  1. Poor nesting because of cold, wet weather. This year should produce a great hatch but we need a couple years in a row of weather like this.
  2. In recent years..... Gun Season opener moved to Saturday Rifles have been allowed in the majority of the Southern Tier You can shoot does with your bow You can sign doe permits over to other people I would also like to add that the fact you can harvest two bucks per year - by itself - is going to limit doe harvest. A lot of the reason NYS has this problem (at least in the areas it exists) is because they push bucks by allowing you to harvest two of them. Here is what I would do (because it has already been dome before in the mid-west). Bow Season runs from September 19 - January 31st You can harvest one buck per year Have an early antlerless only muzzleloader season Allow crossbows Gun Season is one week That way people are not so distracted by antlers. Honestly, I don't even care anymore. I am in a position where I can hunt out of state..... so I do!
  3. Yeah. And I don't know for sure but I think you may be in 8N. I am in 8N on the eastern side of it and there is no way around these parts there are very many deer. I have seen far less than in the past couple of years and I can already see this spring that they really got a blistering last gun season with all that snow on that ground. I have trail cameras out already and have very few pics of deer - mostly singles - and I have not had any problems with them in turkey season. In fact I have only seen deer one morning. I put in clover plots on my land last fall and then frost seeded this spring. Beautiful clover fields. But they seem to be missing one thing - deer. Even after dark.
  4. I second this. I believe the best time to harvest a mature buck in the Southern Zone of New York is right when the season opens.
  5. Greetings Does anyone know where I can buy adult pheasants this fall? I am in Ontario County but I am fully aware that I may have to drive many miles to get them. I was just thinking about releasing a few (this fall) on my land for some hunting. I know they have little chance of surviving. Just for hunting a few days, I plan on contacting Pheasants Forever but if anyone knows a good resource let me know. Thanks. LEG
  6. Greetings Does anyone on here have the name of someone (reliable and experienced) to do some bulldozing work for me in the Springwater area of New York? I am looking to have some berms built but I may need to put a culvert across a crick first. It may be something that would have to be done in stages but I have no idea what it would cost for most the stuff I am looking to have done. If you do give me a shout. Thanks, LEG
  7. See if the seller will hold the mortgage. You can play with the term more and maybe get a better interest rate.
  8. Great buck. Way to go! I am with the 120 crowd. But who cares - nice buck!
  9. Here is how I see it Legs proportionate to body size Distinct separability of it's front shoulder, rib cage, hind quarter Well defined muscular features of the front shoulder and hind quarter A little belly sag Very large head I am going to say he is at least 4.5 years old. Good luck getting a shot at him!
  10. Yeah, I guess I was a little wrong on that. My apologies. From the NY DEC Website Question: Can I use a light at night to "spotlight"or look for deer from my car? Answer: It is legal in New York to use artificial light to spot deer as long as those firearms are locked in the trunk, completely secured in a case, or broken down. Compound bows, long bows and crossbows are broken down if unstrung. You may not operate an artificial light within 500' of a dwelling without consent of the owner/lessee.
  11. Oh and one more thing. Can you get your hands on a bulldozer? Make birms all along the field edges and then plant stuff (like holly or dogwood or tall grasses) on top of them. Drag some dead tops out there too if you can.
  12. Depending on your financial situation, measure out the width of the fields in road view. And then figure out how many Norway spruce you would need planted in 2 rows and spaced 12 feet (4 yards) apart. And then try to find someone with a spruce plantation that will sell you 5-6' trees for $30 a piece (or less). I know over her in the Western part of the state (Rochester to the West) there are several people that sell them in the spring for good deals. Of course, you will need a backhoe or you can use the front loader on your tractor (if you have one) to help dig. And then get a couple of those cameras that email pictures to you. Spendy but prolly cheaper in the long run then patrolling and dealing with the aggravation.
  13. You mean with a weapon the vehicle? Don't take it personal. I'm calling you a poacher or anything. I am just saying make sure that - even if it is only a bow - you cannot spotlight with one in the vehicle. If that is what you meant. Peace.
  14. That right there is 150" on bone (minus the stickers) I do declare. Hope you get a crack at him Cabin.
  15. Got a question burning a hole through my head. Do any of you guys ever disc your ground on mild days in December before the ground really freezes or in February/early March when it starts to thaw a little? My ground has been worked but not quite the way I want it to. Soon I will have a disc and I would really like to disc before I frost seed this spring. In other words, work it up during the winter months if/when I can. And then frost seed the newly disced ground when the time comes. Just curious.
  16. You did what a lot of other people don't do - you waited. And that's huge. In my experience, this deer will go somewhere between 50 - 200 yards and bed down. The second arrow may have been a blessing as he could bleed more from that wound. The gut shot may not bleed much. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. If it is a shoulder hit, you will get blood for a ways. I can't believe this deer did not bed down - it had to. Let us all know in the morning. Don't rush. Wait until it is good daylight.
  17. LMAO. Thanks Boys. But it would really be the work of this other Albany insider. But even if he pulls out - doesn't mean Astorino gets elected but I assume the Dems will run away from their own party or at least just stay home. If it is true - good. If Astorino gets elected - great! And if he can get the SAFE ACT repealed I look forward to hearing all your guns going off the next day - all day long! Good luck out there fellows!
  18. Don't Shoot the Messenger But there is some noise on Twitter from various sources that Cuomo may be pulling out of the race. @CuomoWatch reporting but nothing confirmed.
  19. Its hard to say what happened here but I would lean with other hunters who do not have permission who are trying to intimidate you out of the area. They may figure you don't have permission either so if they try and act like they know what they are doing you will leave. Does the landowner have the property posted? If not this is one of another reason to post your property that has nothing to do with hunting. One way or another - people will play games with unposted property be it real estate scams or hunting related. I have lived through both. If it were me - I would turn this in to an opportunity and write a letter to several of the parcel owners around where this happened. Explain what happened and this is happening. You may end up making new friends that trust you and let you hunt more land.
  20. It would not just take one per year. It would also take a much shorter firearm season - not only because its a gun - but because of all the people that fill tags for others. I believe very few peeps would poach out of season but they think nothing of filling someone else tag. It pisses me off and I have actually blown the whistle before. I am sure it happens in the better managed states as well but you only have one week to do it - NOT 40 DAYS!
