  1. Doc I do the exact same thing. I print the wife a map of where I will park and walk in, plus I have the fully charged phone. It gives her the peace of mind and allows me some comfort as well.
  2. That sure sounds like a small game hunter...which is what I've been doing. We're not all morons, we just don't hunt with a bow. Just the other day I came upon an old tree that was like some kind of Squirrel Meeting place. Darned tree had too many to count, running all over it. I was able to stand there and get 5 of them (my limit), but it took me 7 (reloading 1 at a time after the first 3) shots as those suckers went nuts when I started shooting...I did have to chase the last two...but only to the other side of the tree. I bet it sounded awfully odd to the other hunters who were in the area...but it worked well for me...was in the woods 10 minutes hunting and about 20 minutes pulling off skin & dumping guts. Will be making some sandwiches for later this week...enjoying some time off before holiday.
  3. Looking at the slo-mo, you can see the arrow bounce way the heck up and to the left after it hits behind the chuck. They "used to" try living under my shed too. I take them from a shrub I planted about 50 meters away from shed. I use it to sneak up on them from house as shed is in far back yard. Except I use the .22 Mag on them.
  4. Went to Ft. Benning as well...we had a guy (enlisted reserves) named Chasen Dix. It's perhaps the worst name mentioned here.
  5. I grew up enjoying a real tree, which we always got from the woods, with all that fresh pine scent. With that said I am just as happy pulling ours down from the attic every year instead of dealing with the sap and needles.
  6. We fire the BB rifle at them to keep them from ripping up the yard. Never actually had to shoot one though...the noise and or sight of the gun is usually enough for them to take to wing. I have yet to see one while hunting though.
  7. First time I fired a muzzleloader...which was built from a kit...I hugged a tree while firing for protection. ....Just in case.
  8. I'd take her hunting...she seemed to have excellent skills.
  9. The only reason the deer did that much damage was because it can't lift it's head high enough to see where the heck it's going...and just runs stuff over. On the other hand, I'm surprised some farmer didn't consider using him for plowing and fertilizing a field.
  10. I like to make sure the deer are really close when I fire...this way I miss less often and if I have to, I can also use my Mossberg as a club. Kidding...but serious about only taking close shots...It's not like I'm getting any younger and can suddenly see better, ya know?
  11. Yep, you have to wait until Deer season is closed before you can go afield for small game (coyotes) with a .22 or similar rifle. Although it can get pretty cold, it is a lot of fun.
  12. To answer the original question....No, there is nothing illegal about your partner carrying a flask with him to go hunting. It is illegal to hunt while intoxicated...but it is NOT illegal to carry a flask while hunting. You never even mentioned if he was taking a drink from it or not. Unfortunately, all you got was everyone's opinion...in their rush to be righteous. Kinda funny to watch.
  13. My hat is off to you sir. It's nice to hear news like this. Reminds me there are good & bad people everywhere...and it's their choices which define them as such. Have a great season! Regards, Bill
  14. Sounds great...mine is the silver Corolla. Look for the old guy (white hair).
  15. Yeah, I hear you on that too. When someone says I am something which I am not, I agree it is difficult to ignore them (especially when they make it so personal). What we have to do is realize they probably just didn't understand what you meant to convey. In cases like this I state my case, and within one or two posts I try to explain myself better. However, if they still don't get it I fall back to something John Wayne once said. "Life is hard, and it's even harder when you're stupid" And off I go to the next topic.
  16. No, but I might head there this weekend and during the week, for Turkey and other small game.
  17. Since I am a member of several forums, I know full well what you're talking about. However, as was already said...this is a public forum. Meaning all sorts of people are using & posting on it...and there is no guarantee they're going to follow any sort of etiquette rules or even if they know something about what they're posting about. As forum members we have to realize we have a choice...we can either respond to a BS post (troll rant) or not. There is no rule saying you have to reply to someone's silly reply to your post. It's a lot like when you're in the car on the highway. You pass a car with a kid in the backseat...and he sticks his tongue at you. You have to decide the best way to handle the situation...do you stick your tongue out at him, which might have the parents questioning your sanity...or do you continue on your journey? Me? I run the car off the road and beat everybody up...but that's why I'm on meds and have the ankle bracelet with Lo-Jack installed.
  18. I bet that would look great on the hood of my car.
  19. My first rifle was a lever action Marlin 30-30. Was a great rifle and always did the job. When I got older I used to borrow my Dad's Remington 30-06 (pump action) or my brothers .308 (bolt action) with a gorgeous scope (I forget the brand). Great hunting rifles for the available game.
  20. For me, the only time I seem to see Turkey is in the guy's front long on my way to work. Every day I see several there. So tempting too!
  21. I grew up in Orange County and can remember my brother doing very well trapping during the 60's & early 70's. He had about 20 traps and was always working on Muskrat and Raccoon pelts...as they were what was in the woods at the time. After coming back from 'Vietnam, he didn't trap any longer, but boy did he ever hunt. I think I'd like to try it myself. I've made a few snares to deal with Varmits in the yard...but wouldn't mind passing my retirement time doing this. Might be more fun than stalking around the public wmu's with my shotgun.
  22. LOL....so that explains why I saw the other ones walking up the road on way out. I think they're dropping them off in the parking area before the gate on the road to the fire tower.
  23. Yeah, I've been a member there for a couple of seasons. There some good info.
  24. Managed to take home a Pheasant on Saturday. Found him on the way out. I had stopped on the trail and he came walking down the hill toward me. Sure wish I didn't have the #4 loaded at the time, but there was still plenty left....from the top of the wings down anyway. It was a nice lunch with the Mrs.
  25. For me it was easy....one walked near where I was sitting. At first I thought it was someone's dog...then as it got closer I saw it wasn't. He was loaded with Mange so it didn't matter where I hit him...nothing worthy for a taxidermist.
