  1. You might be able to look it up online, DEC's website. Seems my sons was there when I purchased his this year.
  2. Heal up quick! Hope you get well soon!
  3. How the h#ll do we get Cuomo ads on this webpage?
  4. On a positive note, when my son got his first Deer last year, I had posted the pic on Facebook and tagged him in it. Over the next several days, a lot of kids came up to him saying it was a cool deer, gun & that they also hunted. My son had no idea that many kids also participated in this great pastime.
  5. Off of DEC's website today: AccompanyingQ: Can I take my young child (or an unlicensed person) with me while I am deer hunting? A: Yes, and we highly recommend it! Just make sure the child (or unlicensed person) is not hunting or assisting in any aspect of the hunt (like driving deer). Bring an extra pair of binoculars and plenty of snacks. Have a good time!
  6. It is usually a woman that looks at me cross eyed about it or makes flippant remark. Best line I ever heard from a fellow hunter, "Why do I hunt and eat Venison? If Deer could eat you...they would!"
  7. My first was a girl (17 now) and I was stunned when she was born, surely thought a boy due to Old Wive's tales about blah blah blah. She helped my pluck duck feathers when I brought them homw but now is less impressed with the deer that come home. Doesn't matter, love her with all my heart. My son (15) got his 1st buck last year and he was with my when I got my first 8 point. Thrilled to have a hunting partner for the rest of my life. Both of them are the best thing that ever happened to me along with being with my wife. Good luck!
  8. I strictly gun hunt, got my biggest deer last year (in profile pic) and it was out of a tree stand. After completeing the Hunter Safety Instructor course, I probably will not hunt out of stands in the future. Too many variables that can be out of your control. I know stands can be hunted safely, just my personal preference. Going to try a blind this year and / or just stick to the old leaning against a tree blending in. Had a buck within 30 yds last year sitting on a stump and have had a doe within 20 ft snorting up a storm trying to get me to move. Amazing what just freezing and standing still will do if you are camouflaged correctly.
  9. Usually spend a weekend at camp. Occaisionally take a day off during the week with a buddy if conditions are right.
  10. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=92c_1407249904 I think I see a zipper in the back. Sincerely, looks creepy going through the trees.
  11. A lot of bear sightings along Little John Road in NE Oswego County. They've been trying to break into camps and have torn apart a couple of outhouses. Will be interesting to see if I run into one this year. Not sure I would shoot one, not a fan of the meat and the rugs are awful pricey to have done.
  12. http://marshmillranch.com/ is a great place, have been going there for the past 7 years. Great service, CLEAN shop and owners are very friendly. Vacuum pack available. Jerky is great & the cuts of meat have always been high quality. A little bit of a drive from Oneida but worth it.
  13. Started in 1996 when I was 28 (46 now), my brother got me into Duck / Goose hunting up on the St. Lawrence River. Around 2000 I started Deer hunting and it has been my #1 ever since. From time to time, some grouse - rabbit - turkey hunting as well. I just love being in the woods and am grateful my now 15 year old son is hooked as well. We both got deer last year (his first) and it is a memory I'll always have with me.
  14. I shot an 8 point at 75 yards last year (in my profile pic). He dressed out at 175 and the rack was really high. When I see a deer, I try to judge by size of the body. If he is big, I shoot. When I have the time, try to see how long the nose is. You can get a decent judgement if the snout is shorter or not. IMHO, it works for me. I had one person tell me my buck was 3.5 years old by the teeth and then my taxidermist said 2.5 years. Whatever! Got 4 grocery bags of meat out of him.
  15. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=650_1402905289 Enjoy!
  16. I've come across a few neat items over the years while hunting or hiking during the annual canoe trip. Nicest thing I found so far was a purple colored "coffin" bottle that used a cork, might have been for either liquor or medicine.
  17. I sat in on my son's Hunter Safety Course last Oct. and enjoyed the refresher. It also motivated me to become a Hunting Safety Instructor and I had my first class last Thurs. The Master Hunting Instructors (both Bow & Gun) stated that before 4/19 Crossbows were going to be considered "Bows" and that you needed the Bow Hunter Safety Course. After 4/19 they received notification that the Crossbows were to be considered in the same class as Muzzleloaders. They didn't elaborate much after that. Cabin Fever's post seems pretty up to speed on the subject.
  18. Enjoy the site, a lot of good info here!
  19. Sure would, we have a Lt. that belongs to our hunt club, great reference for when we have questions. Some of the members privately resented having him in the club, IMHO it is foolish to feel that way.

  21. I live right next to Green Lakes State Park, NY's epicenter for Deer Ticks & Lyme Disease. My son was out in Feb looking for sheds and picked up two while there was no snow on the ground. These critters are a pain in the butt. Several neighborhood residents & dogs have gotten infected over the last several years.
