  1. Since I am waiting till spring to make venison jerky, I stopped at the store tonight and had my butcher thinly slice some top roast london for me. Dig a quick marinade and hopefully tomorrow I will be slowly making some jerky Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Good thing I am only 30 minutes from VT. I must say I haven't bought a box of ammo in NY since July 2013, got a majority of my pistol/rifle ammo in VT and mostly all of my 22s from Cabelas offline over the summer/fall.
  3. Grow, I have stopped using my dehydrater completely, due to the fact that they have a hard time keeping the food in the safe temp areas. (After I got food poisoning from chicken wings, I started paying attention more to safety and processing of foods) Not saying it can't be done safely in a dehydrater, But I stick to 165 in the oven until it is perfect texture to me (Crispy) or I will bust out the smoker. I have heard of people marinating jerky in Wood chuck hard cider before but I have yet to try it. (But I have used woodchuck on a pork roast and loved it)
  4. Well to start my story, My hunting family (Dad, Uncles, Cousins & Close Family Friends) all thought I would be the one to not be interested in hunting because I never really showed interest in it as a kid. From 6th grade to 11th grade in High school I was playing basketball and didn't have the time for both hobbies until my mid teens. When I was 12 I started getting into wanting to hunt, took my hunter safety course and bow course, I told my dad if I am going to bow hunt I wanted to use a recurve. I ended up getting one for Christmas when I was 13 and used the bow to hunt for a couple seasons until I was mid draw while hunting and the string snapped, I said I would never bow hunt again. At 15 I started hunting on the weekends here and there never really had time because of basketball. Saw a couple deer here and there but I didn't take it serious until 16. I was out to Forestport, NY hunting at camp and I have always like this ridge so I went and sat on the back side and my dad went to the corner of a swamp about 500 yards away, I sat maybe 15 minutes when all of a sudden down walked a small forkhorn. Since it was buck only I took too long to confirm it was a buck and spooked it out of there. Slightly discouraged my Dad kept me going for the season and we decided we would go out for 3 hours before practice when southern zone opened up, again I went to this area I liked and he went to the top of a hill. Within 15 minutes 3 deer walked out and I had a doe tag, I saw this one deer cut to the left giving me a broadside shot at what I thought was 80 yards, I pulled up scoped what I thought was a decent doe, 6mm right through the heart at 137 yards the deer flopped over and I waited for about 20 minutes for my Dad to come down. We walked out and saw it was a small button buck, But to me, my first deer was the biggest in the county. Ever since then I have been buying guns of all calibers, I have given up on hunting southern zone (Maybe will hunt 2 weekends here or there) because I don't like seeing so many hunters. Senior year (2008) I quit the basketball team because I had an opinion that the coach and I didn't see eye to eye on and decided hunting and fishing were the sports I loved to do more. It took me three more years of hunting in Northern Zone before I ever had a chance to try and shoot another deer. Hunting and fishing soon took over my life to a point I made set schedules with colleges and my job at the time so I would always have time each week to participate in either one or the other. This worked out perfectly for my first two years at community college but when I went away to finish my degree I ran into time lost for each sport. My last year at the college I ended up living in a townhouse with a guy who was become one of my closest friends. We were both big into hunting and pushed each other to keep going farther in the sports. He even got me back into Traditional Archery which is something I truly enjoy shooting. About 2 weeks before spring break we planned to go on a traditional archery hog hunt in Florida, so we told our parents they laughed and said yea right. We packed the SUV and off we went, neither of us connected with a hog but we had the time of our lives trying to catch a fish in every state and even giving bow fishing a whirl in FL. This past season I have spent the most time ever in the woods scouting in the preseason and hunting my tail off (Ended up with a decent doe in Early Muzzleloader). This season really made me realize the love of the outdoors and the commitment I have decided to take. If it wasn't for my family that kept the door open for me to enter the outdoor world, I don't know if I would of ever joined back. So far I have taken 3 deer (2 does (Muzzleloader) and a button (Rifle)), And I was working an area where I knew there was a buck this season, but my dad decided he would end his cold spell of lets just say double digit years and stole my target from me! I must say the day he got that deer, It was more exciting then when I got first deer. Finally my Dad was able to hunt without worrying where his little boy(s) are wandering around the woods and it felt good knowing his gun still works ha
  5. Bubba that is quite the story, after someone kicked our door in and stole out generator from camp, I have always kept either my rifle or pistol loaded incase someone came in at night. We are 3.5 miles from the main road and from there 2 miles to a store. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. We were too confused to try and plan anything. I only saw that boat on the lake once and don't know what happened to it, I hope someone shot a cannon at it and sunk it. Ha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Meat Manager, I would put it in a shed or garage, something to break the wind and help keep the temps up. It can be a little tricky trying to smoke in the winter
  8. No Worries I can google that, Thanks.
  9. This is the calmest I have seen this thread in days, Good job Dudes!
  10. Same here I tried blowing it up and I gave up because I didn't eat enough vegetables as a kid
  11. Grow, If I take a guess I have a 50% chance of being right! It is hard to say IMO but when I first saw it before your comment I said oh I wonder if that is a buck that shed its antlers. I would guess that I think it is a small buck that has shed, but I am sure someone will disagree.
  12. This story takes place on Kayuta Lake in Forestport, NY. It was around 2008-2009 after I was fresh out of high school and decided to take a trip out to camp and fish some local lakes and streams. So my buddy and I strapped the canoe on top of the explorer and head out to camp. When we made it to the boat launch parking was a little tight because a guy was sitting in his 1980's ford pickup truck. So I got out and asked if he can pull forward so we can unload the boat. He pulled forward without a problem and as we were getting ready to launch off, he jumped out of his trucking yelling wait wait! So we waited for him and he came over and said, Boys I am telling you to be careful there is pirates out on this lake and they are chasing people! My buddy and I said oh thanks for the heads up, we will keep our eyes open. As we paddle out to where we wanted to fish we determined that the hippie guy had to be on some sort of psychedelic drugs or something. We fished for about 30 minutes when all of a sudden I heard my buddy say OH **** and start paddling like crazy. I looked back and there was a wooden boat that had a pirates flag coming straight for us, so we decided to paddle under a bridge where it couldn't reach us because it was too tall. After laughing and pulling ourselves together we decided to fish the far end of the lake where the boat couldn't reach us. After asking around town there was a group that had a camp on the lake who turned a boat into a wooden pirate ship that liked to go around the lake and harass people. Long story short always trust the hippie people.
  13. Ny can you send me the boat you used for the party of 12? That is looking like the size of the party we are going to have. We were just gonna hire two boats and ask them to fish by each other ha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Awesome Mule deer, Thanks for sharing!
  15. True! But it was a good try, right?
  16. I have thought about going down towards Troy (about 40 minutes south from me) but I don't have a boat that I would take out on the Hudson and I haven't really heard much about where to shore fish for them? If you have any info on this I am all ears
  17. hahaha that was pretty funny.
  18. GB sounds perfect, I will pm you if I don't hear from you in a couple days.
  19. Ny Hunter, I went out on a boat called Marlintini, and they are an awesome group of people. Most likely I will be going back to these guys but I wanted to entertain the idea of who other people have used and compare prices and everything. NY Hunter if you or anyone that might go with you is active or retired military let me know and I can set you up with what we did last year and how it was pretty cheap for a group of 6. http://www.marlintini.com/index.html
  20. I went last summer at the end of May and had the time of my life. The only problem is we drove to CT and it seemed like it took forever. So I decided I would ask on here to try and support business through other members for the heck of it. But I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what you come up with. 21. Anyone on here do Charters for 6 people or so for stripers and summer fluke? I am looking to book a trip this coming summer and trying to see what is out there for options. If you want to PM me or send me a link to a website with a charter you have used before I am interested in all details. Thanks in advanced for any tips or help.
  22. I had between 4-6 different bears on my camera that were all .39 miles away from camp, a kid from a few camps down from me ended up shooting one that weighed 305 dressed. But good luck this summer with setting everything up and don't forget clover costs a pretty penny so do some soil tests to check the PH level and just take your time and ask questions if you are unsure.
