  1. Venison tenderloin and yellow onion in butter. Delicious.
  2. Oops,I meant to put this in the harvest thread. I guess I am getting old.
  3. I did not see the biggest buck until after I shot this one and it was out of range.
  4. Yesterday morning around 9 on state land, the light rain had stopped when 2 bucks walked in from my left side. I had plenty of branches to screen me as I stood and drew waiting for the second buck to cross a clear area out in front of me.He was approximately 25 yds when I released the arrow.I thought it was a good lung shot. The bucks ran about 40 yards in to some brush.I watched this one twitching his tail and not acting like a lung shot deer. Then I watched him bed down.I stayed in my climber and waited. The other buck walked around a bit and 5 minutes later this one stood up and was very wobbly on his feet.He walked behind some trees where I could not see him and I heard branches snapping.A few minutes later I saw one of the bucks wander off but I couldn't see far through the green woods to know if one or two bucks had walked away.I knew I had better wait because the last thing I wanted to do was push the deer if he was laying 50 yards away wounded. So I sat for another hour.Meanwhile a bigger buck walked through right near where I last saw this one but I would not have had a shot at him even if I had not shot this one. Finally I decided to quietly climb down and look for the arrow if it was where the deer was when I shot and go back to the car for a while.I climbed down and found a very blood covered arrow behind where the deer had crossed the clear opening. The blood had no bubbles but the arrow was painted with it pretty much from point to nock. Because there was so much blood on the arrow I decided to look where I last saw the buck and found him dead . The shot was too far back but I got lucky there were perfect 3 blade broadhead slices through the liver.
  5. So I finally have my backtag and other tags. I emailed my local DEC office yesterday explaining what happened and today I received a nice email back apologizing and giving me some information for the licensing agent. I printed the email and returned to the store with it. Not sure that they agreed with it but I got my tags without any additional cost.Basically the agent didn't know how to give the tags without them having to pay the state. They have to call the revenue office to avoid the charge I guess.
  6. So still no tags and back tag in the mail yet. I went to Dick's Sporting Goods today to get my "free" tags and the clerk and manager couldn't do any printing without charging me $15 for replacements. I said no way am I paying they are free. The manager said he had no way of completing the transaction without charging me. Now I will have to drive 30 minutes one way to the DEC region office. New York State of incompetence.
  7. Best wishes Eddie. My father had 2 stays at RGH recently so I know how frustrating a stay in the hospital can be. Hope to be reading Fast Eddie's Fables from a stand or blind soon !
  8. Have not received my lifetime hunting/fishing tags as of today. I just read on the NY DEC website that if the mailing (tags) does not arrive by Sept. 1 : then between Sept.1 and November 1 tags can be issued free of charge at any issuing agent. After Nov. 1 the standard replacement fee applies. I hope mine show up soon but if not I will get them at an agent. I did log on to the Decals site a few weeks ago to confirm I had new tags and applied for DMPs which I received already in the mail.
  9. Glad you all enjoyed the pics and Wooly your pictures are awesome as ever !
  10. Thanks Wooly. I have it easy getting that nursing pic, I took it from inside my house. Through the window that is why it is a bit hazy.
  11. I woke up Sunday (yesterday) to find that this old neighborhood doe had jumped the fence in my back yard and given birth. She was with her "son", a buck born last year but soon chased him off. These two went from wobbly legged walking yesterday to running today. They lay in the ivy and wisteria and you wouldn't know they were there. Mom comes and goes to nurse them but doesn't stick around so that predators are not attracted. I will have to leave a gate open eventually so these guys can get out of my yard but for now they are pretty safe.
  12. Turn- Washington's spies was interesting if you like The Revolutionary War.
  13. I am guessing the bear hunting will be clearly stated on the permits next season. They should add coyote as well in my opinion.
  14. I found out Bear was open in Letchworth this year from a park employee when I was registering for a cabin in early November. When I told the 2 others with me about it neither knew bear was open in Letchworth. I thought it was interesting to see this bear story today. I hunt in the general area where this bear was taken so it was surprising to me to see that a large bear was living there. I knew bears were there just never knew how big.If the guy took it during the late season with muzzle loader or bow well then congratulations to him.
  15. I should try a bow only area next weekend but I do like my Wolf muzzle loader so I will probably take that to a spot I passed on some doe a few weeks ago.If all goes well and of course weather forecast.
  16. Letchworth doe opening morning 9ish. 35 yds as I sat on the very convenient tree seat (love my tree seat). 1 shot and off she ran. Checked for sign of a hit and what the ..... no hair no blood no blood trail. Must have hit a branch and somehow missed I thought. Sat back down. Got back up and checked again. How could I miss ? Better look down hill just in case. 100 yds. or less hey that looks like a deer on it's side. Had cell phone issue but that is another story, finally sent buddy a text and he showed up and helped cart her up hill on the oh so fun muddy trail for about 500 yds. The rain held off, I filled an antlerless tag and am splitting the venison with another hunter friend who hasn't had any good luck this season. Wish I had a better picture but we were trying to get back to the car in case it started raining.A good day for me.( don't know how to rotate picture).
  17. Marlin Slugmaster 12GA. because Letchworth State Park does not allow high power rifles.
  18. Saturday 10/21 on State land about 8:15. 2 bucks came in by me from opposite directions. I thought I might see a sparring match but neither one seemed to care about the other. The other buck was a little bigger body with a higher rack but no shot. I shot high on this one ,he dropped right there so I quickly put an arrow in to the lungs. Small 5 pt. rack but I like venison and have been working extra hours this year so I am happy to fill my tag. Hopefully I didn't offend the fall foliage tour bus people that drove by when we were about to load him in the truck.
  19. I have been a participant in the sighting log for about 20 years now. I am glad to send my information in if it helps the D.E.C.
  20. Eddie , if I make it 75 yrs. I hope I am in a picture just like yours. Congratulations and happy Thanksgiving.
  21. IN 8M I heard an average amount of shooting the first hour or so opening morning some close to where my nephew and I were sitting in Letchworth State Park. The shooting was very little as the morning went on and temperatures rose.I met a friend and sat for a few hours in the afternoon until the rain sent us home. So my experience was very few shots after mid morning and no deer spotted by 3 hunters although we hunted about half the hours we normally would have due mostly to the weather. I also did not see many vehicles in the afternoon for opening day and I saw no deer that other hunters had taken although I know some were.My opinion is that this coming holiday weekend could be better than usual where I will be hunting .We shall see.Stay safe everyone.
  22. November 4 at 4:30 this guy came walking out of some brush to my left. I had been in my climber on State Land for 4 hrs. he was the only deer I saw that day. I stood and drew just as the buck was about to enter the only opening I had a shot through aproximately 25 yds. away. I watched the arrow drop a bit just before hitting the buck He ran about 50 yds.away from me and then turned right and slowed down. After that I couldn't see him. I waited a short time and then climbed down the tree. I found the arrow with the broadhead broken off but a decent blood trail. When I got to where the buck had turned and slowed I could see him about 25 yds. away dead. A large blood trail the last 30 yds. After being skunked last year I am very happy to say the least and the tenderloins were better than I ever remembered.
  23. That is amazing. I never would have believed deer swam across the bay like that.I thought they only crossed when the water was frozen. Webster where life is worth LEAVING ??
