  1. They are not that warm (but I tend to have cold feet), but I have had a pair LL Bean Maine hunting boots for 20+ years. Tread has been thin for past few years. Just wore a hole in the sole last week. This will be my first time getting the rubber bottom replaced. As long as the leather uppers are in good shape, they will stitch new bottoms on them. The only time my feet were wet in them, was if my feet got sweaty. Treat the leather with Sno-seal or mink oil once a year and good to go. Used them working on ground-level irrigation systems back in my college days, camping, hunting, and snow shoveling. Waded through streams in them to within 2 inches of the boot top and feet stayed dry. Ground hunt and use ladder stands in them.
  2. been using the hot seats for years until seam stitching started to go and the fill was coming out. The ~$10 one from Dick's works well. Butt stays warm while sitting in freezing temps until I stand up. If it is your back that is cold, options are to use: bibs insulated coveralls longer coat mega-warmer on your lower back by your kidneys (either the standard tuck-in or the self-adhesive The mega-warmer on the lower back feels great when when you lug out a heavy tree stand (or late fall backpacking trip). Keeps the muscles a little more relaxed and less stiff by the time you are out of the woods.
  3. Soaked in brine for 24-hours before cooking. sliced carrots sliced onions garlic salt & pepper bacon grease Spread a thin layer bacon grease on the squirrel to keep meat from drying out and use some by the potatoes and onion to add a little more flavor. Baked it in the oven. Came out pretty good, even my pickiest eater had seconds.
  4. Of course the Brady pack would say as long as 1 dangerous person is denied, it is okay violate the constitutional rights and confiscate firearms from 40.000 others. So if someone who has a eating disorder that could potentially threaten their own personal heath is a danger to themselves. Therefore violate their constitutional rights and seize their firearm that the this person uses just to shoot clays or for shooting competitions by rubber-stamping the form. I'm not the doctor, just a middle man. Pass it on. The doctor always knows best and saw the patient. Some doctors spent all of 15 minutes with a patient on move on to the next. Quantity to make the big bucks rather than quality to get it right the first time. Using the argument by the Brady pack, you could do the reverse and say as long as it will wipe out terrorist cell X, level the whole town. Innocents be dammed because of one bad apple. This crap needs a major re-write. Should have at least a second doctor do an independent analysis before it moves up the ladder before revoking their rights. Fewer people seem to think these days. You have to weigh the good and the harm when writing laws. Laws are suppose to protect the people, not make them criminals or violate their rights.
  5. it is better to break a helmet than a head. My cousin split his bicycle helmet the first week he had one by taking a spill. ATV is much faster. Fall out of that and hit a rock with your head and that same cousin of mine will standing there and making out an accident report while waiting for the coroner to pick up the body from the scene. He is happier to give warnings or a ticket, than having to call-in for a meat wagon or make that knock on your family's door to deliver the bad news.
  6. I use Sawyers Permethrin on my outer layers. Only had 1 tick on pant leg so far after going out 1-2 days per week since the start of southern zone early bear season. Some places are known tick areas I was in, like Stewart State Forest. Even for warmer weather I still layer - moisture-wicking shirt and pants. Outer-layer pants are tucked into my boots, then laced up to help keep the ticks off. Hit the wrists and neck with some Deet to prevent crawling under the cuff or collar of my shirt. Peel off outer layers and inspect them - removing anything on them (ticks, burrs, seed pods, thorns) before heading home.
  7. Congrats. Younger does are much easier to eat than an old buck. You can also cut some venison into small strip or cubes and do a stir-fry with peppers, onions, potatoes, garlic, and ginger. Or skip the potatoes and server it over rice. A bit jealous. Have deer eating my radishes and apple tree, but neighbors are too close to hunt without permission using a bow, definitely no gun shots. Came home a couple times last year after hunting all day to see deer in my yard or in the Leo's yard across the street. Also have a judge that lives up the block. No messing around in my neighborhood.
  8. Perhaps the bottom will come loose and they will be stuck up in the tree unable to get back down. Even when we had family property, we never left our ladder stands out. Trespassers would show up coming through the woods from another property. They may just want to grab a few apples off a tree, or illegally hunt on the property. So, we just did not trust them (could take a stand or may find someone in it). My dad once had someone bait the field that he had blind set up in. Shortly after heading in, the game warden shows up with a compliant in hand. The field was by a public road. Someone trespassed on to my grandfather's farm, baited the field, and then called in a report. Turns out the person who did it was someone with a grudge. Once someone sneaked up to the farm house and stole the battery out of the pick-up truck. Enough of these occurrences leaves a mis-trust in people in general.
  9. First one I hit was a doe in 1986 - not enough to drop her and my other shots missed. A friend of the family took her down. I was using a sxs 16 gauge. Knicked the spine with the 00 buck shot (which is legal in that state for deer). I was fine with letting my friend's dad taking her, after all I did not drop her or take the kill shot. First one dropped was a doe. 120 lbs dressed. She fell as soon as I hit her with a 16 gauge semi using a slug. Think that was in 1990 or 1991. That was some nice lean meat.
  10. Friday I paid 2.97 in NJ and 3.35 in Cortland NY for college visit at Cornell.
  11. Good pics. Tried to take a snapshot of one in Sept. It didn't really come out. Thought I scratched up a barrel the same day until I realized it a was part of a web that stuck to it after busting through some brush. Some of those webs are quite strong. Took awhile to clean it off.
  12. Welcome aboard. Sterling can get crowded opening week, but thins out. Must have a Sterling permit to hunt there. Some areas are Archery only, and there are some no-hunting zones (a wildlife sanctuary, Rennaissance fair grounds, ski lift, Appalachian Trail). May want to pick up a trail map for Sterling. At this point. you are locked out of opening 3 days at Sterling. Have to apply by mid-Sept. to get opening weekend. You could head over to Port Jervis to give Huckleberry Ridge or Storm King Mountain a try if have no where else to try. Just watch out of hikers if the weather is nice.
  13. The range was quite busy from the sounds of it on Sunday. If you listen close and follow the source when in certain sections of Stewart, you can tell if the shots are from the range. Heard mix of shotgun, rifle, and pistol coming from there around 4:00 Sunday all in quick succession. You have to keep in mind that a party of pheasant and dove hunters will also take several shots when the birds are flushed. When I do manage to get a week day off to hunt (opening week excepted), there are more open spots to choose from. Last week of deer season is easy to find a spot, but tougher to find the deer.
  14. early part of bow and gun can get crowded, except week days. Late in the season, less hunters out there. Please wear lots of hunter orange during gun season. Last year had movement in front of me just past some thick pines, couldn't quite tell what it was - Ended up being two hunters in all camo. One had an orange hat under his hood. There are about 10 spots they do release pheasants at. They are supposed to release another 100 birds there this week. it is easier with a dog to hunt the pheasants ( or in a party of three, the max persons per vehicle). You must park at a designated parking spot (they are numbered) and it is one vehicle per spot. Must hunt on same side of the road the parking spot is on. NO RIFLES. Wear water proof boots ( there are many soft and mushy areas) and prepare yourself for ticks. Lots of ticks there. I know a couple spots to find some turkeys, but those are some very competitive spots to get. Only got into those spots in the spring and only had hens in range. The Tom was very wary and kept his distance. Spots do open up between 11 and 1 when people head out for lunch or done bird hunting for the day. Packing a lunch can pay off. I am tenatively planning to go there for pheasant Sat afternoon, depending on my morning deer hunt.
  15. Going to a reservation is like traveling to a foreign nation that happens to also speak English. Reservation land is treated like another sovereign nation's land. The resident Natives on a reservation have their government, police force, and judicial system. After all, you don't expect to just cross the border into Canada and starting hunt there without permission/permit for the firearm being transported there and a valid Canadian hunting license do you?
  16. I wish I could, my next kid in-line age wise is too squeamish. Oldest has me going out on a college visit in the Finger Lakes area this weekend. I am limited to a Saturday hunt only. Have to visit some friends camping/canoeing on my way out, then hit the college scene.
  17. What about using a field point on a pheasant? There is a spot that I have seen turkey in and a pheasant during the spring season. There were a few deer tracks around there too. I know I can take turkey with the same tip I have for deer. I have been debating to either go in with a shotgun for the turkey and pheasant in the that spot, or just going there with the bow and concentrating on the deer. Last year I concentrated on turkey in an area that I never saw deer sign-in and took the shotgun. Ended up 20 yards from a nice doe during bow season. Could only watch her nibble a bit and slowly walk away into the trees and brush without a care in the world. Went back there in the afternoon with the bow - no deer. Feel like Charlie Brown when these things happen - "good grief! Well there must be a reason ..."
  18. Back in the late eighty's and 90's when I was at at college (note the rules were different then) I would leave my previous tags with my dad so he could pick up my new license as a buyer's agent. That way when I got home from college late on a Friday, I would be good to grab my gear and go hunt with him Sat. morning at first light. Still have most of my old tags around - keeps track of how many season's I hunted. There is a about 6 years that I didn't hunt since my first real hunt at around age 11. Moved away after college and had no place to hunt (or safely store a firearm) for a few years.
  19. Climbed up into the stand and took off my glove to load up the shells. Dropped camo glove into the leaves below. In the dim pre-morning light, couldn't see the glove. Sat fours in the stand freezing my hand because I didn't want to touch the metal ladder rungs in the 32-35 degree temps to go down and back up.

    real nice deer. Congrats.
  21. Rest easy and heal up. When back on your feet, don't push yourself too hard. Health is important. When back out there hunting, make sure you have someone else with you to drag until you are 100% healed.
  22. Wasn't referring to domestic abuse cases - bedsides that is already on the books. Anyone just claiming someone is a threat to themselves or anyone else should not be immediate confiscation - investigated yes. False claims need to be prosecuted. After all, the false claim leads to defamation of character, stigma, and perhaps slander to the accused. All it will take is a neighbor who is anti-gun make a claim because they saw you carry a gun case into your house. You have gun therefore you are a threat to their views.
  23. It will violate the 2nd and 4th amendments. And by searching and seizing without a warrant, it will violate your civil rights. The writers of unconstitutional laws should be removed from office and banned from future pubic office as a violator of their constituents civil rights. But I doubt we could get that passed.
  24. Welcome aboard. Can't tell you much about Taconic 909, but you can also hunt over at Stewart State Forest. It is about a 20 minute ride from the Newburgh-Beacon bridge. Stewart has deer, turkey, rabbits, squirrels, and stocked pheasants. It is a shotgun only area. Being a multi-use area, you have to be especially mindful of your target and what's behind it during this part of the season - hikers, mountain-bikers, and horse-back riders. Almost stepped in fresh "road-apples" on Sunday. Saw them loading up the horse trailer at sunset from their ride. Once it is Deer gun season, it is limited to hunters-only, although there a still a few people who think they are the exception.
