Lower the legal shooting distance for bow????

I am losing no freedom at all..lol... 5ft,1000ft, 5000 ft, 1 mile... makes no difference to me.. I don't hunt close to the rules... I hunt away from them... we are talking about an already existing law... which I think should never be needed... I'm not trying to add any new restrictions at all.. or change any restrictions... I'm not making any wave with those that don't share my love for hunting, or those that are completely against it... your cry for freedom at the cost of someones right to protection of their property.. speeks only for "YOUR" freedom not the FREEDOM of everyone... isn't that the freedom you're really talking about here.... you are mistaking freedom with privilege... hunting is a privilege, not a right... safety is a right.. and every person is entitle to it... therefore laws are created to protect those rights... whether you like them or not... in my eyes the only freedom I'm losing is when I can't use my own back yard for fear that my neighbor might accidently send an arrow sailing over my head.. not everyone is as safe with their weapons as you and me. -

You can always try to double Robin Hood the arrow that you split the first arrow with... that would be a topper for sure!

G... the law wouldn't have to change to allow management in suburban areas... special hunting permits and other controls for specific areas based on there needs would work just fine without changing the entire distance law state wide... I am fine with that kind of solution... I'm really not trying to pick on Liberty... but to change the law to accomodate his kind of situation I think is not a good idea... -

What should be obvious to both you and the DEC is that although there are thousands of hunters that would benefit.. there are 100's of thousands of hunters... and I'm sure more non- hunting neighbors that would not like to see it changed... I didn't say there shouldn't be a law, I said there should be no NEED for a law if all hunters were capable of keeping a safe buffer on their own... but since we all know that is not possible... someone must protect the rest of the citizens... I also said the law has no impact on me as a hunter... but it does protect me from my yahoo neighbor that wants to plunk his butt next to my kid's playhouse that I built in my woods... on the land that I paid for... if in fact that is what I want to do.. it's just that simple... your wanting to shoot a weapon does not, and should not, take presidence over my right to erect any structure or use my property any way I want without fear of being hit by a projectile... period. If your neighbor(s) gives you permission to do so then ok... but if not... sorry but thats how it goes sometimes... live with it. -
How goofy does someone have to be to even create a thread about how much they hate how Texans shoot... it's not everyday that something like that climbs into ones head and drives them so nuts that they have to rant about it on a NY hunting forum... at first I thought it was a joke, but apparently not..LOL

You have to admit.. if you know what you're watching.. the shows can be entertaining.. but passing them off as 100% real hunting.. yep.. that's stretching it quite a bit

LOL.. thats exactly what I get out of the last 20 posts... you don't have to agree.. which I already knew you wouldn't... I was trying to be nice, but what it really comes down to for you is that you want them to change the law strictly to help your personal situation... be honest.. that's really the only reason you care about lessoning the distance... It's always the same old crap here... guys making up feel good reasons why some law should be changed to justify their own personal agenda... personally I don't think there should be a distance law at all... hunters should be smart enough to keep a good buffer without a law, and if I want to build 400 BS sheds on my property to make sure nobody hunts within 500' of my property it would be my right to do so... it is not your neighbors fault that you don't own a big enough piece of land to keep that from happening. -

I guess this kind of comes down to your definition of "hunting"... mine is definitely not slithering around neighborhood homes shooting deer foraging on house plants... if I can see a house or hear the kids waiting for the school bus.. I'm way too close to civilization... I suppose for those of you the long to hunt on your cul-de-sac or set up a blind near the neighbors swingset... maybe there needs to be a law change... but in fairness I realize that is not what we're talking about here really.. I think we're talking about some of you that purchased a home on 5 acres, with a few acres of woods behind the house, with the intent of having a forever bowhunting spot directly behind the house... and you were always fine with the 500' rule until the day you realized that nothing is forever... now you want NYS to rethink a long time law to accomodate your inconvenience even though NYS did absolutely nothing to create your new hunting problem... -
I've been a life member for about 15 years.... don't expect much in the way of free stuff to field test... their magazine is good though.. and there are no hidden costs that I have seen... I expected much more from the club... but once they have your money you won't hear much from them...

Yeah what is fantasy fishing.. is it like fantasy football only with fish? Do you have to pick a pro fisherman and follow his season?

I shoot my bow in my back yard which is under the legal shooting distance.. at the moment i have the permission of both neighbors.. if that changes.. I will have to go elsewhere to practice... simple as that... and I'll do it... doesn't mean I have to like it.. but it really isn't that big a deal... I can shoot at the gun club or go stump shooting way behind the house in the woods... -
The term ignorant is very appropriate here sometimes... some are even ignorant as to what the term ignorant really means... i think some believe it means "stupid", but that's just plain ignorant!

I agree with you on over regulation, but this issue isn't just about hunters... it's about making people who don't hunt feel safe in their own home and on their own property... it's about being responsible and considerate to the non-hunting community... and it gives your neighbor (hunter or not) the ability to decide whether or not he wants you hunting closer than 500 ft from his personal property. A "good guy" just doesn't need to be hunting that close to someones home... It might be far more productive to get the definition of an occupied structure changed than to change the distance. -

With all due respect liberty.. you are basing your opinion on your own personal situation... and there are more hunters that LIVE in suburbia... but most hunt outside of suburbia... and suburbia is a very loose term... my neighborhood is considered the suburb and I have over 1000 acres of woods behind my home and another 1000 across the street... as for opposition.. I'm not opposed to lessoning the distance... I just really don't care... it will never be an issue for me, because I won't let it be.. there is no hunting law anywhere that I let interfere with my hunting experience... too many guys get caught up in what they can't do.. instead of what they can do... honestly.. a lot of the hunting laws are just created for those hunters that seem to need to hunt close to the rules instead of beyond them... if everyone just hunted at 1000 ft there would have been no reason to have a 500 ft law... it was created for the guy that thought it was ok to hunt 50 ft from his neighbors home. -

Sure I am all for doing what may be sensible in isolated areas.. I'm just not in favor off changing the overall law to accomodate individual situations... my guess is the reason they don't allow bow hunters to take care of these suburban problems... is because they would have an overflow of hunters that would start hunting there.. creating a whole new problem... -

You might have a lot of room if your neighbor doesn't keep moving or putting up a BS shed every time you move farther away.. but my point is that as things, people and places evolve you had better be prepared to adapt and not look to the law to change to accomodate you.. I purchased 6 acres (150x 1800 foot lot) 20 years ago and built my home there.... at the time I had no neighbors and no concerns about encroaching on anyone when it came to hunting my own property... yet I was smart enough to realize that nothing stays the same forever and I would someday have neighbors to deal with... I am fortunate that I have become friends with the neighbors and have permission to hunt anywhere I want.. but before my neighbors came along I realized that I would need other places to hunt in case things didn't work out so great around the house as far as hunting access was concerned especially knowing that I may not always have those same great neighbors... I never once thought to wait and see what happened first then complain that the distance laws were crazy and jeopardize my hunting season by not having a place to hunt... I now have many other places to hunt and rarely hunt near my home... I adapted and am not concerned about having a place to hunt... being proactive is always better than being reactive... especially when it comes to something that I am as passionate about as hunting... like i said... if all you have is a .22 and you want to deer hunt with a rifle... you'd better get another rifle.. not wait for them to change the law to allow deer hunting with a .22.. otherwise you might find yourself very disappointed come deer season. -

Your situation is unfortunate, but there are limitations in everything we do.. with only 220 ft to work with... even with a 150' rule theoretically you could still be in violation if both your neighbors decided to build sheds on either side of you.... it's kinda like wanting to deer hunt with rifle, but only having a .22... you either buy a bigger caliber rifle or you don't rifle hunt... you can't expect them to change the law to accomodate you. -
true...but I don't think it's possible to be pro-gun and pro 2nd Amendment... and take the liberal side of the gun argument all the time... and you don't have to be pro-Ted to know that his defense of the 2nd Amendment is spot on... although Santorum is not my guy... only a liberal would call him a wacko and still think Obama is the savior...

Had a friend that kept seeing this really handsome 10-pt coming to an apple tree in his backyard... he offered me the opportunity to hunt in a small patch of woods just off the back deck and near the apple tree... I respectfully declined... even though it was all legit.. it didn't seem right -
Turkey hunting is the easiest to film... turkey are quite a bit more predictable than deer.. I would say most turkey footage is genuine and doesn't need to be staged... I have filmed three good turkey kills in one day... that would never happen with good bucks in the wild... could go a whole season without getting a good deer kill on film...
