Biz steered you right with the Bowsite and MM forums...Lots of good info there..I have put together a number of good hunts using mostly info from these forums.. However, some of the bowhunting snobs on Bowsite won't talk to you if they know you are a rifle hunter. Good luck !

I'm still using the Herter's beam balance that I bought in 1973... Yeah, it's slower, but I am not a high volume reloader...If I load 40 rounds at a time that's a lot for me...When I charge cases, I sit back, relax and take my time and weigh every charge carefully.

Don't tell me... That is the month that SMURFETTE's sister comes to visit and they both go skinny dipping in the pool...

The .284 Win is a fatter case with a greater powder capacity than the 7mm08. It is ballistically similar to the .280 Rem, which produces about 200 FPS more velocity than the 7mm08 with bullets in the 140 grain range..

All of this SQUIRREL talk reminds me...I still have 2 packages left in the freezer from last year.. I need to get them eaten up Rikky-Tik so I'll have room for next season's crop, which is only a month away...

There's your tax dollars at work, folks..... -
I have owned three .410 bores and have done quite a bit of squirrel hunting with them..However, I agree with Wildcat in that they are a short range proposition. Very often when squirrels are working the tops of tall hickories and oaks in early season, the squirrels can be in a tree directly over your head and still be out of effective .410 range. My favorite scattergun for early season squirrels is a 1936 vintage Winchester M12 in 16 gauge choked full. Using cheap promo loads of 1 oz. of #6 shot, it pops squirrels out of the tops of the tallest trees with authority. I just have to be careful on close shots to avoid mangling the critters with the tight pattern. On close shots I try to "fringe" the squirrel's head with the pattern, or allow it to move further away until my pattern opens up .

No, it's not a name, it's a PORTRAIT... And it's in 3-D... In small letters right above it..." Scratch-N-Sniff".....

I'll have to talk to Miranda about this... She and I are meeting tomorrow night down behind Merlin Ledbetter's hog waller to gig a few frawgs and then maybe pick a few ticks off each other.. I've never been too keen on blondes, but she's kinda SPECIAL... I keep telling her if she keeps hanging around with me, I'll wear some of that BABY FAT off her...<<WINK, WINK >>...

Thanks for your input, Larry... If I were to hunt elk with my .280, I'd use the same 140 grain Barnes TTSX that I would use for deer, and still be confident of having an exit hole on a broadside shot. However, if I ever do hunt elk with a centerfire rifle, I'll probably use my 9.3x62 with a 250 grain Barnes TSX, which will probably leave an exit hole regardless of the shot angle.

Nosler BTs have been accurate in every rifle I have ever fired them in.. For years the 140 BT was my pet load in my .280..I also used it in my 7mm08 for several years and it was very accurate and killed well..

Well, my buddy's rifle is ready to go back to him... With 58.0 grains of RL-22 and the 162 Hornady Amax it consistently groups about an inch ( 3 shots) at 100 yards..I have it sighted 3 inches high at 100...I loaded up all of his brass and scrubbed his barrel again.. He is taking it to a 600 yard range that his hunting buddy owns to put it through its paces, and in about a month he'll be above treeline in Colorado looking for a high country mulie..

Yes, Growie, I'm seeing lots of HOP toads while mowing and discing my food plots..<<grin>>... I see a few of the OTHER kind now and then, but I don't dare fool around with them... The Mermaid counts my "blue diamonds".....

Makes sense, Wildcat... After all, "08" IS bigger than "06"....

Obviously the guy isn't exactly a rocket scientist concerning rifle ballistics..<<grin>>... Tell him that a rifle expert you know named Lawdwaz says that 7mm Mags make good tomato stakes...

One grain makes no difference...In fact, with bullets available for the 7mm08, 20 grains makes less difference than one might think... Gun writer Dave Petzal in one of his books, was writing about the .270 Win, which is very similar in performance and bullet weights to the 7mm08.. He said that in the real world, he could tell no difference in performance between the 130 grain and the 150 grain bullets..He said as far as he was concerned, one killed as well and was as easy to hit with as the other.. If your rifle groups one bullet weight better than the other, just smile and use it..

Hey....Where's BUBBA been lately ?...

Often turkey buzzards will soar in a certain area simply because the thermals there are favorable for soaring... Seeing a group of a dozen or more soaring close together does not necessarily indicate that there is a food source nearby...
