  1. No , dang it, mine does not have the aircraft leader sights or the monopod...I think it is mid war production, after they had quit doing the aircraft sights but before the "last ditch" models where they really cut corners..It is quite well made and has the chrome lined bore. I have read that in practice that the aircraft sights didn't work very well..Understandable, trying to hit a fast flying airplane with a rifle !
  2. I have my 1966 small game license right here...$3.25... Attached is a duck stamp ..$3.00..Duck stamps went from $15 to $25 this year.. Turkey permits were free...
  3. They are very common here in southern Steuben...The proper name of the larva is WARBLE..Down south they are called WOLVES... They are kind of gross, but they come off with the skin and do not affect the meat.. I ignore them... Want to come over for a squirrel supper ?..<<grin>>....
  4. Yeah some rifles are difficult make attractive, like the M/N and the Italian Carcanos.. Good luck with your Jap..I suspect it will be tougher to find parts to restore it than it was with the SMLE.. I have two Japs, both bringbacks...I have a Type 99 7.7 that is pretty nice, all matching parts and missing only the cleaning rod and dust cover.. The other is a type 38 6.5 and it has a mismatched bolt but is all original except for that.. I have never shot either rifle..They are currently on display at my American Legion post, along with my Long Branch SMLE, My Oberndorf 1938 K98K and a M/N that I believe was captured and rearsenaled by the Finns in the 1939 Winter War in Finland..
  5. Good work 45-70...Looking forward to the picts.. Some people think the SMLEs are ugly..I think they are ruggedly handsome.. I consider many of the MODERN selective fire military arms BUTT-UGLY... Presently all of my milsurps are as issued, with one exception..I have a M48 Yugo in 8x57 that I installed a MOJO peep sight on, because my old eyes no longer work well open sights.. It mounts on the rear sight base.. I kept the original rear sight so that I can put it back on the rifle if I want to..I am also considering installing an aftermarket trigger on it, because the issue trigger is AWFUL...Heavy and creepy..
  6. I wonder what question she just axed him ?
  7. I have been hunting over 50 years, so there are SOOOO many changes, I'll just touch on a few... 1. Land use here in the southern tier has changed from agricultural to recreational.. Most of the farmers who owned most of the farms when I started hunting are dead or retired, and their relatively large land parcels have been broken up into smaller parcels owned by people from out of the area.. It's hard to walk very far anymore without encountering a property line, and people understandably, want to reserve their land for their own use. 2. Not very much of the farmland was posted. That land that was posted was generally available for locals to hunt..Neighbors let neighbors hunt..The posters were for "city hunters" and "flatlanders" who were generally considered to be unsafe and unethical, which of course was not true..Some of the worst offenders were, and still are, the locals.. 3. Hardly anybody had a scope on their shotguns..Ithaca Deerslayers with rifle type sights were considered cutting edge technology. The majority of hunters just used the bead sight on their smoothbore shotgun for shooting slugs. 4. Turkeys were just getting established and were huntable in only a few western counties.. Even then they were spread very thin. Very few people knew how to hunt them. In the fall they were generally driven like deer. Anyone who had even a minimum amount of turkey hunting and calling savvy was thought to possess mystical powers. 5. Everybody drove deer, and nearly ALL the land got hunted...This . plus the fact that relatively few doe permits were issued resulted in seeing quite a few deer on some days. Today, due to the amount of property that is not hunted or perhaps only hunted a few days per season, deer have countless "refuges" where they can avoid hunting pressure. 2.
  8. If that was ME in the picture I'd be standing right at eye level with her boo..er...knock....er...CHEST...
  9. Reminds me of myself when I was younger... I used to get a WICKED tan every summer...<<grin>>....
  10. Yeah, check 'em out and get back to us... If they turn out to be the 8 x 56R, they might be a good deal, since ammo is available..If they are the (earlier) 8 x 50R chambering..Not so much so, at least if you want a shooter. I'll be looking forward to your reply.. Isn't this stuff FUN ??...<<grin>>.....
  11. I'm not sure we're talking about the same chambering here, Good Buddy.. Ammo To Go has ammo 8 x 50R Lebel, which is not the same as 8 x 50R Austrian.. They don't list any 8 x 50R Austrian ammo.. They also have 8 x 56 Austrian, in Privi Partisan.. Were those Steyr carbines perhaps chambered for the 8 x 56 ? That would be preferable because that ammo is available in factory loads with reloadable brass (Hornday or Prvi)
  12. Beautiful buck... Those eyeguards are downright BODACIOUS !!
  13. Nice, Larry...I especially like the last pluckin' picture ! I love any kind of wingshooting, but dove hunting is some of the best ...
  14. Yeah..Unfortunately a cool looking WALLHANGER... 8 x 50R ammo and components are tough to come by and expensive if you can find any.. The later 8 x 56 is a little more available, but still not plentiful...I guess that Privi Partisan loads factory ammo, but production is intermittent and its often hard to find..
  15. Mine is not coming along too well...Or rather, THE MERMAID'S list is not coming along too well... She reminded me again this morning of all the stuff she wanted to get done this summer that HASN'T happened... And here I am, ready to shift gears into HUNTING mode....<<SIGH>>.....
  16. Pygmy

    no velvet

It's that time of the year...In two weeks, they will be nearly all bare horned...
  17. I want Jaeger's Sako 6.5 x55 carbine, but I can't afford it and I need another rifle like I need another hole in my head.. If I bought it, I'd have to use the money I have set aside for a new roof, and then the Mermaid would kick my silly a** out in the street, and I'm getting too old to look for ANOTHER new place to live...
  18. Yogi's favorite.....A Pic-A-Nic basket.....
  19. Since squirrel season opens Sept 1, I decided to check out one of my favorite hickory groves yesterday.. As I entered the north end of the grove, I was at first a little concerned..The first few trees I checked had practically no cuttings or hulls on the ground and my binoculars revealed very few nuts on the upper branches... However, after moving further into the grove, I started seeing fresh cutting and hulls littering the ground and I could see lots of nuts hanging on the branches... I stood still for a few moments, and soon it sounded like it was raining lightly.. There were squirrels in the leafy treetops cutting away, and the cuttings were falling all around me.. I suspect that the squirrels have been working beechnuts and now are just getting started on the hickories.. Any of you squirrel hunters been checking the hickories in your area ?
  20. Yup, you're right, Culver..During the September season your gun can hold up to seven shells.. I haven't hunted early geese in a couple of years.. The only time that the plug has been OUT of my 11-87 was when I used it as a tent gun for bear protection up in Alaska...
  21. I knew they removed it for snow geese..I'll check on the regs for the Canadas..That would fun to have a flock of big honkers 20 yards overhead and have 5 rounds in the gun !! I have taken as many as 4 from a flock with the 3 shot....Bang...Bang...Bang...<<throw single in breech>>..Bang..<<throw another single in breech>>..BANG...Hehehe..
  22. "Caged Alpha Monkey"..??.. That reminds me of a girl I used to date from Cameron...
  23. You need a shotgun that will hold no more than 3 rounds...Other than that, I think you're good.
  24. My favorite is COLD, but if that's not available I'll drink warm.... COLD is merely a convenience...
  25. Yeah, it was Marlin's answer to Winchester's 25-35...Basically the same ballistics.. I also have a Winchester WRA ( Win Rimfire Automatic)..In size it is between the .22 LR and the .22 Mag. Ballistics are similar to .22 LR. It was made specifically for the Win Model 1903 semi auto, which was the only firearm it was ever chambered in.
