  1. No, Deerthug....That's the way it's done on Fire Island...
  2. Good deal, Eddie...I have been lucky....My last 2 garage fridges have been given to me by friends who were getting new ones... I call it my BBD ( Beer, Bait, Deer) fridge......
  3. The 12 gauge is fine....Just use light field loads of 1 oz. of shot( same as a standard 20 gauge load).. Promo loads such as "Squirrel and rabbit loads" from win or rem or game loads from Federal all work fine and they are cheap. Go with #6 shot..7 1/2s kill ok, but you'll be picking more shot from the meat. The payload of shot is what counts in shotgun loads...Without splitting hairs and given similar chokes, a 1 oz. load of shot gives similar performance whether it is fired from a 20, a 16, or a 12 gauge... the advantages of a larger bore is that it allows heavier loads of shot to be fired, increasing pellet counts and allowing more hits on target at longer range.. For all practical purposes, a 12 gauge firing a 1 oz. load of shot is no more "powerful" than a 20 gauge firing 1 oz. of shot...
  4. Congrats....I am a double gun fan myself...My main go-to small game gun for the last 40 years has been an Ithaca SKB model 100 side by side in 20 gauge... I have heard of the Ugartecheas, but I'm not familiar with them... Some Spanish guns are very good, and some not so good..I had three relatively cheap Spanish doubles in the past, and all three handled nice and were good shooters, all had soft firing pins and eventually that would lead to broken cocking springs...
  5. Doc, is your hornet a Model 43 ?...
  6. I have to make some qualifications... I LOVE wingshooting...There is no better wingshooting IMHO than waterfowl hunting...Upland game such as pheasants, grouse and woodcock also rate high on my list... However, where I live, opportunities for good wingshooting are very limited..I get maybe a day or two of good duck shooting, then it's over...Upland shooting is also very limited here.. SO, considering the hunting that is available to me, here is my list... I have been a passionate spring turkey hunter over 40 years, and I have good gobbler hunting right at my doorstep, so I'd have to rate spring turkey hunting as #1.. I love to hunt squirrels and they are my favorite small game meat...Hunting pressure for them is very light and I can easily put 30 to 40 of them in the freezer per season, making for many tasty meals... I also love to hunt rabbits with beagles, and although I don't have any dogs myself, a couple of my friends have them and welcome me to hunt with them..Rabbits are also high on my list as table fare..I'd have to rate squirrels and rabbits as a tie for # 2... Deer are a distant #3 place....If I didn't love venison and were not accustomed to have 2 or 3 deer in the freezer each year, I'd probably spend deer season doing something more fun, like hunting small game or fishing...
  7. A Belgian Browning 16 gauge in good condition for $350 ? It must have a poly choke on it to be listed that cheap..It might also be the standard weight 16 rather than the Sweet 16, which brings a premium..In any case, if it is in good functional condition it is well worth the price as a shooter. The Spanish double is probably a good gun, but I have no experience with them.. Franchis are good quality guns and are a good choice for upland game. Due to their light weight they are better suited to lighter field loads, but for a general small game gun , that is fine. Light to medium field loads kill upland birds and small game just fine, and they don't beat your shoulder up while they are doing it.
  8. .........GRIN....... Whatever makes you happy, my friend....
  9. Hmmmm.. You must be NEW around here....Welcome aboard...
  10. Sometimes when the discussion of rifle accuracy comes up, I seem to be the only one whose rifles don't punch one hole groups at 100 yards... Must be my Parkinson's.....
  11. Two inches is perfectly acceptable accuracy for a hunting rifle.. . One of my three main hunting rifles, a bolt action ( M70 Win), won't group MOA on it's best day..1.75 " to 2 " is more the norm.. However she's a killer...I taken everything from woodchucks to Alaskan bull moose with that rifle, and some of the shots have been 300 yards PLUS...
  12. I use Irish Spring often...perhaps because my birthday is St. Patrick's Day... Now I know the real reason that deer spook when they get downwind of me...Irish Spring... For all of these years I thought it was because they knew I was a fat little gnome with a rifle hiding in the bushes trying to kill them..
  13. Actually, many beautiful women have compared me to " Steve McQueen sawed off at the knees"... Of course, that was many years ago....In a galaxy far, far away.... Oh CRAP !! There we go off topic again... SORRY, Eagle...<<double BLUSH>>....
  14. I asked my proctologist if he thought that he had chosen the right profession... He said " You bet your ass ! "....
  15. I never hunted with a BAR.. They had 6 of them in the armory of the ship that I served aboard but the pricks wouldn't let me take one home with me when I disembarked... They wouldn't let me take any of the Thompson SMGS or Win M12 riot guns either...
  16. I do NOT have personal experience with this bullet, but I have done some online research and have reports from some people who have taken game with it...There are some negative reports, but the positive reports out number them about 3 to 1... From the reports I have read, the bullet performs similar to the EARLY ballistic tips...Works great on broadside shots on the ribs but avoid heavy bone, ESPECIALLY if you are pushing it at magnum velocities.. At .280 velocities and considering the fact that the shooter will most likely be shooting at extended ranges, I expect that the bullet will work fine for deer.
  17. The only time I've seen a coyote react to me like that was the time I was wearing my roadrunner suit.. Don't forget your pistol next time...
  18. I agree this is a good thing.. We had a dry May, but a very wet June.. JUNE is the month that matters ...I have not seen a turkey poult yet.. Wet weather in June is deadly on turkey poults..
  19. I appreciate your input, but I have done my research on this bullet before loading it.. Several sources stated that the bullet performs well on game..I haven't read any negative input regarding it's performance.. Actually it is constructed much like the Nosler Ballistic tip, which I have used on perhaps 20 head of medium game from pronghorns to 400 pound bull caribou and have had excellent terminal performance. As far as mule deer being any more of a challenge to bullet integrity, my experience is limited ( 2 bucks shot by me and 2 shot by my hunting partners), but they seem to be no harder to kill than whitetails..A mature muley usually is not much bigger than a good sized whitetail..I never weighed one, but I'm guessing perhaps 200 pounds dressed.. No checking with an outfitter..This is a DIY hunt being conducted by a very experienced DIY hunter...I know because I have done several DIY hunts with him..
  20. Heck, I'm in my 60's, and I STILL bite my lead split shot... That stuff doesn't affect me....affect me....affect me....affect me...
  21. Mowing six acres of lawn TWICE a week... Managing to get in enough fishing so that The Mermaid and I can eat fish twice a week... Trying to keep my local American Legion Post from going bankrupt... Currently working up a long range load for a friend's rifle... Trying desperately to get the vision of Wooly's bony knees out of my mind before I go blind...
  22. Finally got down to the brass tacks of load development.. I shot a 3/4" 3 shot group( 100 yards) this morning with my buddy's rifle.. 162 Hornady Amax, 57.0 gr RL 22, CCI 200 primer and Norma brass... I'll see if I can tweak it a little and increase the velocity a bit without sacrificing the accuracy... I like the Vortex scope, especially the turrets with the nice positive 1/4 minute clicks..
