Who wore it better ?
philoshop replied to Water Rat's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Excellent!!! -
I'm still awake and diligently working at the computer for about 3 more hours. Last minute rush job. Not much chance that I'll see the sunrise tomorrow today. Best of luck to everyone who gets out there, though. You can't kill 'em from yer bed, right? Actually , if I open the window and use a gun and I can kill them from my bed. I'm going to stop now and get back to work.

Best of luck to everyone going out tomorrow!! I may take the camera and sit just inside my woods for a few minutes to watch the sun rise. I really enjoy that. Or I may just stay in bed.
-
Glad to have you with us.

Just spend time learning the woods, my friend. The critters spend 24/7 there and they know it better than you ever will, but your brain is bigger and more adaptive. That makes it a fairer fight in the end, but you have to do your homewoodswork.

Field Binoculars....?
philoshop replied to J sin's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I've had a pair of Leupold 8 x 23 binocs for many years. Very light and compact and they will easily sit on my left arm with the strap on my neck so they're out of the way during a bow draw. Or go inside the jacket if it's raining or snowing. Not the greatest for light gathering, obviously, and if I was hunting big country I would choose something entirely different. But for glassing every blade of grass while still hunting thick stuff they're quick, clear and lightweight. That's how most of my hunting was done anyway, and I spent more time with those binos to my eyes than without. One quick suggestion: look through them before you purchase. The store where I bought those Leupolds had 6 pair of that model. I looked through them all and they were all slightly different in clarity, and I picked the best one to go home with me. -

It's really difficult to understand what you type, but I think I have the gist of it. Garland's nomination occurred during the end of Obama's Presidency. It would have negated the will of the people who were about to vote in a new President who had promised to change the makeup of the SCOTUS. Are you following? It's an unwritten rule that outgoing Presidents can't f*** with the incoming President and the will of the people. Obama did both, but that's a book I'm working on. Just as an aside, If President Trump had nominated Merrick Garland the outcome would be the same. Venom, vitriol and hatred. -

Understand right up front that the Dems have zero interest in justice, or in this supposed victim, Dr Ford. Their only interest is in preventing President Trump from achieving anything. As long as you keep that foremost in your mind, everything they do actually makes sense. They go about it stupidly in many cases, but as long as obstruction and resistance are their only goals even stupid can work sometimes. And their supporters drink that kool-aide and ask for more. I write political commentary and of course I read a lot of leftist commentary. When I read and study the leftist stuff I have to make a conscious effort to change my thinking in order to understand what they mean, where they're coming from, and where they're going. It's incredibly difficult but necessary. BTW I buy Ibuprofin by the case. -
I've spent more time looking closely at that carving and and the finishing techniques. Just studying the photos. I'm extremely impressed. I'm a pretty artistic and talented guy, but to be able to pull that out of a firewood log just blows me away, Wooly. And I'm not just blowin' smoke up your skirt with this. You've come very far in a very short space of time with your carving. Congrats.

I'd like to expand on your signature line Papist, If I may: "In a blind world the seeing man is not king, he's considered a babbling idiot."

It will never end. Hillary called us "deplorable and irredeemable". That wasn't an aberration. That was a statement, made intentionally to set the tone for all further discussion. Even lifelong friends have chosen to no longer associate with me. I'm already over it, though, because it's impossible for me to consider that we were ever actually "friends" in the first place if something as trivial as a political disagreement would end the association. Who would ever stand up and say, "After 45+ years of friendship, living and working together, suffering through mutual hardships and consoling one another during tough times, I can no longer be your friend because we disagree politically."? I have a couple of people who have said that to me, and that's really screwed up. Lindsey Graham's statement at the witch trial, er, Congressional hearing today was very good: -
"Don't know what it is about this one, but it was a fun carve to do! " It's those fancy chompers, Wooly. Even George Washington would appreciate them. Very nice!!

Don't ever forget that these people destroy others just for fun. It's what they do, and they enjoy it. As a thinking human being I find that incredibly disturbing. I've experienced it on a very local and in low-level political situations.Where might this go? -

I have to disagree a bit here Pygmy. The man is watching his entire life and career being destroyed. I mean all of it. He can't even go back to his previous job on the DC Circuit court at this point. I can understand why he'd be somewhat emotional wondering whether he might be able to get his job back at Yale, or have to interview at Walmart. He's never really been exposed to the current venom, vitriol, and hatred that comes from the left. I certainly would have liked to see him stand up for himself more, ala Clarence Thomas, (high tech lynching), but the fact is he's unknowingly jumped into a championship level boxing ring and he's never even boxed before. And the people who want to beat him down are serious professionals at ruining people's lives. They do it for sport. -
Thanks for that, Dinsdale. It's the most important piece of hunting advice I've ever received. And I got it from my Italian grandfather in broken English, "if you don't understand the woods, how do you expect to know how the animals in the woods live?" A very simple statement that speaks volumes.

Man bathroom project also PEX vs Copper thoughts?
philoshop replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
My house is PEX. I have probably a hundred pounds of brand new copper fittings in my shop that will be sold for pennies on the dollar if anyone is interested. My municipal water screws with copper big time. Not sure why, but it's heavily chlorinated. Any chemists can chime in here. As far as the pipe size, and I guess you know this, think of it as a trunk with branches. The branches don't need the trunk sized water hose. When you reach a point where 1/2" will work, change that branch to 1/2". It's cheaper and easier to work with. There is very little in a house that will require a 3/4" water line. Hot water tank is about the only thing that comes to mind. -
So did you all hear prince Andy’s newest excuse

If I wasn't close to my elderly parents and my nearby family I would have left the state years ago. It's family that keeps me here. Having a glimpse of Seneca lake whenever I want doesn't hurt. I live in shack near the woods on two acres of land and pay about $1500 a year in property taxes. My best friend from high school owns a 40 acre horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky and pays about $800 a year in property taxes. -
I've never heard of either of them. Why do you ask?

I used to do crossword puzzles on long sits. Fill in a word then look up and look around. It worked as far as timing and pace goes. If you get too absorbed in the read, there will be a nice buck looking at you with his eyes crossed when you finally look up.

Project Veritas on IRS scandal
philoshop replied to philoshop's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I'll admit that I've forsaken the number one rule that "All politics is local", but Ive been focused for the last couple of years on the national and international scene without paying much attention to the local stuff. I certainly did go out and vote in the very local elections because the Town Clerk is my neighbor and the Town Highway Superintendent is a friend and drinking buddy at the Legion, etc. I know they won't screw things up. I don't think either Scummer or or Gillyfish is actually up for reelection this year, but your national congresspeople are. Again, I haven't paid a lot of attention to who's challenging whom around the state, but a vote for a Democrat is probably not a vote for our country. I'm sorry I don't know more. If anyone here has a decent rundown or perspective of the NYS national congressional races, I'd be very happy to see that. -
Project Veritas on IRS scandal
philoshop replied to philoshop's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
At the heart of this is the leftist idea that a big and all-powerful government is the best way to go. It's completely wrong, but it's what they desire. The IRS wouldn't have that kind of power if the federal government hadn't been allowed to grow unchecked. The last administration actually encouraged that kind of growth and expansion of power. The Obama EPA decided that they could tell me what's best for my drainage ditch, which is dry most of year, and how should "maintain" the rain puddles in my driveway. Remember:"Tyranny requires cowardice, and cowardice desires tyranny" Please, please, please get out and vote this November. And take 10 friends with you. We can't let the leftists win at all. -
I don't think of the SC justices in terms of GOP or Dem because their politics is supposed to be irrelevant. The only meaningful evaluation is whether the particular Justice is upholding the Constitution when they make their decisions. I'd be completely happy with an entire SCOTUS appointed by Democrats if they upheld the rule of law and the Constitution. Unfortunately the Dems over the last 50 years have been using the SCOTUS to try to make and enact laws that the citizens would otherwise reject. And that's not how this country is supposed to operate.

Ms ford won't even show up, let alone give testimony. Her handlers would never, and could never, allow it. This has never been about "hearing her story". It's been about delaying the vote to keep Kavanaugh off the SC. She'll be "under the bus" in a less than a week. I write political commentary and I've spent the better part of the last 18 hours writing about this nonsense. The best analysis I've had today after a half dozen articles is this: "Dr Ford's testimony was never actually offered to anyone. It was conjured by a group of leftist activists seeking the destruction of Judge Kavanaugh." Think about the term "conjured". The summoning of evil spirits. That's what I wrote in that piece, and it's exactly what I meant. You'll probably see it again somewhere. I'm not suggesting that Dr Ford is an evil spirit, but she certainly has sympathies with the evil spirits who have surrounded her. They have no qualms about destroying a good man in the cause of resuming power. That's very frightening.

Project Veritas on IRS scandal
philoshop replied to philoshop's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
It scares the hell outta me, to be quite honest. And it doesn't stop with the IRS. What if someone at the local DMV doesn't like your political affiliation and refuses to give you a driver's license? What is your recourse if everyone at the DMV feels the same way. Or the local police station starts separating jurisdictional priorities by political affiliation. Or the Post office decides what mail they will deliver based on who you voted for in the last election?
