Great hunt and story !! Nice Newfie bull, also..!! A buddy of mine did two hunts with Patey and he and his partner killed nice bulls both times.... I love moose hunting....Good vittles, too ! What load did you use in your 8 x 57. .? I also have an Oberndorf K98K , circa 1938, but it's all original and too valuable now to sporterize...I'd like to have an 8 x 57 sporter, though...A young fellow I worked with a few years ago was making some very nice full stock sporters from 8 x 57 Yugos...I wish I had him make me one..<<sigh>> Another opportunity squandered..

Congrats on your moose !....How about a trip report on your Newfie hunt ?

Take about 4 fingers of bourbon.....Might not help the cold but it will help you sleep... Works for me....

In my area they have been hammering the hickories..I have been out three times and have shot 17 squirrels... They will be feeding in the oaks also, especially in areas where there are no hickories or pignuts.. Keep in mind that in years when there is a heavy acorn crop the squirrels tend to be spread out more, because there is food everywhere... They also tend to feed quite quietly in the tops of the oaks , unlike the frantic running and jumping from limb to limb that they do when feeding in hickories...Hunt very slowly, and be alert for subtle noises that might be made from squirrels moving in the treetops and cutting nuts... It will get easier after the leaves start to drop and most of the nuts are on the ground..Lots more action on the ground then, with squirrels running around gathering fallen nuts..

Probably the most endangered tree is the Eastern Slippery Dingleberry Tree... The Eastern Slippery Dingleberry Tree was once the favorite, and exclusive nesting habitat to the now extinct Kazoonie-zoonie Bird... The Kazoonie-zoonie bird is now extinct because of its strange social habit of flying in ever decreasing concentric circles until it flies up its own asshole... Any questions..??..Anyone..?...Anyone..?..Beuhler ??

Can't blame the DEC for that one..It is mandated by the International Migratory Bird act, that the season has to be limited to a certain number of days per year and cannot be held during the bird's nesting season... By making the season open only four days per week,September through March, the state can stretch the season over a longer part of the calendar year...Many people can't hunt during the week, so the Friday through Monday gives more people a chance to hunt.. I think that in this case the state did a good job of maximizing hunting opportunites while staying within the legal boundaries of the Migratory Bird Act..

God bless you.... I love you... I mean, like a SON !! Did your Momma ever hang around the Corning area when she was younger ?

I don't know how many deer you have in your area, but 1 deer per year on 100 acres sounds kind of light to me.. My property is 107 acres and we're not overrun with deer... We usually get 4-6 different bucks and maybe 15-20 does on trailcam...Keep in mind we are not fenced and the deer move between our property and surrounding neighbors.. We generally kill 1-2 bucks and 2-4 does per season, and the population seems to stay about the same..

I don't have to look for a "slight slope" to gut my deer on...ALL of them are shot on a slope around here, except in the river bottoms, and I don't hunt there.. Out in Colorado I've had to tie them off to a tree or a sagebrush so they didn't roll or slide down the hill while I was butchering them..Both deer and elk...

Donuts ? Can't be the guy is a cop...he'd be eating the bait... A friend of mine ran a bear hunting camp in Maine...Many of his customers were policemen from Philadelphia, and he used day old donuts for bait.. He put signs in his treestands..." Please don't eat the bait"....

You're welcome to your opinion, BUT when you make a stupid, high handed comment such as " hunters who use rifles that aren't capable of a 2 inch group at 100 yards" are UNETHICAL, be prepared to take the flak... There are a whole bunch of us old farts who have probably been around the woods a lot longer than YOU have, who know better...

Since you are a guest on another person's land, I would inform him of the situation...IF he gives you approval, then do whatever your conscience tells you.. I wouldn't jeapordize a landowners relationship with his neighbor without clearing it with him first.

Correctimundo, Freytown... Much of southwestern NY was shotgun, handgun, ML only until rifles were approved within the last few years....Some of us old timers hunted with shotguns and slugs for many, many years...

I checked out the BPR...It was only made from 1997-2001... Perhaps it didn't catch on simply because it was "different".... I've never actually seen nor known anybody who had one..

I don't shoot offhand at anything unless it's REAL close.. Whenever I set up on watch the first thing I do is figure out what I'm going to rest on should a shot present itself. I'll take a 300 yard shot any day from a steady rest over a 50 yard shot offhand.. I was never a great shot offhand, but when I was younger I was probably average.. Now that I'm older, if I don't have a good rest, I just don't shoot.

I'm going for a beer and some popcorn...

Nope...I can see all four..The right hindleg is partially obscured by a bush, but I can see the gambrel/hock area.. I had a three legged dog once...His name was Tripod... One of his hind legs was missing and every time he lifted his leg to pee, he fell over...

Yes, all bullets deflect, and shotgun slugs deflect as badly as rifle bullets.. However, despite what Pistol 71, being the fountain of knowledge that he is, may say, there IS such a thing as a brush gun.. It is a short, light, handy firearm that is much quicker and more maneuverable to use in close, brushy cover than a heavier, longer, more unwieldy firearm... A 6 pound Marlin 336 in whatever chambering could qualify as a brush gun, as could a Rem 760 carbine...A bolt gun with a 24 or 26" barrel which weighs perhaps 8.5-9 pounds with scope would not be such a good candidate. Chambering is less important, since regardless of what you shoot, you need to find an opening in the brush to shoot it through, however, it's a good idea to use a bullet with good penetration, because perfect broadside shot are unlikely, and you may have to drive through considerable tissue in order to reach the vitals..

I guess there must have been a lot of unethical hunters out there a few years back running around the woods with their levers, pumps and autos that on their best day wouldn't shoot better than a 3"-4" group off the bench at 100 yards.. A lot of military rifles, both as issued and sporterized would fall into that category too.. I'll bet Grandpa and his buddies with their Winchester and Marlin levers and their Remington Model 8's and 14s and their Krag and Enfield sporters would be shocked to learn how unethical they were..

Yeah, I bagged one in the Bronx myself once...But that was a LONG time ago...

I don't think there is any issue with a bow... You have to register your firearms, but I don't believe that even the Canadians have gotten around to registering bows and arrows yet.. A phone call to Canadian Customs should answer your question for sure, however..

Dang !! Who's the good lookin' young stud holding the shotgun ?? Once again, nice gun and a priceless heirloom..Those guns were made with quality and workmanship that you just don't see in today's products, unless you pay a king's ransom...

I agree with Steve wholeheartedly....I'd like to pick 20 shooters at random from this forum and see how many could REALLY shoot a 1" 3 or 5 shot group at 100 yards with their deer rigs..I'll bet it would be damn few and that includes yours truly..

Very cool...They were only made a few years, like from 1955-1961 or something like that.. Very unique and very special shotgun, especially since it belonged to your Dad.... Yours was the middle weight..They made an all steel Standard weight, The Twelvette and the twentyweight. Thy were one of only two 2 shot auto shotguns that I ever was aware of, the other being an Armalite that was made briefly in the early 60s..
