  1. Mark Dice is mostly about humor and the absurdity of current reality. This is good.
  2. It was also considered unlikely that coyotes would ever be in Central Park in Manhattan, Pygmy. Just sayin'. I don't buy into the conspiracy stuff on any level, but I don't close the door on the possibility that a few big cats might find a comfortable home in central or western NY some day.
  3. I had traditional Independence Day fare: hots and burgers with all the basic sides. I'll be regular again before Labor Day. ;-]
  4. I always reserve opinion until the facts come out. 40 years ago we didn't have bears, bobcats, coyotes, or even turkeys in my area. I've watched the slow influx over the decades, and they are all here now regardless of what people said back then. In the mid 1970's I was surrounded before dawn one morning by a pack of 'dogs' while running a trapline before school in Wayne county. House pets don't act like that, and they don't all have similar coloring like those 'dogs' did. I reported it to local law enforcement who told me they would look into the 'stray dog' problem. Homeowners now have a coyote problem in their own back yards in that area. I don't know what, if anything, might have been done to prevent it, but public awareness wouldn't have hurt. The point is: it's absolutely possible that a few big cats will find their way into suburban and exurban parts of NYS because of food availability. Fluffy-the-poodle left alone in someone's back yard or, God forbid, a small child left for a moment, are easy pickings for a 200# cat. Will the authorities even tell us if this happens?
  5. I saw a manatee in Lake Michigan a couple years ago. Turned out to be Michael Moore taking a swim.
  6. The entire country will be celebrating tomorrow! Happy Birthday Paula!
  7. Very common, especially among those with a Liberal mindset: "I don't do that, so you shouldn't either." And of course there's this idea that: "I'm better than you because I don't do that."
  8. I haven't bothered to watch a Super Bowl halftime show since Tom Petty played. Someone refresh my memory, but it has to be over a dozen years ago now. It was a real show, and the band was great. Pygmy, you can't honestly tell me you don't know of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. If you're listening to the Eagles and Bob Segar you're in pretty much the same time zone my friend. It was 9 years ago, 2008:
  9. Christopher has no ball and socket joint left in his hip. And no cartilage at all remaining in that joint. His hip was 40 pieces of bone fragments. I appreciate the ongoing prayers, wolc123.
  10. It's essentially an intervention, Larry. There are experts who can and will coach the family members on how it needs to be done. I don't imagine it's ever much fun. That fire of independence is what made this country great, though, and the older folks tend to have a real good handle on just how fragile that independence is, whether they're physically able to drive or not. I think that's what you're FIL means.
  11. Here's an update: He was moved from the ICU to a regular room last night, so that's a very good sign. On the other hand, he sustained multiple fractures in both legs, a smashed hip, a shattered pelvis, and a broken tailbone. The docs repaired the hip rather than replacing it immediately, but cautioned that the replacement may need to be done within the next couple of years. They think he could possibly be able to stand and move around a little bit by the end of the year, but it's going to take years of PT before he'll be able to actually get around on his own. He's 28 YO. The driver who hit him is 93 YO and was making a left turn on a multi-lane highway and apparently hit the accelerator instead of the brake. God bless the older folks who cherish their freedom and mobility, but at some point it's time to hang up the car keys. ETA: Thanks again to all you folks for the prayers and well-wishes.
  12. Pretty good rundown of what would be required at that range as far as equipment and knowledge. If you're interested in 'long range' shooting - for us mere mortals that's basically anything over 400 yards on a woodchuck - and if you're into ballistics, this is pretty cool. I think he said the holdover with a regular scope base and rings would be about 400 feet with the target way out of your line of sight? And a 700 gr Hornady A-Max? Ouch!! ETA: Checked again. Holdover with basic gear would be about 800 feet. That's 267 yards of holdover!
  13. I don't even know the details of how it happened mlammerhirt. His fault or the car driver's? I can't speculate. I raced motorcycles semi-professionally for several years, and even on a race course with competent drivers you have to always pay attention. Same thing with karts, boats, bicycles, or any other vehicle that's tried to kill me over the years. Situational awareness, and a constant escape plan. Be safe everyone.
  14. I'm hoping my brother will call tonight with some information. I'm not the type to bother people unnecessarily in a stressful situation like this, even though I certainly do care. We're a close family, and I'll hear details when they have time to take a breath.
  15. Thank you everyone for all the well-wishes. I'll pass them along. Lots of broken bones but it sounds like he's out of the woods with regard to deadly internal injuries. I'll send updates as I get them. Thanks again, Mark
  16. My brother's step son Christopher was in a motorcycle accident today. Almost six hours in surgery, and he's not doing well. He was not only hit but he got tangled up underneath the car and was dragged about 200 yards down the road. He's a good kid and a good carpenter. He could use a few prayers tonight.
  17. I helped my brother plant a bunch of trees when he moved into his house. Fruit trees, pines, nut trees... he thought it was a waste of time. It's been almost thirty years now, and he loves the chestnuts he can salvage from the squirrels. He's planted a few dozen more over the years. Trees are good.
  18. I don't travel much any more, but there was a time when 2 dozen turtles a year or so would be about average. I also try not to run over snakes with my mower when I see them. I've raced cars, bikes and karts for most of my life. Hitting the intentionally bumpy pavement on the inside or outside of tight turns is called "being in the turtles". I never liked that expression.
  19. When you don't accept it, you can stop it. Trump knows it, the Poles know it, the Hungarians know it, the Brits are starting to know it...
  20. His last dying breath was probably, "Can I get a do-over?". Sorry buddy, this 'aint a video game.
  21. Good, short read and an excellent video. The Polish patriots have a lot in common with the American patriots. Rejection of both Islamic doctrine and collectivism (under any name). https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2017/06/29/eu-political-elites-worried-president-trump-may-form-alliance-with-poland/#more-135066
  22. High quality rant for sure! It's BS, but it's high quality. It's a State's rights issue. NYS has chosen not to be part of an energy independent nation. That's not surprising at all. Our elected officials are handsomely paid to keep us confused about these issues.
  23. Rescuing turtles is a good thing. Rescuing small children is also a good thing. It's in my nature to help those who need help.
