  1. The original person who wounded it would have had to tag it. No question. The law is that you have to tag it, And if he wanted to put it in Pope & Young he would have to tag it. If I found it would I have tagged it? I am not sure what I would do because, with something that large, it's hard to possess it and not tell someone about it. I would try and find who wounded it. It would be worthless to me and I would want the original hunter to have closure. If I could not find who it was then I would probably go the ECO route. Maybe he would let me keep it. I wouldn't want someone to find out I had it and then say I shot it and did not tag it. If it means that much to the guy who found it that he will not give it back then he should have to tag it like the law says. The original hunter would have to tag it as well if he is trying to retrieve it - any part of it - regardless of how long after.
  2. The best way to protect your land is to use it. Sometimes people don't understand things have changed until they've changed. Aside from posting your property and doing some shooting once in a while, you can do plenty of other things to help them along. These are the things that have worked for me. Have the first trespasser ticketed - no exceptions. Don't worry about what your neighbors will think. You can't afford to care. Do not get in to a confrontation with a trespasser but don't hesitate to tell them to get off your property. And yell. And pull out your phone and start taking pictures. If they do not walk away then that is when you walk away. Let the cops handle it. In late August, put up cheap ground blinds in sight of the border but not right on it either. You don't have to sit in them but make sure they can see them. They will never know if you are in it. Do you have friends who know these people? Make comments of general conversation (lie if you have to) about trail camera pictures you have, the number you have (of small deer of course), how much work you have put in to hiding them (but not how you hide them), etc... Maybe also throw in some comments about cameras that automatically text the pictures. This train of thought goes back to the simple debate whether or not a home security system is more effective that the signs you put up that say you have one Fall some trees. If you got a lot of white ash that you do not care about then find someone to cut it for timber. Less work on you and more activity on your property. Bulldoze in a road if one makes sense or partially makes sense. Make trails, hang clothes in trees for a couple days and then take them down, anything to make someone concerned that they will run in to you if they trespass. It might also be a good idea to reach out to a game warden now that things are winding down. Personalities vary but if you get a good one then he may come out, walk your property, and you can give him a sense of who is causing issues for you. This can help a lot. I was in the same boat as you. I bought land that was under absentee ownership for decades. People gonna see how much you will take. It usually takes 2-3 trips out from the game warden and the problem will cease. Good luck!

  4. Call Deer Search and see if they have someone in your area. Deer Search is the way to go. If it is bleeding that good then the dog will get you to your deer. http://deersearch.org/contact-us/
  5. That's an awesome buck. Congrats!
  6. Exactly. And I have as well simply because the odds are too great that a deer will go on a neighbors property.
  7. I think with the amount of trail cameras these days and the growing popularity of trail cameras the text the pictures immediately, you would be pretty stupid to go on someone else's land without permission. Whether the land owners hunt or not is irrelevant. Someone is probably hunting there. And as someone else pointed out, if you are hunting right on the border and they know you are hunting right on the border then circumstances change drastically. The first thing they are probably going to think is the deer was on their land anyway when you shot it. I am also in the camp of landowners that own property who have border huggers. Mine have been pinched before for trespassing. If I feel the individual shot the deer some distance from my border then I would never say No. For the border huggers that hunt on property far bigger than mine, the answer will always be No.
  8. What you are looking for is a boundary survey and unless you request one they will not do it. I had one done on my property and they did a great job. They actually used pins with the name of the survey company on them to mark the exact boundary AND they used flagging. I was impressed. But unless you ask them to do a boundary survey they will just mark the corners.
  9. I did not like the RAGE for the same reason you mentioned. I went to NAP Kill Zones and there is no looking back. They open harder than the Rage. Some claim too hard but I have not had a problem with them. Just keep that in mind when making your decision.
  10. Nice buck wooly. Real nice. I like the way you did the pics too. Congrats.
  11. Crab apple trees like Dolgo or Whitney that have large apples are the ones that QDMers seem to like the best. I planted DOLGO on my property the past couple of years ago. They fruited the second year (bent the trees right over) and they are very large crab apples (a little bigger than a golf ball and I think they will get bigger in time). Bright red. Whitney are big as well and I am going to plant some of them next year if I can find them. They are not hard to find but not easy either. I have seen the same thing as you - deer really do not seem to like the small crab apples on the property. Many ornamentals are not really fruit friendly to animals as I have read. Not even birds or turkeys seem to eat them. I have done a lot of research on it, most of which from the QDMA forums. Lots of info there. Anyway, DOLGO and WHITNEY are the names that come up the most because they produce big apples and quick. I am gonna keep planting them. One thing with DOLGO and WHITNEY - they drop them early. But there is a nursery in Potsdam that has a lot of crab apple that drop at different times (if you can find a popular one deer like). 12. If you are a Bill Winke fan (Midwest Whitetails) he said in his blog the other day that afternoons are better than mornings until the last week of October. Concentrate on food at night and don't expect the big boys to be out of their bedding areas in the morning until late October. It seems this year has been a little different with some good success early in the season.
  13. These guys on TV have not one, but two guys up the tree. None of them ever seem to talk about getting dressed at the car. Often times you see them lolly gagging around at camp before they go out.
  14. LMAO. We're gonna putb the scent less people out of business cuz common sense sunk in. Keep your clothes free of detergents and you as clean as you can, and (like always) hunt in the right wind.
  15. Yesh. And that's another thing. NY makes landowners work too hard and leaves everything plastered with posted signs. You get caught on private land in Ohio there is no excusec without that permission slip. None. They still have trsspassing problems but way easier to prosecute and the burden is on the hunter and not the LO.
  16. But he doesn't have to do it now. He can wait until later. And that's only if you believe the state. Areas vary and if you are not seeing many.....
  17. Drove by some state land in Ontario County this morning. One car. Drove by some different state land tonight. One car.
  18. You want to get a poachers attention? Try Ohio's strategy. From the link below, Scroll down to "Southeast Ohio - Wildlife District 4". First paragraph. http://www.ohiosportsman.com/threads/bad-boys-bad-boys-what-you-going.57963/ The guy in the violation above illegally harvested a 11 point buck that scored 192 inches. His fine? $14,694.23 known as the Ohio Trophy Restitution fine. In a nutshell, he paid $76.25 per inch. And by the way, that law got challenged in Ohio State counrt last month and the court upheld the law in the case of a hunter hwo harvested a giant on private property he did not have permissions to be on http://www.fallsnewspress.com/latest%20headlines/2015/09/17/ohio-supreme-court-rules-state-can-seek-restitution-for-illegally-hunted-trophy-deer And here is a guy in 2011 that had to pay 24k http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2011/03/ohio-man-to-pay-nearly-24000-for-poaching-trophy-deer.html The formula works like this: ((gross score – 100 (squared)) x $1.65) + $500 So if you illegally poached a 150" deer. It would be (150 - 100) for a total of 50. 50 x 50 = 2,500 And then (2,500 x 1.65) + $500. And your fine would be $7306.25 (plus whatever other court costs they lump on top). * Only applies to deer over 125 inches * Nice
  19. I think the bow market has become a parody of itself in many ways so they are probably good bows. But you really have to get out there and start picking as many as you can up until you put that one in your hands that screams, "I'm the one!".
  20. I hear ya. i have called a couple of times. I don;t regret it but it feels isolating. I would like to believe i have only helped myself out. But it does get frustrating when you have people around you that swear they are QDM to the hills and bitch about people shooting more than they should. And they they do the EXACT SAME THING! Shooting every buck you see and tagging it for someone else is as steeped in the tradition of NY Hunting as pews in a church. I do believe people are changing though but the more that stand up to it - the better. I support anyone who turns in violators.
  21. Worst part for many pf those hunters is whether or not they will see them again. I did not go because i don;t wanna stink up the joint. Every time you sit in a stand you lessen the chances especially if he already walked by it once.
