WNY Bowhunter's 2014 Shed Journal:
dbHunterNY replied to WNY Bowhunter's topic in Member Hunting Journals
I've only ever found one shed. don't specifically shed hunt a lot but yea. I've found dead heads multiple times. -
depends on how you make it i suppose. i use ground venison to make mine.
-
i don't even know if the 500 ft rule applies when inside your residence. not sure.

SAFE Act is more important by far, but life never gives us one thing to deal with at a time. Hopefully it's a catalyst for more hunter involvement in politics that effects them.
-
yea same here.... i said yes but wish i could clarify more.

i always hand wash my knives and dry them right after. we've got JA Henkels knives in a block i even do they go right back in the block they came with. my boning knives i just bought I'm keeping in the plastic packaging they came with. it snaps back together to hold the handle and isolate/protect the blade enough.

I just use a Rhinehart Rhino block. at any range it can stop anything I've shot it with, even crossbows. haven't had an arrow even poke out the other side yet. that's with shooting in the same spots on the target or my 70lb Evo at 345fps.

I think i'll start next door at the club Jan 7th. that's a once a week league. then into summer i'll switch over to 3D. I've practiced down in my basement at only 10 yards. I figured if I could keep them in the same hole though I'd do alright out around 20 yards on an actual range. I try to elevate the target though so I'm not just developing form that's aiming down at an angle.

Last day of my first season and buck jumps string
dbHunterNY replied to LiveFree1776's topic in Bow Hunting
lot that goes into whether or not to aim even lower or when to shoot. I use and tell others what WNYBuckHunter said all the time though. Probably the best advice to give without getting into things too detailed and making things unclear. -
Done it with rifle and muzzleloader under certain conditions but never with a bow and arrow. I wouldn't even if it was "hiding" looking right at me, with its head dead still. so... NO

yea it's important to have on your person in case you can't get back up in the stand. serious stuff

A little perplexed (deer processing timing)
dbHunterNY replied to BUCKANDAQUARTER's topic in Deer Hunting
I don't have any experience with butchers. I do my own. you really don't age a deer carcass between 36-38 degrees for more than 2-3 days. if it's frozen solid that's another thing and you can procrastinate longer. probably busy with other things like the others have said. -
Public Land in Albany and Rensselaer Counties???
dbHunterNY replied to 518BowSlayer's topic in Deer Hunting
Pittstown and Tibbits suck. I know because I live there. Grafton is ok but not great. better land north in Washington county or east toward the border. Rensselaer county has a piss poor attitude when it comes to getting away from the "I got my legal deer". -
the leather with some honing compound would finish to a nice edge and get the microscopic ribbon burr off. tough to keep them kind of edge though.

so I tested them out cutting up two deer (close to 120 pounds of very clean meat). boned them out and used the knives for prepping and cleaning the different cuts for packaging. the Dexter Russell softgrip knives seemed to work very well. I always keep a small tub of slightly soapy water to wash them after a little while. i keep a cheap carbide/ceramic "v" sharpener from Smith's in it. sharpen the knife in the soapy water with the ceramic does a darn good job. I found I could bone out a whole deer without too much need for sharpening, this was brand new from the package. only the one flexible knife was used. they both were about razor sharp out of the package. I could hold a sheet of paper in front of me and slice sections cleanly off horizontally until I was at the end of the sheet with only a strip left. once I got to prepping the cuts for packaging I noticed it helped to touch them up a few times. that was more toward the end when cutting through silver skin and fiber like muscle tissues to make strips for the grinder. when you're trimming around that stuff, cutting only meat they don't dull that quick at all I think. for $19 each i think they sharpen well and hold an edge long enough for the money and not to be a burden. I'd recommend them or buy them again.

practice drawing on deer at least I'd say. you'll come across that shot opportunity to let an arrow fly. don't rush it but realize that perfect shots won't present themselves every time. at times you can stop the deer or see opportunities better. when in doubt don't shoot though, just like you've been doing. picking your right shot opportunity will come with time.

yea I don't know either. I do mostly agree with the poster in that most of the time I try to have an arrow knocked in case the D-loop gives out or the release fails. This is mostly when working on them at my shop at home. I've never had it happen to me but have heard and seen it happen to others. I doubt the poster draws, nocked and loaded at his/her HD flat screen TV or worst of all a person. I'd rather ruin an arrow stuck into my work bench or ding my concrete basement wall then my expensive bows. I saw a Mathews Monster ruin a string, bend cam, and mess up axles and bearings all in one dry fire. that's an expensive fix. I haven't ever heard of the idea manufacturers dry fire every bow. the Hoyt 1500 dry fire limb claim is them testing. those bows wouldn't be sent out though. also just about everything else was replaced during that effort except for the limbs. I've seen several bows take a dry fire and turn out fine with no issues. that said I wouldn't want it to happen to any of mine I've got now.

I started with a Winchester model 64 30-30 for deer and 20ga shotgun for everything else. a good recoil pad on the end of the butt stock makes a big difference. as does the overall design. I've got a Benelli 12ga that with target loads recoils even less than my 20ga with general purpose high-velocity shotshells.

Anyone having any luck with fall turkey?
dbHunterNY replied to Uncle Nicky's topic in Turkey Hunting
didn't pursue them this fall... didn't have a flock really around much either. congrats on the birds everyone! -
I would've and could've filled it out. didn't get one though. funny how you can't really fill it out as you were not hunting for turkey. it basically is structured around you having a turkey license, which you do not have. I'd mailed it back. with a separate piece of paper saying you didn't have a permit and didn't hunt them. if you really want to go out of your way list sightings.

I'd shoot mini-mags or ammo closer to 1200 feet per second or more. my dad has a Ruger Mark II that doesn't like standard velocity ammo as much. My Ruger Mark III will eat pretty much anything.

Permit application question....
dbHunterNY replied to firehunter48's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I got mine from Rensselear county but I'd think it'd have zero impact as well. unless you've had a past experience where you feel unsafe with the condition you're. even then it would just maybe give you an advantage of getting a CCW permit right off the bat, without a restriction to target and hunting only.
