  1. Then I guess my passing on 100's of 6pts and 8pts is probably BS too, but I've only been passing on younger bucks since 1994... I hate to say you're wrong because I'm not anti AR.. but you're wrong... if you really knew anything about AR's you'd know that 3 on a side, although a good start in some areas... really isn't a good way to protect yearlings... in fact point restrictions is the least effective type of antler restriction. Steve B's approach would serve any area far better than the 3 on a side rule. Unfortunately, most hunters NEED some kind of antler restriction imposed in order to achieve what Steve does on his own. Before jumping on the AR wagon you should educate yourself on why antler restrictions are beneficial.. You seem to think it's to grow bigger bucks to kill... that my friend is the wrong reason to havee antler restrictions.
  2. Antler genetics might not allow him to get a much bigger rack.. he will gain some mass maybe.. usually by 3.5 they start to show their potential for antler growth and body size.... there are some late bloomers, but this buck isn't showing all the normal attributes of a 3.5 year old buck.. which leads me to believe it isn't the same buck.. but pictures can be deceiving so I wouldn't say for sure. If he's a 2 year old he shows great potential.. very healthy everywhere...he's a handsome specimen.
  3. Not sure about 200 lbs... he's got good size but not 200... even by season start... still not convinced it's the same deer.. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I'd bet not. Just not enough to tell me he's 3.5 regardless of antler size... if he is I'd be worried about food source in the area... even with poor genetics a buck that is 3.5 will usually sport some signs of a 3.5 year old. Still a handsome buck... he looks way too healthy to be having a nutrition problem so maybe he just is a late bloomer..lol
  4. Unfortunately some bucks will never grow an exceptional rack... He looks to have gotten a bit more mass... just not any extra tine length.. that's assuming that it is the same deer. It's entirely possible that it isn't the same buck, might be a younger buck of the same gene pool. Hard to tell without distinguishing characteristics. Still a decent buck.
  5. Remington 1oz. slugs... on sale usually before the season for less than $2.
  6. Bought this target 5 years ago and have shot hundreds of arrows into it... still looks as good as when I bought it.. It's the "Rhinehart Broadhead Buck" target.. I payed $110 at Gander Mountain... worth every penny.
  7. Somehow you always seem to beat me to the post... I'm starting to wonder if you can read my mind..lol
  8. Yeah I need another knife like a hole in the head, but I couldn't resist. Always wanted a locally handmade antler handle knife and couldn't be happier with this one.
  9. I've always shot 60#... never really thought it was too much.. I have a 45# that I mess with sometimes and wouldn't think twice about using it in the woods it shoots great groups as well... I guess it's aall in what you're comfortable with. Some fellas start to develop aches and pains from shooting the heavier draw weight... a good sign that you need to move to something lighter. I'm sure I'll be there someday.
  10. Never left the smooth bore... shooting the same shotgun for 40 years... don't fix what ain't broken.
  11. I think he could have made the same kind of money if he'd kept the buck... it's already gotten pretty famous as one of the top world class bucks... I'm sure he could make money with sponsorships and showings. But maybe the lump sum was just easier. who knows?
  12. I think he sold it for the money.. which was a pretty hefty sum I hear... the fella that bought it I think has been trying to cash in on the possible world record thing and has been taking it all over trying to get it re-scored... I have to wonder about a guy that sells a buck like that.. world record or not.. that buck is WORLD CLASS and probably once in a lifetime for him. And, for all intent and purposes, the contraversy is over.. at least as far as Boone & Crockett is concerned.
  13. That kind of experience is just as good... the more you see the better you get at it... even if you can't get the score on the money you can at least tell what class its in... I usually don't score the buck on the hoof... I am only concerned with it being mature with a decent amount of bone on it's head...
  14. You can check out his facebook page "Denn Handmade Knives" ... you can contact him there.. he is tremendous to work with... very good guy... he makes knives because he loves doing it.. not just for the money... even though the knives are worth every penny.. and the workmanship is exceptional. We are working on something for my website so you will be able to contact him there as well.
  15. Experience is really the best way to know about what a deer scores in the field... things like knowing that most 8-points won't reach 150 class in NY (unless they are exceptionally large) tell you that if you are looking for 150 or better... it will need to have at least 10 points usually.
  16. You can be sure that so called "green" products will be next on the list of mandated items. Energy efficient autos and homes.too.
  17. I was speaking more of private unions with my statement... public unions work more in the pockets of politicians to get what they want.
  18. I think there is an overall concensus that this would be the best method for getting total mass of antler... BUT... there is not yet a practical way to score animals this way... given the number of animals that are scored each year across the country and the world. the 1000's of measures would have to each have the same exact displacement "machine" to make sure all things are done fairly.. way to expensive for a volunteer organization.
  19. I think the knives are in the $150 range
  20. Not sure about the steel... I'll have to ask him.
  21. No.. I am one of those .. "if I own it, I use it " kind of guys... I'm sure it will dress a whitetail very soon..
  22. I hade this knife made for me by a guy in the ADK's... the blade was hand forged with hammer and anvil...polished and tooled... the antler is from an adirondack buck... the black spacer was made from a buffalo horn... the leather sheath was made from 100% unfinished cow hide and has scratches from were the cow got into some barbed wire... on the lether sheath there is a deer print stamped into the leather... the stamp was made out of a railroad spike taken from a 100+ year old railroad track near the makers home. The workmanship is incredible! The knife was made for me.. per my specs by Dan Denn of Denn Homemade Knives. It and all its parts are made from right here in New York... How cool is that???? I forgot to add that the knife is about 6 1/2'-7" long the blade is around 3"
