Who was your hero when it comes to hunting
apertureguy replied to DeerStalker22's topic in General Hunting
For me it was my brother. Not only was he a pro Bass man, but he was one heck of a hunter/trapper. He could jog through the deepest leaves and brush and somehow make no sound. Always scored huge deer and did so well that he would provide meat to several old veteran homes in his area. Was a member of the black rock fish & game club and several others as well. He was the best outdoorsman I ever knew and hunting without him and his great sense of humor is hard. -
I have a Remington Airmaster...it's pretty good. Have taken squirrel and woodchuck with it...but mostly I use it to keep the skunks from ripping my lawn apart feeding on the grubs.

Where are all the squirrels????

Here's the answer for Cranberry...get to the backside of the WMA and pull up some log and wait. Before long you won't know which one to shoot first. -
Up on Big Birch where all the corn is and everywhere else.

I'm usually good for a couple of these a year in the back yard digging under my shed too. Got what should be the last one very recently with the crossman air rifle.
-
If this guy still has this problem this year please let me know. I'm ready with my shotgun or scoped .22 magnum.

small game squirrel hunting
apertureguy replied to apoallo's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
While I have a very powerful .177, I use it to stay sharp in my backyard shooting range rather than hunting. For small game I take the 12 guage shotgun or .22 Mag after deer season. There are way too many coyote where I hunt to only have a single shot BB rifle and I would rather have the opportunity to take those too. -
Ninham...saw the first one up on the moutain walking on a rainy morning and then the other two come out of a hollowed tree a few hundred yards from the big parking area you come to on the right side of the road. All were very healthy it was just the season didn't start till the 25th...and this was on the 24th. Annoying, but pretty neat to see.

This year I didn't get my license, first time in 20 years. I started up on Cranberry mountain when we first moved here and have since been going to Ninham Mountain. The previous season was pretty good for me...did well on small game, scared a huge buck on opening day (dropped my chair while bringing the shotgun up) and saw 3 Bobcats just before their season started. Was good excersize and I was bringing home lunch pretty regular. Just got too wrapped up this year and didn't get to go. But will be back for 2012 season!

Squirrel hunting- 44 days!
apertureguy replied to Skillet's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Yep...always pack baggies and as of a few years ago...rubber gloves. This helps me get back to hunting sooner...don't have to worry about washing as much and no more bloody hands either. -

I have been so busy I never even got my sportsman yet...I'm sure I already missed out on the Doe permit. Maybe I'll just get a small game this year...as I doubt I will get the time to put in looking for Deer. I like to pop out the guts and skin later...just easier and gets me back to hunting sooner. Once home I pop off the feet, run a line down the back and gently pull off the skin, cutting where I need to so I don't lose any meat. Then I wash them up good...dip in a little egg, bread crumbs and either bake or fry for a nice quick snack. Otherwise...I boil and toss cut up bits into anything...tomato sauce, stew, soup...it's all good. -
Ninham WMU...once you get passed the crowd its OK.
-
who hunts state land?and what have you killed on SL?
apertureguy replied to arrow nocker's topic in Deer Hunting
I've always hunted a local WMU and have found it to be pretty successful for me. When I hunt small game I get a wide variety, when I hunt Big game, I choose by what I'm willing to drag out on my own...and have passed on deer that were too large for how far I had gone in that day. I like them. -
I keep seeing them as well...and several of them have been very small and with a wicked case of mange. I'm hoping to see some Bobcats this year and anything else with a good looking pelt.

Best way to bring in a coyote
apertureguy replied to steve863's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Hmmm...my E-Caller hangs from my neck. Which I understand might not be the best approach. But I can't work it remotely...yeah, I'm cheap and bought the less expensive one. Maybe I can record it and put the player somewhere nearby. Or just hit it and stay "very" aware of my surroundings. (either way it sounds like fun) -
Wow...that's a nasty I hope to stay clear from. I'll have to remember that one.

I had heard the same thing as a kid...something about waiting for the frost to kill the worms they might be carrying. However, I am pretty sure that might have all been hogwash. My brother was a great one for telling tall tales like this. I expect they will be fine...and I never heard of anyone eating brains though.

Remington Model 7600 30-06
apertureguy replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
My Dad had one of these...his brother bought it for him in the late 50's early 60's. We called it Boomer. The reason for this...even when side by side with another 30-06, this rifle was the loudest shooter on the block. Had a 5 shot clip, and was a great rifle to use as a kid growing up. Got my first deer with it. Sadly, I think it went to my older brother. After he passed away I think his skunk of a son-in-law sold it at auction for a fraction of what it was worth. -
Where are you hunting this year in 3N?
-
I don't care for the bibs...I like having my belt on to carry my knife. I recently went to walmart and got some decent heavy camo over clothes. This way, I can reduce the clothing I wear as weather permits and don't have to worry about a strap bothering me or not sitting right while I am trying to shoot quickly. At least this is what works for me.

I like the new look. The site works fine for me...and its even a bit easier to read.
