  1. After 12 years of chasin coons through the swamps of St Lawrence Cty and the 2 or 3 times a year chasing of yotes on our 700 acres here at home, i know all about the running of hounds. It seems..Fair Chase is seen in different ways, in different light by so many different people its kinda funny. Now when snowmobiles are thrown in the mix on those..Fair Chase..yote runs that really raises the bar. I have yet to see a yote out run a "Cat" in open field fair chase runs. But as long as those big brown eyed, long eyelashed deer are not involved..Its all good with most!!
  2. One would have to wonder if this is the outcome of Bambi down south when they are running them with dog's?
  3. Are you sure it still against the law? Ya its in the book but the action all took place after the book was out. It seems to be a grey area. That following the law thing is a good one though. Thats a whole new thread of its own.
  4. How about you mind your affair's and the rest of us will do the same. If sitting back and watching is your thing then so be it. I will take care of my area thanks!
  5. No point...Just facts. That some of us will realize and do something about!
  6. Post off of another website, #67 Today, 07:53 PM Join Date: Jan 2013 Location: Tug Hill New York zone 4 Posts: 912 My dad talked to his neighbor yesterday. She said a small deer crossed the road and was standing in the 5' snow bank. She thought nothing of it. A couple hours later she looked and it was still in the same spot only dead. It was a fawn and apparently the snow bank was the last straw. It died standing up in the snow bank.
  7. In some places im sure there are 365 days, wide open on anything that can kill a fawn! I'm pretty sure of a couple. When mature bear kills out number mature deer kills on property that has been in the same hands for years, always have had great deer herds with very few bear sightings and now be hard pressed to find fawns in summer even while putting up hay. Something needs to be done. It Is!
  8. Drive 150 miles closer to me and see how winter is treating us. I guess we could talk snow mgmt like deer mgmt. Cant balance either the same way in two different parts of the state. Where we used to get a dusting of snow up here 2 or 3 times a week is now a dusting of 4 to 6 inches 2 or 3 times a week. We had all that ice up here and then all the snow on top of that. In most area's they are not pawing to get to the ground through the ice layer. You can see where they try. Paw down a spot untill they hit the crust and then give up. There is no doubt there will be die off but i think this warm up thats coming may be a saving grace to some.
  9. When they leave their yards and you start seeing them in the streets and where they have not been most of the winter they are starting to have to search for food. Now untill spring will be the live or die time for many. Some like in Paula's friends area will stay in the yard and search untill they die and others will head out looking for anything. Lets hope this warm up thats coming stays with us for awhile. Mid winter thaw would help in a huge way!
  10. Glad you got what you were looking for. Happy,Happy,Happy..Just like the herd!
  11. Many animals love alfalfa. I do my best to keep them darn deer out of it.
  12. Although it would be better to use the chainsaw more and hay less, They will do just fine on alfalfa hay. Their stomach acid has already changed to winter mode and they will break down the woody stems of the alfalfa just like a twig. Now a solid bale of Red Clover would cause more harm. Have been using alfalfa hay for years on both sides of the fence with no problem. Slow is the key word, more so this late in the year. Its to deep of snow to worry about any piles. Just drop some trees in the area that they are wintering in and if they can reach it. They Will. You can deal with the tree and make rabbit piles when the snow melts!
  13. Not so sure that deer running away uo in the right hand corner is the same deer out near the blast. That deer may have been behind the pile and that deer out on the blast is now stew meat!
  14. Alfalfa, clover bales do wonders starting out. A couple deer blocks will make them work for a bite or two and they cant stand there and fill their bellies to fast. Get the chainsaw out and drop a few older tree tops for them to get to. This late in the season you want to start them out slow. We are talkig feeding all the wildlife right? As you know its against the law to feed wild deer. lol Turkeys like to pick around in that stuff also. Good luck feeding all your wildlife and try to keep the deer out of it because you would not want to break any laws!! lol
  15. I have a Mossy in 20 Gauge and she will cut holes in paper with Hornady sst shells. I choose that over my Wby 300 Mag many times a year.
  16. Have to figure out a way for them hounds to read the posted signs first! I have been on other sites and have heard the horror stories from the guys down south where the dogs run deer on every property the deer run on. Have heard alot of the sss stories where the owner only finds a gps collar in the woods. Fair game for some!!
  17. If you are going to hunt small and big game and only one gun can be pushed into the budget then i would say a nice 12 or 20 gauge combo with a riffled barrel and scope for deer. That will get the job done for a year or two before you can pick up a nice rifle.
  18. Yeah with his fingers in his mouth and his pants at his ankles!!!!!
  19. A doe bred in March and gave birth 180- 200 days latter may have a fawn but a fawn still on the moms nipple in Oct,Nov has a very slim chance at making it. I do not believe mother nature would let a northern doe comes thru her cycle in March.
  20. I know with our 700 acres of beans and corn across the road from Ft Drum we get more than our share of bears on us. I know of 5 taken on drum last fall, shot as they came across the road from dining all night and wrecking piles of corn. Looks like a bomb went off when they get done rolling around. Have shot at many's feet to shooo them away from our fences. Dog hunting would never work in this area unless they allowed it on drum.
  21. Welcome to the site. after reading this statement below one would have to wonder what kind of answer you would get from the folks living in those areas... Hunters in camo 50 yards close to kids and pets with stick and string or a trained sharpshooter making head shots over bait piles in the middle of the night without the landowners even knowing they are doing it. I believe the sharpshooters would get the nod from the home owner. Sad but True But if they do, it's a chance I'm willing to take because the population is out of control. It is a lot safer to control the population with bows rather than with sharpshooters and silencers hunting over bait.(Quote)
  22. So do you guy's think that is why the Crossbow will be pushed along. Many think its like a gun so maybe the top dogs feel that way also so there will be no need for guns. We will have the Crossbow/gun and the old stick and string to do our hunting with.
  23. Easy button to get to at the top of the page. Used more on some than other's. Ahh Yes, Bear Management. Shot on sight in these area's.
  24. Really!! Man we are lucky to have your knowledge around here...Thank's Dude! Any other rats of the woods you would like to share with us? Black,Grey,Tree Help us here!
  25. No I can see the color grey very well. Cant wait till those sharpshooters start picking off those freaking wood rats,in the middle of the night, over a corn pile, with a spotlight. You know the ones that keep eating all the rich peoples flowers and shrubs and cause all those car wrecks! Its all about management there!
