I've got sour grapes about what?? I am not a DEC officer, but I wouldn't want to be walking out of the woods with a bow in hand alongside a buddy with a gun, and be within sight of a DEC officer. You should try it one day and let us know how it turns out.

Pygmy should be along shortly to tell you about the G-string theory. And that won't be about the G-string on a violin either.

Again, I think this depends who the student is. If the student is from some working stiff family, he will NOT get the same treatment as a student from an upper crust family. This type of snobbery has been going on forever and it surely hasn't ended yet. It's still alive and well. Some students from modest backgrounds can make their way thru it, but most will not.

My take on name recognition schools has always been that if you come from an "upper crust" type background, they may pay off. If you attend Harvard, and are the son of a well-known doctor, you will get a great job from the get go, even if you were a lousy student. Of course that doctor could afford sending his kid to that high priced school. If you attended Harvard and are the son of no one in particular you probably won't get that great job even if your grades were top notch. So "name recognition" does have it merits even beyond college names. That is why I recommend that kids from lower to middle class backgrounds should stick with lower priced schools, even if they are very bright. How much can that high paying job really be worth if you have a HUGE debt to pay off for years to come? Better off settling for a lesser job, with little or NO debt in my opinion.
-
That is definitely true. In our country people think that money buys everything, so you'll always have people wanting to go to these high priced, well-known schools, and the costs will NEVER go down, only up. I guess it's a status symbol for many like driving a high priced vehicle. My freakin Toyota will get me from point A to point B, just the same as their Mercedes, but of course they will never be caught dead driving what I drive. LOL

The real problem is that colleges are way overpriced. No way in hell that college should cost as much as it does. Even the best schools shouldn't cost too much more than a public college. $40 or 50K or more per year for college? Come on. These days many students don't even have to attend class, nor do the professors need to be there, so why these huge costs?? Colleges seem to be a HUGE racket these days and they are getting away with it. But how do we fix this?? My advice to kids is NOT to go to these high priced schools. Some may get great jobs after graduating high priced schools, but everyone won't. If someone is smart and is a good worker, they can end up with great jobs from the lower priced colleges as well. Not worth paying huge amounts to these schools for their name recognition.

I guess that's the catch with this caliber. Not too many chamber for this round. I think Sako and Tikka do as far as non-custom rifles go. Ruger chamber this round in the Scout?? The Ruger Scout I would definitely NEVER consider. That's got to be the ugliest gun one could get. A flash suppressor on a hunting gun doesn't look right to me, plus I think scout gun designs make very little sense in general.

How much harder would it hit out of a 24" barrel compared to a 22"?? The animal would never know the difference. The slightly flatter trajectory you'd get from the few extra feet per second from a longer barrel won't make much of a difference either for what this cartridge was intended. The beauty of the .338 Federal is that you can have a hard hitting cartridge in a compact, easy to carry rifle. I think a 22" barrel would give one no disadvantages whatsoever.

Man, was I snookered. I always figured you yearned for the Alaskan BUSH to find moose and caribou. I'll know better from now on!!

I've known plenty of these all day sitters. Come seasons end I end up bagging more than they do. It works for me so I ain't changing it!
-
No kidding!! It really don't take much to keep rust off guns. The most minimal of care can keep guns rust free. The guy must have never cleaned or oiled that gun in his life. Having some scratches or loss of bluing on a well used gun is one thing, but that much rust is total neglect!

The people upstate don't necessarily drink that same water, however. Many people upstate have well water only, or from other sources than the upstate reservoirs that NYC gets it from.
-
No, not making this upstate vs. downstate, although I've had more bad tasting pizza upstate, than I have downstate. Just wanted to know how the pizza from that box up in Alaska was. If it sucked, one might as well start firing at the box without taking the pizza out. LOL
-
Oh no, never wished that. In fact, if I remember correctly you shoot your bow without sights, right? I am not much of a bowhunter myself, but I'd like to see how the boys on this forum would do without sights? So kudos to you on that!
-
Jeez Paula, you scared me for a second. I thought you were posting an obit about her or something.

The box is cool, but how was the pizza? The pizza I've had in upstate NY is pretty bad, I can imagine how it must taste in Alaska. LOL

Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
steve863 replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
That was my thinking. There may be exceptions for people boarding flights out of JFK, but in general I thought no one from another state was allowed to bring a pistol to NY. There may be other exceptions for people just passing thru the state. No one should forget that JFK is in NYC, and the rules are even more strict on pistols there. -
That's how sissies would do it. The only manly way on a bike, is how this fella does it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv-Q7DBA6jc

Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
steve863 replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
He did say he was bringing pistols with him. I would imagine this would open up a whole other can of worms, both at JFK airport and abroad? Don't know where he is heading to, but I don't think many places abroad look too kindly at people bringing in pistols. Maybe a few spots in Africa it would be OK, but Europe has very strict gun laws just about everywhere, most especially for pistols. -
I never do all day sits. If I missed seeing a few deer because I didn't sit all day, so be it. I think many people who do these all day sits become bug eyed, cold, bored and un-attentive by about 11AM, that they will probably miss seeing any deer that might sneak by anyway. Best thing to do is to take a break, have lunch, maybe a nap, and you'll be refreshed for the afternoon.

I have a decent amount of experience with bikes. I know I would produce LESS body sweat climbing a decent sized hill on foot, than I would on a bike. To climb a hill in a lower gear you are cranking at a good pace, yet not going very fast. You can pace yourself a whole lot better on foot to prevent yourself from sweating, most especially with hunting clothes on.
-
Oh man, I'd really like to see that in action. That's almost like sitting a 100+ lbs human who don't know how to ride on the seat while you try to balance him and push the bike at the same time. And maybe over uneven terrain. Don't sound too easy to me. Dragging can be a pain, but balancing a carcass on bike doesn't sound like a great alternative.
-
1 mile is not that far to walk. I like to go into the woods lugging around LESS, not MORE. If you put something down, you will have to drag it out, and then have to walk another mile back just to get the bike. Believe me, dragging a deer for a mile won't be fun, and it will be even less fun having to walk back to get the bike. Biking is fun, but you can do it ANY time of the year. In my opinion one doesn't need a bike to hunt. Things will be easier without it.
-
Yeah, but one can then say the same thing about small game season, which is at the same time as bow season. If I were bowhunting I would NOT want to be walking out of the woods with a buddy who was hunting rabbits and carrying a shotgun. I don't want to be explaining anything to a DEC officer who may have an inquiring mind.
-
I do think that if a DEC officer came upon a few hunters walking out of the woods together and who were all known to each other, that he'd have issues with it if some were carrying bows, while others carried a gun during a youth hunt. Now if any of them happened to be dragging out a deer, then he would no doubt have some real serious issues with matters. I don't think I'd want to be one of these people.
