I've killed a lot of birds over the stick your hand in the foam ones to give them shape , insert stake Never scared off any birds I'm aware of. Daughter bought me a DSD hen for Christmas. Called in 3 birds that strutted all around that one today. Ones now in the freezer. They all work IMO

Shock gobbled birds at 9:15. 3 longbirds came running at first 3 note yelp. They hung up at 80 yards and boogied. Hung out for awhile and a couple of purrs brought them back. Shot a nice 2 year old. Other two kicked the crud out of him while he was down Two more guys and we could have tripled.

Heard two gobbles at 6:30 here in 9h. Shut down and nothing since. Getting mighty windy now Brother in Akron same thing Buddy killed one early in Bennington.

Wow. so glad i wasn't about to read an article of a turkey with the golden bb shot at this distance

Camo umbrella (best $15 ever spent) strapped over my head . Inside woods line about 25 yards over looking field.

1000 acres. Run and gun it
-
How many acres are you hunting? I hunt 70 acres. I don't run and gun myself . Figure they can hear me from anywhere on this property. I've pretty well patterned them and know they'll hit the field I'm set up over eventually . I've gotten up to move to take a little walk and got busted both times. Dang birds were right behind me and never made a peep. I now sit til noon if I have to. The 2 year old bird I killed last year came in silent. Strutted all around my decoys. Just because they're not talking doesn't mean they're not there IMO. If you haven't tried popping up that blind yet I would make time today to do so. No need to be fussing around with it in the morning and dark.

Lynch's 101 Foolproof boxcall I got as a gift 35 years ago. As I call real soft I only use it when it's windy or raining hard. HS Strut slate I've had for a number of years and last year I got a very nice custom slate from a guy on Old Gobbler forum

What are you shooting this turkey season?
turkeyfeathers replied to BKhunter's topic in Turkey Hunting
Remmy 1187 SPT 12 gauge, Rhino .660 tube, Bushnell circle T optics and Heavi blends If taking my 11 year old daughter we'll take her Youth Remmy 870 20 gauge pink laminate (I'm manly enough to shoot it) ,Bushnell AR 1X MP red/green illuminated T dot, Jellyhead tube and Heavi blends, She'll be old enough to hunt next year but I'd like to get a bird under it for her with her there. It's a slick little set up and a heck of a lot lighter than mine ,lol -
Curious to any favorite ways you guys/gals cook up your bird. Mine is breast brined for a few hours, little bit of Bearman dry rub, wrapped in bacon and smoked over some apple chips. Let's hear your go to recipes. Thanks in advance

OMG that bird got close. Awesome. Should have knifed him. IMO though, that's some dangerous stuff. So guys if you're going to try this MAKE SURE you're alone in the woods.
-
keep in mind a turkey's like walking uphill more than downhill for your set up
-
explain? IMO I don't think a bird is going to remember last year. Many instances a hunter will miss/get spotted/or make a call the bird doesn't like. Either by sitting it out or moving they can kill that same bird later in the day. I've accidentally sat directly under him on his roost. (they moved roosting area) He knew I was there. Flew down a few hours later than he should have . I waited awhile( few hours) ,called and got him to respond. Granted I didn't take him home that day but was thrilled I got him fired up.

My daughters first Youth Seasons Turkey
turkeyfeathers replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in Turkey Hunting
Congrats to the both of you !! Can't wait til my 11 year old daughter can hunt with me. Taking course in October. -
Perhaps he henned up . Did you overcall him? Call him to loudly? Maybe try some soft purrs at him if it happens again. Typically once I get a bird inside 100-150 yards I may only purr at him once or twice. I'll call off to my side so he can't pinpoint me and still keep looking for me. You got to experience a good morning in the woods and hunt him again. Hunting the same bird to me makes it all the more enjoyable. Becomes a personal vendetta.
-
Sure sounds like you're walking thru them. Can't wait til a little later in turkey season to pick a bunch. Made leek and potato soup last year. Delicious
-
Did you perhaps overcall them? Decoys aren't completely necessary . A lot of guys don't use them and or refuse to use them. Sometimes calling like a nasty hen will bring in the boss hen and the tom will follow. Stay and wait them out if they hang up or won't come in right away. Don't over call and call quietly. They know where you (hen) are. If the hens go to nest later mid morning the tom may come looking for you. Killed a lot of birds between 10-12 o'clock Hope some of this helps.

Ugh That sucks. I've run into the village idiot myself once or twice. Guy ran between me and my decoys to cut off the bird. That bird was coming hard too, Until he set up on posted property (that I hunt with permission) and starting wailing on his box call. I said screw this and threw the orange ribbon from my vest and made as much noise as I could to find out what his deal was. " I was just seeing who was out here, this is posted he says" My response was 'Ya, and i'm the only one to have permission to hunt it!" His next question was are you going to be out here tomorrow. Yup, and the next day and the next day I said. Ignorant people suck !!!

Great day to share in the woods. Congrats !

Just was thinking about this and laughed. Years ago a very good friend came back into town and haven't seen him in a long time. So of course we went out and partied it up a little too much. Had to as it's been awhile since we hoisted a cocktail together. Low and behold my alarm goes off what seemed an hour later (probably was) Running a little late I'm hoofing thru the woods as I'm about 15 minutes behind when I'd like to be. "pow, pow" a bird gobbles on roost so I quick sit down exactly where I'm at as it's getting light. Right in a huge patch of wild leeks. After about ten minutes I thought I was going to throw up right then and there. Heard bird fly down, hen up and never got a glimpse of him, lol. On a plus note, can't wait to pick some leeks for potato leek soup again this year.

As little as you think you know about turkey hunting you're on the right track in your thoughts. I simply don't shoot jakes as they don't typically give you "the show" I'm looking for. Adult birds will give you more meat. You're shooting next years tom. They maybe a little dumber to the call too. Not opposed to anyone shooting them, everyones trophy is different. Do you bowhunt? If you have a passion for that it's pretty safe to say you'd get easily hooked on spring bird hunting. 5 more sleeps until I hit my happy place

Great video. Great strut on that bird
