  1. Back in the day I killed many of my birds just off the roost. I did a lot of my hunting before work in the morning and my goal was always to be close enough to the roost to work the bird as soon as he flew down. Now that I have retired, my strategy has changed. Rather than crowd the roost and try to kill the bird when he first flies down, I hunt areas where I expect the gobbler to come looking for hens later in the morning, after the flurry of activity that takes place right after flydown. Now I'm killing most of my birds between 9:00 am and noon. I'm spending much less time running all over the woods and much more time sitting in a comfortable chair in a popup blind.
  2. I have to disagree with Shawn. Not only is driving deer and bear legal in NY, but at one time it was the the "standard" method of hunting, at least if the southwestern part of NY. Much of the land was agricultural at that time and landowners would get together parties of 20 or more hunters and drive large areas for deer. In later years, since much of the land has become broken up into smaller parcels for recreational use, driving is not as practical as it once was. Some public lands have specific regulations, but if there is any regulation against driving deer on public land, I am unaware of it. Welcome to the forum and good luck !
  3. I dunno, Real...Shoot one of 'em..They are a lot easier to ID when in your hand.
  4. More likely your mother or your Grandma..
  5. Besides that, if he gets and it does not work, I will refund his money.
  6. A friend of mine was an Austrian National and money was no object to him. He favored Kahles scopes, even over Zeiss and Swaro.
  7. Heck, one of my old girlfriends could GOBBLE with hers and do a pretty good DUCK CALL out the reverse side.. I sure do MISS her..<<sigh>>...
  8. If it says LEUPOLD on it, you won't be disappointed in the performance.
  9. Some oldtimers used to say that a house pet could not be a good hunting dog. More BS passed down through the years ! The absolute best beagle I ever saw was an OBNOXIOUSLY spoiled house pet, but she was a rabbit running machine. Damn seldom did I ever get a rabbit cleaned before she started the next one. The best coonhound my Dad ever had was a yard dawg/housepet. The best lab I ever hunted over was a pizza eating house pet. She was outstanding both on waterfowl and upland birds.
  10. There are few things more enjoyable to me than hunting with a good dog, whether it's a hound, a retriever, or a pointing or flushing bird dog. It adds so much to the hunt. Yesterday a friend and I spent the morning hunting rabbits with his two beagles and had a truly memorable rabbit hunt.
  11. THANKS, Larry !! That my NEW Faulk's crow call hanging on the right side right below the tassel from my high school graduation mortarboard. The 45 RPM record is a recording of M. L. Lynch demonstrating turkey calls on his World Champion Box Call and Jet Slate Call... I got my very first instructions in turkey calling from that record. Unfortunately I no longer have a turntable to play it on <<sigh>>...
  12. They're pretty big boys...I was standing on a bucket..
  13. Had a WONDERFUL last day of rabbit season with my buddy and his two beagles. We started hunting about 9:00 AM and kicked the first rabbit about ten minutes later.. The hounds ran almost steady after that. I'd shoot a rabbit, and before I could get it cleaned they would hit another track. The two of us shot 6 rabbits , and at 1;30 PM we had to catch the dogs and pull them off a track, because we were both WHIPPED.. Great day to end the season.
  14. My favorite one is satin..I LOOOOVE how it feels nestled up against Big Bob and The Boys ! Errr...Uh.. Back to turkey feet..<<blush>>.. I have one set of feet I kept intact. The one with my longest spurs ( 1 7/16 "). I have them hanging together on a lanyard on my memory shelf off to one side of my box calls..They look pretty cool there.
  15. I have a gallon Ziploc bag full of beards dating back to 1975 in my freezer in the garage. I have one big fan on the wall and a couple of others dried and kept between sheets of cardboard to use with my "Pretty Boy" full strut decoy. I lost my spurs prior to 1994 in a house fire, but I have a couple dozen of 1" and longer spurs taken since then strung on a rawhide thong over my box call collection. I don't keep spurs under an inch.
  16. YUP ! I dust them in House Autry Seafood breader which is a nice light breading, and then fry them in butter with just enough canola oil to stretch the butter.
  17. I went up to the property and cleaned out all of my bluebird boxes...Evicted a couple of mice .. Went in the camper ( at The Mermaid's "request") and cleaned up the mouse droppings and put down some more mouse poison. Made it to the Legion in time for "Sunday School"....Blew 20 bucks on bell jar tickets... Came home and took my NAP, and then cooked up my LAST package of perch filets for supper..
  18. THREE DEGREES ??...You sure earned that one, Kid !! Good job and nice 'yote !
  19. " You see these white, smilin' teeth of mine , well you know they're not my own. Mine rolled away like CHICKLETS down the street in San Antone" A line from the Bobby Bare song " The Winner"...
  20. All I said was that I thought Barbie's purse looked TACKY.....
