  1. Well I do alot of still hunting by myself, but we also have a small group of us that do alot of deer drives. The only time we have every had a problem doing a drive with some idiot shooting back into the drive was when it was a friends dads, co-worker. After that happened we said we are done with you guys, and started a tight group of buddies. We get alot of bucks during the season, and pretty much could fill every DMP if we wanted to. We love being out there seeing deer.We do pass up shooting alot of the deer. Also if someone in our group has not gotten a deer, or just some bad luck, we have no problem putting that person on watch to get a chance at a deer. There is nothing wrong with deer drives if they are planned out, and everyone knows where everyone else is.
  2. The only hospital near Watkins Glen is Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls up on the Hill. There is alot of land in that area that could hold a nice buck and the Catherine Swamp is just over down the hill from it.
  3. I know I have seen articles on Syracuse.com and there where atleast 3 shot this year during gun season.
  4. Wasn't Scott NY is where all those boar where shot this year that escaped from the hunt preserve their?
  5. If you every drove through Cayuga Heights you would not have a problem of seeing atleast 20-30 Does before you see a buck.I was driving through there on a side street one day and went around a corner and there was like 10 deer standing in the ditches eating.
  6. All I can tell you if you drive through Cayuga Heights area where this buck is, you can see upwards of 25-40 deer in a few minutes. I know they have tried to sterlize some of the deer up in that area. There is a huge fight going on in CH over the deer, some people want a hunt, others people want to trap and relocate them (please trap that big buck, I have a very nice farm to move him to lol) , and then some people have enough money they are willing to pay to have the deer fixed (a few years ago a older lady donated money to have like 50 deer sterlized. Also you guys hammer Doc, but he maybe on to something. These deer are located in area's that there is easy food sources all year long, and this maybe why some of these bucks are healthier during the winter, so maybe there antler growth comes on faster. I know they have less hunting pressure if any so the stress left could be lot less on these deer. Sure they can grow older to, but also have to have the food source and good genes too. Maybe all the stuff used to make the golf course pretty is helping this bucks rack grow to. Sorry there are alot of people, books, and everything eabout whitetail deer, but there are still more questions about deer unanswered then answered.
  7. Well my business is right in Ithaca, down near Kmart, Walmart area, and I have gone out my back door at night and there is a huge buck living in this little brush lot not bigger then 10 yards by 10 yards and this buck lays there all the time. At my old business location which was on rt 13 next to Mano's Diner, there was some old tractor trailer box's out back and we would see deer laying under them all the time.
  8. I work in Ithaca, and have been told alot about this Buck, they said he was a 17 point. We lives in Cayuga Heights on the Cornell Golf Course. I also heard a rumor that someone shot him but can not confirm this . Also was told that a local B & C Scorer looked at him and was thinking well into the 180's maybe 190's class deer. Also believe it or not, if you can pass the background check and signup early enough there are parts of Cornell that you can hunt. Not sure how close to the golf course you can hunt.I know a few people that hunt Cornell. He has hunted the last few years on property near the city limits on 13A near the Cemetery, they will give you doe tags. You also have to sign up in advance on what area's you want to hunt and the days. So its not like you can just wake up and say I am going to hunt here today. I attached a picture of another nice buck in Ithaca, this one was near the Cemetery up by Judd Falls Tops during bow seasons. My friend was up there and took this with his cel phone.Sorry about the crapped picture, he needs a better cel phone. This buck was chasing a doe, and did not even care my friend was there.
  9. Well he was sitting in a stand and 3 small deer came out, then a very nice doe appeared, he was going to shot the doe, when it got behind some rose bushes so no shot, then he seen some movement and that is when this guy appeared. So maybe was chasing
  10. I need some better pictures as this picture does not show it true size. One of the G2 is 11 inches
  11. I friend on mine shot this deer yesterday with his muzzleloader. This is a really nice heavy rack 8 point, it tipped the scale at 180 lb range.
  12. That is a awesome deer. Well who needs AR in NY with all the huge bucks taken this year. I am thinking the early snow helped take down alot of these big boys this year.
  13. The land owners would be the Dmap permits. The land owners get alot of this to give out. So someone could shoot at least 6 deer on one property during hunting seasons if their DMP permits where for that area, counting their bow, and regular buck tag.
  14. Land Owner Permits are different the DMP. To get the land owners permits you have to have the DEC come out and look at the damage down, same with the NP. I believe if you get NP, then the land owner permits for regular deer season are sent to you automatic.
  15. Errussell, my dad used to be the largest grape grower in New York State in the 70's and president of the NYS Grape Growers Association, until the grape market collapsed in the late 70-80's.My dad used to grow over 1500 acres of grapes at one time, and had a customer grape picking business. We are on Seneca Lake, we don't have a Winery, but still grow grapes for the farmers markets in NYC. Most of the Winery's now really only grow a few acres of grapes for looks, as most of them just buy their juice from the larger winery's. Alot of the winery's are just a hobby for people, looks good when a lawyers tells everyone he owns a winery. There are some that are still family owned. If you look alot are all owned by a few people, and they own several.
  16. Well how about a little view from a land owner and farmers (and no we do not get NP).I can show you lots of deer damage in our vineyards. So you want me to let every Tom, Dick and Harry on my property? Why should I have to just more goverment control. Do these hunters pay my School and Property taxes and insurance ? I agree that there are too many NP given out. I think if NP are to be given out, that if the farmer does not want the deer, that the deer should be donated and not just left to rot in a field. Also the DEC also gives out Land Owners DMP permits (which can only be used on that land during regular deer season). I seen a farmer with only 100 acres get over 10 of these regular permits. His land is mostly pasture and hay fields. The DEC does give of these permits like candy on Halloween.
  17. Erussell, you need to remember that most of the land that can be hunted is owned by farmers. I not a fan of these permits, but there is nothing that will every be done about them. They are getting worse and worse. Also I have seen Christmas Tree farmers get tags for Bucks as thy can prove that bucks where rubbing on the tress and ruined them
  18. Real trees smell nice, but I can't beat the Grinch type fake tree we have now. You open the box put the base down, had the bottom sections opens like umbrella but upside dow, add the top field that falls down opens the same way. And bam tree is up, and does not cut into my hunting time. Plus these fake tree's are looking better then a real tree, on thing I hate about a real tree, you buy one looks just right until you get it inside and it warms up and over takes 2-3 times the space when you first put it up.
  19. Well, I know if I had some extra money, I would be putting in some very nice food plots.
  20. I am in the Fingerlakes area, so I see all these NO FRACK signs on my way to work everyday. Most of them are near Ithaca, and in peoples yards that do not own much land or rent there house. You do not see alot of these sign's in yards of people that own large amounts of land. Also about the run off . I live in Wine Country , and see how much spray is put on some of these grapes. I have seen the same vineyard sprayed 1-2 times per week from late May all the way to Harvest time in Sept/Oct . How much of that spray ends up in the run off? I am guessing there is alot of it, when you take all the vineyards in account. Most of the vineyards are also located with in a few miles of the lake. How much Copper Sulfite and other sprays end up in Seneca Lake ? I rather see a gas well in a field then all that land broken down into building lots and sold off and then have house's built. I think some people just are jealous of land owners and farmers who just might get ahead in this world. Most farmers are lucky enought just to scrape by to keep the family farm. I am talking a family farm and not those Corporation Farms.
  21. Here is a good forum on this region for gas info. http://gomarcellusshale.com. It Has alot of info on PA ,as they are booming with gas wells. Also fracking has been going on since the 1950's is NYS. Check this link http://www.dec.ny.gov/energy/46288.html . It just they are not using huge amounts of water only 100,000 gallons, instead of millions need for the Marcells well.
  22. That movie gasland is pretty much one sided. And yes the $1,000,000 can be a real offer. Al you need is 200 aces and a sign up bonus of $5000 a acre. If you look in Tex and that way, they gas companies are happy to pay $5000 here, as down there is run $20,000 to $30,000 a acre. I passed on the gas company a few years ago as their $100 acre offer was a joke. Sorry $18,000 offer not interested.I have really been reading up on this, as it will be a huge thing either for the good or bad to me. You will be talking alot on money at some point and time. They will drill just when. This wind fall for farmers has been great as it has helped them keep their land. Remember folks the more farm land that gets sold off to be developed the less hunting land there will be.
  23. Well they have been drilling and fracking in Northern Seneca County for 30-40 years. There are wells all over the place up there.Just drive on some of those back roads and looks at builds, tractors, and everything else these farmers have from getting gas. There is one person that says that there well was affected by the drilling. I wonder how many people every had there wells tested every year before the drilling every begin. Probley never. There is always 2 sides to every story, and then the real story. We as a nation need to get off the depending on other countries for our Energy. We have enough Natural Gas in NY alone for 10-20 years alteast. Why not convert our cars over to natural gas, or make them run on both gas and natural gas. Natural gas burns alot cleaner.
