Thats the good thing about owning your own land. You can pretty much say what goes on with it.I guess i am one of the lucky ones as all of the guys that hunt on my land has no problem with the rules in place.Either that or they just dont say anything but they keep comin back and they sure have a big smile on their face when they shoot a mature deer.I am not sure about this poll that is here.I dont think anyone should have to hunt to feed their families. If that is the case mabey they should'nt have computers and internet to answer that question. My family likes venison and some fish but its kinda a treat not a matter of eating or not. -

Thats just it.Not all MATURE deer are TROPHY deer.In my world a mature deer is a trophy deer..Buck or doe..I dont think twice about taking a doe or 3 for the freezer.no matter the age as we have plenty every year aqnd they just kep coming. On the other hand i cant say that about mature bucks as everyone knows those fellas like to roam and if they are off our 700 acres then they are fair game. You see qdm is not the same for everyone as you say.A trophy in the word i guess would be something that makes the book.A mature deer is one that has lived and learned for say 3 or 4 years and went nocturnal untill the wrong day and it just happens on that day i did my homework, learned where he was hangin his rack and then went in there and took him.To each there own but at this stage of my life if a deer is not mature(buck or doe) its way to easy. There are those that only hunt 1 or 2 days or only have a couple acres and they shoot anything.Thats ok with me but thats not for me.... -

For me qdm is not a issue of number of points or spread of the deer or even the score. To me the deer needs to be mature. If you let them get to that point all the rest will fall in place.I have taken a 5 yr old and he was only an 8pt.He was barrel chest, huge body and massive neck.He didnt score squat but man was he a site to see.Its all about choice i guess but if anyone out there that has not shot a mature buck, finally does..They will be hooked on qdm. -

Rocket i feel for you and anyone else that hunts in an area today that dont have a huge doe population. We never had that problem.Instead of slamin the way antler hunts and thinks you might want to take a page out of his book and hunt the land that the state allows you to hunt.If you are in an area like it sounds like you are mabey a couple years of qdm is what the area needs to get the balance turned around.Sometimes management works!!! -

Thats why there is twice as many does as there is bucks in the average herd. Its still a choice but why not take a doe instead of a spindly little spike or 4 point.Let him walk and if yur lucky enough to see him next year a harvest him you will feel much better knowing you took a better buck. There are so many does that i dont think the meat thing holds water.A yearling doe will give about as much meat as a yearling buck. -

I dont think its a thing of picking apart a deer from a seasoned hunter.I know for me its a choice. When i started hunting i was balls to the wall shooting anything that was brown.A few years later it was not so much the numbers it was shooting bucks only.Next it was shooting does only and now its pretty much take a doe or two for the family and only bucks that are mature deer with racks that i would put on the wall, not the garage..It all comes with age and the number of deer taken in your life i believe. For me i have more satisfaction looking down at a doe then looking down at a yearling and seeing a skinny neck, thin body and spindly rack. But thats by choice.I sure wouldnt want to be in a position where i had to take game to feed the family,Them days are long gone. -

Bow hunting letchworth on a nice fall day.As you know hikers are one the park also.Iwas on the bottom with a buddy on the west side and caught movement on a nice open point up on the east side.Well a guy and his girl must have got tired or planed a pinic.Well ofcourse i had to watch with binocs every now and then.Well it didnt take long and they were...well.. you can guess what they were doing.I called my buddy on the radio and sure enough he was watchin the show...Well tell me you would'nt have.lol -
Pygmy thats cool that you still have a good relationship with your ex.First she was a wife with benefits and now she is a friend with benefits!!! lol

The only problem i have with a southern zone early oct opener is that it would open the same as the northern zone.....Now do i hunt here and chase some off the bruisers we have runnin around on our 700 acres or do i go down to the farm that borders letchworth state park and hunt one of the prettiest places i have ever seen in the fall....Well....I guess thats not a real bad problem to have... I think that would be great for everybody but when they say primitive does that mean flintlock, loose powder and no scope???If so i hope they make it very well known as im sure someone would say oh i that it was just muzzleloading season!!!!
-
Yup i guess that would explain the blood on his head but man from the pic it sure does look like a bullet hole and blood splatter.I guess mabey he should have been a little closer to the sign.
-
Sure looks like some fresh blood on the ear of that little button buck.Good shot to the shooter. He must have been close to do that. Some people will just do anything i guess.Little guy makes it through winter then someone jacks him!!!

If ar will make those 200 class FREAKS in my neck of the woods bring it on. Restrict me untill i cant be restricted no more. -
It is a small world.I took my first buck out of fish creek back in 1982.Back then the warden was active and his name is larry kring. He was a big help to us back then. The walk in trail was just past the white house on the hill in between the warden and that house. Its a big area and one year i got turned around late in the afternoon. All those ridges look the same way back near the creek.Lucky i found the big field and then knew where i was.We have taken 3 ten pointers out of there that were all 125 in and better.Long walk in the dark and long drag out if you dont use a canoe to get in.I need to get back there some day.

I hear ya and for the most part they stay around thru bow season and the rut but when the bangin starts they will run your a$$ over on their way to the park.Believe it or not i have seen a group of deer heading right at me on their way to the park. They had to cross a road before they got to the park side and there was a car coming. The driver didnt see them till the last second and hit the brakes,All the deer made it but one fawn and that little joker jumped over the hood of that car and zipped its way to safety. We used to ride alot down there also and we used to see hundreds of them in the fields at the castile entrance also. Its amazing how many deer hang out on both ends of that park but i have seen groups of 20 plus on the bottom where we hunt so they are not just on each end of the park.I started hunting down there way back when they were called party permits and you had to have 3 hunters to get one permit.Back then when we were younger it was nothing to see 100 deer a night in the hunting area of the park and we had guys go in with 6 plus boxes of shells on the first morning and come out with no shells and no deer. That was the good old days but now days for me its a mature buck or a doe for me down there. We used to take does off the bottom every year and we would let deer run by us on the way out and not shoot because we could'nt drag any more. Oh how it was nice to be young back then.lol -

There is always a massive amount of deer in the dam area as that is safety zone from the hogsback all the way to the mt morris entrance. You most likely drove by our cornfield on your way down through. We have fields on the highbanks road and one of them butts up against the park.Take one step forward your in our field and take 2 steps backwards and your on the park in the saftey zone. They learn fast when hunting season opens and zoom down they go to the bottom and on the saftey zone. This time of year they winter in the pines to stay out of the weather and they love to hit the corn we leave up for them and they paw the alfalfa pretty hard also. -

Wow thats a heck of a buck...I would have to say thats a heck of a doe that did the shooting also!!!! -
Mine is pretty simple also.Whitetail deer 24 7 365 days a year.We have them in the front yard, back yard and the back forty. There is nothing i can think of that i would rather have for all four seasons.

I leave about 5 acres of corn standing through the winter for the critters and by spring its been well hit...
