  1. Best I can do is a box of Super X .270 for $5.99.... I DO have some pretty old shotshell boxes, some of which are marked at les than $3 for 25. I have a modest accumulation ( rather than a COLLECTION) of old shotshells and metallic cartridges.. Ever hear of a .25-36 Marlin ? Me neither, but I have one, sitting right on the shelf between a 25-20 Win and a .303 Savage.... I have some Super X 12 gauge shotshells that still have the patent # on them....
  2. It is certainly NOT a golden shiner, or a creek chub, which are two separate species.. It looks to me like a fallfish, which is very common especially in rivers and streams...Locally, they are called white chubs or river chubs, and they often grow to 12" or 14" or even larger, although the average size is less than 10".
  3. Your buddy is mistaken..The .308 IS a great deer round...So is the 7mm08...And the .270 Win...And the 30-06 and about 50 other chamberings.. Get a .308 to go along with your target rifle.. Grab the Sako or the Kimber...Both quality firearms.. Wait a minute....GRAB ??..You're not ROB, are you ??
  4. Yellow jackets......HATE those Sons of Bees !!!
  5. Thanks, Growie....Actually, it got dark and threatened rain a couple times this afternoon, but never rained a drop... Got everything in...let it rain...I'll sleep good tonite...<,smile>>...
  6. Yes, I have the last two years...Both times I have had turnips the size of baseballs and radishes probably 6-8 " long.. Perhaps I've been lucky, with no early killing frost the last two years..Of course, as in all farming, it's always a gamble... All that said, I had planned to have the seed planted a couple of weeks ago, but have been plagued by breakdowns, both with the equipment and my rickety old body, which have delayed me a couple of weeks...
  7. Well, after a series of delays and breakdowns, I'm finally ready to do my fall planting today... I have three acres plowed and disced ( and disced, and disced) adjacent to my 2 year old existing clover plot.. I'm planting half of it with clover ( NWTF Rut-N-Strut mix) with oats for cover and fall feed, and the other half to the rape, turnip, radish mix that has done well in the past for me... They are predicting thunderstorms here tomorrow afternoon and evening..After I get the seed in, I'll have my fingers crossed for rain..
  8. I suspect that the gun industries saw the stain non glare stocks and matte metl finishes as sort of a "double windfall".. They were less expensive to manufacture and they came at a time when camo finishes were becoming popular on hunting guns...With a dull stock and matte blue, who NEEDS a camo finish for waterfowl and turkeys..??...One of the most successful gobbler hunters I know used to cover his brightly finished 1100 with camo tape..Then he won an 870 Express (in a local gobbler contest) and he's used it as is ever since to kill many more gobblers.
  9. Not to MENTION the fact that he sometimes wears SHORTS in the woods at inappropriate times... Now I can't swear to this, because I haven't met him face to face, but I heard from a VERY RELIABLE SOURCE that his breath smells and he doesn't love JESUS !!...
  10. My moldy memory might be off a bit, too, Ants....I do recall it was kind of a plain Jane finished gun, but that may have been previous to the time that they started putting matte blued finishes on guns to reduce manufacturing costs, as they did with the Remington 870 Express..
  11. Actually, Biz, the only way to tell for sure is to eat one.... After an hour, if your crotch starts to itch like crazy, they were CRAB apples....
  12. Brilliant suggestion, Dinsdale ! BTW, Eagle, there is a GORGEOUS Sako 6.5 x 55 in the classifieds...It would DESERVE a high end scope... Just tryin' to HELP..<<grin>>....
  13. Good day, Larry....There are some northerns in Silver and they fight pretty good in the warm water this time of the year...You may have had an encounter with one, or a hog largemouth... I have never fished Silver but talking to guys that have over the last 40 years, everyone mentions lots of perch, but small... Hope you cleaned enough for another meal of fish rolls !
  14. Ants.....I think have the "Hawk" part right.... I do believe that Remington made a birch stock, dull finish no frills model called the "Mohawk" that was mechanically the same as the 11-48... Or rather as the 48 which was simply a 3 shot version of the 5 shot 11-48..
  15. I have a soft spot for 11-48s.. My first repeater was an 11-48 16 gauge modified....I bought it used for $85 in 1964...
  16. Sailing....That's just the " John Wayne" in you coming out..
  17. My theory regarding scopes and recticules is KISS.... I prefer just a plain duplex crosshair.. Of course, I also like low powered variables and fixed powered scopes...And wood stocks, AND blued metal, etc.. I have hunted medium and big game from New Mexico to Alaska and from Wyoming to Newfoundland, much of the time with a Leupold fixed 4X, and I can honestly never remember a time when I felt disadvantaged due to lack of magnification... Some of my shots have been in the 300-400 yard range, too. Put your Zeiss on any rifle you prefer and go hunting...Those fancy recticules are more suited to EXTREME long range shooting , further than most of us prefer to shoot.
  18. My main whitetail rifle is my Remmy 700 Mountain rifle in 7mm08.. If I am watching the wide open spaces where a long range shot is a good possibility, I set up in a position where I can get a good solid shot from my bipod with my M70 laminate stock .280.. Several days a year for a change of pace I carry my M1 Garand ( 30-06 of course) just because I like to carry it and I like to shoot it. Shots within 100 yards are no problem with its issue battle peep sight. I bought a couple of 5 shot en-bloc clips for it so it's legal to use in NY. I'd like to carry it in PA, but semi autos are not allowed down there for deer...
  19. Okay, Partner....The stock is listed at $144. The handguard is listed at $45... They are both unfinished and semi inletted, so you'd have some work to do fitting it.
  20. It's on there....There is a search bar in the upper left hand corner of the homepage...
