying you can't use some crossbows because they're not big enough. vertical bow industry has gone to lighter and more compact bows. crossbow industry is doing the same, yet we're not allowed to use it. it doesn't make sense. the bigger bulkier crossbows are over 10 lbs with accessories added. as a gun hunter would you want to be restricted to only hunting with a outfitted gun over 10 lbs? that just sucks with no good reasoning. -
Question about 2 hills, and how the scent travel affects deer travel
dbHunterNY replied to Bionic's topic in Deer Hunting
i'm not moog but i would bet money deer use both sides. left is west on sketch then i'd say hunting the left face with a west wind isn't the best versus the right bank. wind will ride over the top of it and under that wind air will be rolling back in toward the left face. air currents will hit the far (right) face and disperse in different ways but you can figure out how by testing it and working down from the top. if causes deer cross the valley at say a saddle on each side then you could hunt deer moving that way from downwind in the middle if wind is north or south and strong enough. -
look into Slogan outdoors ultraflex slings. made in USA and guaranteed no matter what. doesn't hold any scent, more grip than the claw, and you can on the fly use it in pack mode or as support for off hand shooting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVNKLidVG6Y&list=PLgN7pEva2mk-q48jbprqaFAwh7cn-IWkl check out this video. whole thing but don't miss stuff once it's at 1 minute in. slogan ultraflex is the original .... "ultimate sling" is a knock off that doesn't really cost any less.
