  1. This conversation brings to mind something that a camp manager of a caribou camp in northern Quebec told me and my partners on a hunt there in 1998.. Marcel said...." Remember....You are HUNTING, not SHOPPING.."...

    Skunk ?

Old wives tale..I have personally disproved that theory and talked to a couple of friends who have also disproved it, much to our chagrin...
  3. Granny and her "Rheumatiz Medicine"....hehehehe "What's fer supper, Granny ?" " Hawg jowls and possum innards..".. And then there was ELLY MAE in those skin tight jeans..... Did y'all know that Jethro's Dad was a professional heavyweight boxer..?..Max Baer... Jethro was Max Baer Jr.
  4. When I was young and single, I always had problems with the girls climbing all over me, trying to take advantage of my virtue and innocence... Sometimes I had to bring a bushel of corn or a bucket of apples to distract them long enough so I could make my getaway !...
  5. I had one of those once, Larry, but it turned out to be a mutant, renegade, runaway FART.. On a serious note , be careful and follow your Doctor's orders..A strangulated hernia can be serious business...Good luck, Buddy...
  6. Sounds like a good combo, Eagle, and 1 1/4" groups is super accuracy for a lever action carbine. The .35 Rem earned its rep as an excellent killer of deer sized game with the 200 grain bullet. That round nose soft point should give you good expansion also, even at moderate .35 Rem velocity... Regardless of what some hyper velocity guys think, a bullet doesn't have to be traveling 3000+ to be a good killer on game.
  7. Yeah, I remember when my parents were AGHAST at how long the BEATLES hair was... Now it's common to see young folks running around with so much metal in thier face that you could cut off thier head troll for lake trout with it..
  8. Thank goodness for the marvels of modern science... Without medication, what used to be a hard drive is now a 4" floppy...
  9. " Hardened hunters "..?.. Hmmm...Thanks First Light... I have a promise tonite and you just reminded me to take my Viagra...

    carcass

I am fortunate in that respect...I have 100 acres of private land on which to drop the remains without bothering anyone..I also have a friend who processes deer and has a pit dug evry year on his land for the leavings..Sometimes when he is grinding some burger or making some sausage for me, he lets me drop the carcasses in his pit..
  11. They have them at www.buffaloarmsco.com. They aint cheap, but at About $2.00 per round, it ain't bad for an obsolete cartridge..A box would probably do ya. How many times you gonna shoot Grandpa's rifle anyway..? A friend of mine owns and hunts with a Rem 14 .30 Rem..
  12. Or you could give that K-38 to me... I'm a GRANDFATHER and I promise I'd treat it SPECIAL....
  13. Just look right through him like you are staring into outer space and say in your best Peter Lorre impression.... " It's the VOICES...The VOICES told me to come to the range today...Would you mind going downrange to change my TARGET for me ? "...

    Skunk ?

I have never caufgt a skunk in a livetrap, but I have friends who have done it, and this is waht they tell me. Approach the trap very slowly and deliberately, making no abrupt moves. Place a small tarp, blanket or something similar over the trap, skunk and all. Very slowly and deliberately pick up the trap and place it in the back of your truck ( or preferably, someone else's truck, hehehe). Drive out in the country, and carefully release the skunk , or drop him trap and all in the creek and come back tomorrow for your trap.
  15. Paula... You and I will have to get together and skin a squirrel someday...Don't tell Bubba, though...<wink,wink>...
  16. That's the way I do them, except I don't dick around half a day like that goober in the fur hat... I did six of them this morning in about half an hour and that included disjointing them and cleaning the blood/hair from them. I disjoint them into 4 legs and the back and discard the ribcage, which has little meat on it anyway.
  17. Good luck, Kid... Pay attention to your guide's advice..He has seen MANY more of those critters than you have.. Only thing I can tell you, is look for a goat with cutters as high as his ears and lots of mass and a nice long curl on the main beam..Those things are tough to judge and your guide should help you with that.. As per mulies...An average mule deer buck looks HUGE next to an average NY whitetail... His ears will be about 18" wide, which will give you a reference on the spread...The tines should be forked and well defined, meaning a 4x4 should have two deep Ys on each beam.. Good luck..I envy you... Looking forward to your report and pictures when you return..
  18. Geeze, Culver, I think maybe Growie is SWEET on you....<<wink>>..

    Skunk ?

Thanks for the bait advice, Culver and Cabin... Nilla Wafers and marshmallows.. A win/win situation..If I don't catch the durn skunk ,the Mermaid and I can eat the BAIT...hehehehehe...

    Skunk ?

Hehehehehe..Don't think I haven't THOUGHT of that, Culver...But with my luck the first thing I'd catch would be my finance's old gray cat, and I'm getting too OLD to be looking for a new place to live again....
  21. I suspect I have a skunk living under my utility shed, since I have been smelling one around there and can see where something has been burrowing under the shed... A couple of nights ago I set a live trap and baited it with cat food. Two nights in a row something sprung the trap, evidently by trying to get the bait through the side of the trap, so last night I set up my trail cam by the trap to see what was going on.. This morning there were about 100 images...No skunk, but at least a dozen different cats.. I guess I'm gonna have to go down to the local feed store and buy a sack of 'Purina Skunk Chow"...hehehe.
  22. I don't know if that would be a good idea, Greene.. You ever try to CLEAN one ?
  23. I've been on a few hunts in grizzly country. On one of my Alaska hunts, an unguided Supercub drop for caribou, my party saw 13 grizzlies between the four of us on a ten day hunt. Although none of us ever had a hostile encounter with a bear, it sure does trigger the old "pucker reflex" when you hear something shuffling around your tent in the middle of the night and know that there is nothing between you and IT except a little piece of nylon fabric. On some hunts we brought a short barreled shotgun as a "tent gun" and usually a couple of us ( like me) slept with a handgun under our pillows. On hunt a with a smaller weight limit like the supercub drops,we could not afford the luxury of an extra firearm but we always had a rifle in the tent. We just hoped that if the unthinkable happened and a bear DID come inside the tent, he didn't grab the guy with the GUN...
  24. There have been many sightings in the north country, in Bubba's area. Several witnesses report that he is wearing a placard that says " I AM AN INSTRUCTOR."
  25. While twins are the norm, triplets are not at all uncommon, especially after a mild winter. Some years I see several sets of triplets.
