I personally give him a verbal "putt" so he sticks his head up to eliminate crunchies in the breasts. TV shows always show them whacking them in full strut. Am I missing something ? Everyone have some great dentist friends? I try and hit him with the bottom of the pattern . 2 pellets in the breast meat in last many of birds. Just curious to what you guys do.

Very valid point. My Winny 1300 with cheaper turkey loads killed them equally as dead before this set up. I guess it's more about having some of the best equipment than anything, lol. Taking my daughter's (currently 11 and not old enough to hunt) youth 20 gauge with jellyhead tube a few times when she can go with me. I'll shoot it and put a bird under its belt with her tagging along.

IMO a 60 yard shot is silly. Why take the chance at the golden bb and or wounding a bird? People don't miss entirely at that range, you wound a bird. If he isn't inside 30 yards you didn't fool him. My 1187 SPT, rhino .660 tube and heavi blends (tested a lot of tubes and ammo) is indeed a 60 yard gun but I'll never shoot them that far. He hangs up, he beat me that day. Multiple hunts on the same bird Winny XR's are getting some great reviews on OLd Gobbler forum Let the bashing of my post begin. Never shot at a running deer either. This is the way I was taught to hunt and teaching my daughter the same ethics

To me it is. I'd rather let jakes walk and have a "show" from an adult bird next year. I kill 1 or 2 birds every spring. I'm not opposed to others shooting them. Everyones trophy is different.

I do and will continue letting jakes walk. Fooling a jake doesn't take a whole bunch of skill. Won't shoot bearded hens either. Why eat a 12 -14 pound bird when theres a 20 pounder. Heard bearded hens make good at raising their young ones. IMO I'd rather shoot a nice strutter or nothing at all. It's all about the show and display.

Saw it last night. It was ok but draggggggged on. Wife was expecting it to be great with all the nominations. She said 6 out of 10 on it. Wait for DVD IMO

strange and scariest things while hunting or fishing NY
turkeyfeathers replied to noodle one's topic in General Chit Chat
In 8th grade a friend and i netted a bunch of suckers and threw them into a mason jar for trapping bait. This was Spring time and we put the jar atop of the school near his house to ripen. Came fall we climbed back atop the school to retrieve our "bait". He picked up the jar, we peered in. A few wormlike creatures about 3-4" were slithering around the now grey matter. We both panicked, he dropped the jar, it broke sending the most disgusting smell you have ever smelled at us. I think I can still smell it and may drive heave at the thought. Still to this day want to know what the heck those things moving were -
strange and scariest things while hunting or fishing NY

Buddy was attacked in his treestand last year by a screech owl. Opening day of deer season. I got the text from him and literally laughed out loud in my stand. Dang thing hit him in the head 3x. Watched another friend wading below Scoby hill dam . No felt liners. He was trying to walk and starting to slide sideways, deeper and deeper until he hit the channel. Poof he was under freezing cold water. Good thing his boots cinched tight and a great swimmer. Scariest thing to happen to me was snowshoeing in 0 degree weather across a beaver swamp and hit where they had run and ice worn thin under the snow. Up to my chest I went. Not easy crawling out with shoes on. Miles from car. Thank goodness for smartwool socks and gators. -

Nice. That girlfriend is a keeper with a gift like that. I'm still keeping the wife around with gifts of Winchester muzzleloader, Winchester 1300, snow camo and DSD upright hen decoy over the years. Yup, she's a keeper too . A small part of me thinks she buys me these things to get me out of the house more : )

Years ago my brother and his friend went up into the hills of the ADK's to spring turkey hunt. Well as you know turkey vests have many a pockets. Every day my brother would add a rock or two to his friends vest. After a week his friend says "dang, I'm not cut out for this, I'm dragging a$$ walking these hills"

Any mag higher than 10 capacity should have "disappeared" by now. 10 rounders are ok but only can stuff 7 in the mag and 1 in the tube. Unless at a certified shooting range

Dad who is now a spry 89 and blessed to have him around . He's told me about pumpkin balls and paper shells that used to swell up in the side by side when grouse hunting. "find a nice long straight strong stick to push back out" he'd say. Also when living in PA shot a nice buck with his 30-40 krag. It was atop the hill , rolled down and he had to drag it back up the steep hill. One season he went 21/42 shots on grouse. I know the few in my life scare the crud out of me and most likely couldn't even get off a shot. He hunted with a 410 and 20 gauge too.

incredible pics!!! I want to see one someday. On side note: Are Posted signs without name and addy legally posted? I've heard not

Had same shooter buck at 70 yards 2x, same trail and only had neck shot. Clear and unobstructed shot both times. Never even clicked the safety off the slug gun. Not for me

Love the progression. Thanks for sharing

Long Island is the worst for hunting
turkeyfeathers replied to outdoorjay's topic in General Hunting
How is Darien state park for hunting? I drive by it all the time and see a ton of cars on Broadway,Sumner rd and the 77 entrance. Just doesn't look like fun with that many people -
Partrigdge Run Grouse Hunt
turkeyfeathers replied to Rookie's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
My only tip is don't let the partridge scare the crud out of you when they flush. Always does me, lol. If you're hitting half of what you shoot at on them you're having a great day. Wish we had more like in the old days. Good luck and enjoy -
color me stupid again
-
Well color me stupid. Learned the other day that the extra web strap that came with the vest is more than a drag. It's designed that if you fall out that you use it to support some weight away from restricting circulation getting cut off from your legs in your hang. You create loop and stand in it.

Reason being? Cleaner shooting, accuracy, FPS , easier to dial in load gun really likes?

I shoot a Winchester Apex Magnum 1/28 twist ( I believe) and currently shooting Thompson contender xtp mag express sabots(hollow point/240 grain) with 150 grains of 777. Have shot deer with 100 grains(not sure why I upped to 150) and they were equally as dead with thru and thru and great blood trails in the snow with both . 6 deer with this gun and never had one go more than 40 yards with double lung or heart shot. I didn't notice any huge accuracy difference with either the 100 or 150 . Never tried any other ammo with it. Just curious on opinions of what your findings are. Thanks in advance. Going to test other combos this summer. Going to give up the slug gun and make this my primary gun. Oh yeah, opinions on powder vs pellet ?
